Efforts to develop a vision and strategy for the Newton Down-town area were initially targeted for a Dec. 1 completion date. However, should Newton be des-ignated a Main Street Community, a number of useful tools for the de-velopment of a vision and strategy would immediately become avail-able through the Iowa Economic Development Authority and Main Street Iowa.

Friedman noted the North Central Urban Renewal Area was expanded to include the New-ton Downtown area at the Oct. 7 council meeting. An ordinance will come before the council Nov. 4 to change the North Central TIF District boundaries to cover that area.

In his notes to the council pri-or to the meeting, Friedman said the expanded TIF district would allow for funding to be used on streetscaping of the Jasper County Courthouse square area.

Friedman noted the changes to the Urban Renewal Plans were meant to conform to changes in Iowa Code. Councilors and mayor Michael Hansen joked a couple times about “going to jail,” but the new provisions are no joking mat-ter to state officials.

City staff has worked diligently, City Administrator Bob Knabel said, to ensure the city is using money generated by Newton’s TIF districts for their stated purposes. The goal is to also make additional “targeted investments” mean to improve economic development in the city.

The Newton Downtown Self-Supported Municipal Improve-ment District Board has been meeting regularly to plan and make decisions about the $12,800 in col-lected SSMID taxes, as well as an additional $5,000 pledged by Re-new Newton.

A number of improvements to the Newton Downtown area have been identified:

• six new trashcans will be added to the district,

• seasonal city staff conducted periodic clean-up and sidewalk sweeping in the district, and

• the flower beds were watered and maintained.

Chambers noted the SSMID Board conducted a walking tour in July to assess the needs of the district. She said an online com-

munity survey is available at www.newtongov.org/downtownsurvey.

Asked by councilors about initial glitches with the survey website, Chambers said those have been fixed. She encouraged everyone in the community to participate.

Chambers also is a member of the Main Street Program appli-cation team, which meets at 7:30 a.m. every Thursday in the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Com-merce conference room. She said the Newton Historic Preservation Commission’s efforts to have the Newton Downtown area become part of the National Register of Historic Places have been helpful in the Main Street Program efforts, as well.

The district is expected to be listed on the National Register next year.

“There will be community ral-lies Nov. 7 at the Capitol II The-ater. One will be at noon, the other at 5:30 p.m.,” she said. “We hope as many of you as possible can come as we try to build support for the Main Street Program. It will be a great opportunity for the commu-nity to learn more about the pro-cess.”

Work continues on efforts to in-stall way-finding signs, not only in the Newton Downtown area, but throughout the entire community. Design work is nearly complete, and the city is working with the Iowa Department of Transporta-tion on way-finding signage rules along Iowa Highway 14 and First Avenue (U.S. Highway 6).

A group of volunteers through-out the community is working to develop a new branding and mar-keting strategy for the city. City staff has also been working with the Greater Des Moines Partner-ship through its Capital Cross-roads program, which Friedman said could also benefit Newton’s economic development efforts.

Public Works Director Keith Laube updated the council on the city’s $8,000 grant from the Cen-tral Iowa Regional Transportation Planning Alliance to study New-ton’s needs for park-and-ride ser-vice. He said the study will identify needs and possible locations, but could not say when — or if — a park-and-ride program would get underway.

Another key component of Goal C is to draw young families to Newton. A major partner in the city’s effort in this regard has been the Newton Community School District, which has also played a

role in the branding and marketing efforts underway.

The current Comprehensive Plan calls for more collaboration between the school district and local businesses and organiza-tions. The school district itself has reached out to the community, ask-ing for its help with its own Dis-trict Improvement Team efforts.

Meanwhile, the Newton Parks Board is working on a long-range plan for the city’s parks system to improve park facilities to meet the needs of those who are using them. The board is prioritizing projects to enhance existing parks.

Previously, the council approved moving forward with the Buxton Study, which will provide detailed information to assist existing busi-nesses, as well as to draw new retail businesses to Newton. And, the city is working to promote and be-come more involved in community events.

Chambers noted the painted snowplow blades that were a part of the Chamber’s annual Fourth of July Parade. She also pointed out the city had a booth at Thanks With Franks this year.

Improvements to the Maytag Bowl has also provided a “top-notch venue” for community events, like Bowlful of Blues. And, at the Oct. 7 meeting, Library Director Sue Padilla outlined the library’s efforts to engage new people in the com-munity.

Chambers also noted the Com-prehensive Plan Implementation Committee, an 18-member citi-zen advisory committee created in April, has created a budget with the $250,000 it was allocated. It has since broken up into smaller teams to address the following projects:

• way-finding signage;• clean-up of the First Avenue

West neighborhood, starting with the railroad bridge;

• efforts to install sculptures for the Rent-a-Sculpture efforts with a call to artists planned over the winter and installation in April or May;

• branding and marketing, which is nearing completion; and

• analysis of how the Keep Iowa Beautiful program and comple-ment the city’s community grant writer efforts.

Councilor Noreen Otto was quick to point out, following the presentation, how good it was to see the Action Plan go from just a plan to real action. Other members of the council echoed those senti-ments.

The Newton Daily News recently hit the streets and asked local citizens the following question:

What is your favorite scary movie?

Kim Porter

“It’s got to be ‘Halloween.’”

Bill Pester

“‘The Hitcher.’”

Marissa Wilson

“I don’t like scary movies.”

Deb West

“The Freddy (A Nightmare on Elm Street) movies.”

Talk of the Town

I hate waking up early, especially on the weekends. However, this Saturday I had a pretty good reason to crawl out of bed and it actually didn’t involve a bowl of cereal and car-toons.

I was going to hang out with some of my fa-vorite people in world, the “Red Shirts” and the veterans of Jasper County.

It is a well-known fact I love my vets! In the time that I have been here in Newton, the vets and I have truly embraced each other. I’ve drank, laughed and shared both triumph and tragedy with the vets of this commu-nity and I felt honored to receive an invite to the bus trip Saturday.

The plan was to meet at the Ameri-can Legion at 9 a.m. and from there, visit the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Van Meter, the Freedom Rock in Greenfield and finally lunch at Smokey D’s before heading back to town. This plan went off without a hitch; the only trouble was waking up on Saturday for me.

I had spent Friday evening freez-ing my butt off in a gherri curl wig, surrounded by French maids watching “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” for the first time and it was on an outdoor screen. It was fun, but weird (Thanks, Clistia, Marv and Eunie).

Anywho, let’s get back to the bus trip.

As most of us who rode the bus growing up know, all the cool kids sit in the back and this again rang true. My seat buddy, Korean War veteran Bob St. John, and I were in the thick of the Red Shirt shenanigans in the back and got first dibs on “Apple Pie,” snacks and as Doug Bishop phrased it, “adult refreshments.”

Apple pie — trust me, it wasn’t of

the dessert variety — and beer are al-ways great ways to get the party start-ed.

I loved the interactions that took place on the bus maybe more than seeing the sites. Bob told me about his time in the service his family and his dog. He also spoke about how he was thinking about mixing whiskey with an energy drink (I hope I’m that cool in my 80s).

The mother and daughter duo of Linda and Mellissa (they’re like a pret-tier and funnier version of The Judds) provided their usual sense of humor and I got to meet a really inspirational middle school student. Lindsay is only 13, but has been helping out with the Freedom Flights and other vet-related activities in the county for years.

Lindsay was the youngest person on the bus by far, but she displayed a maturity beyond her years. I asked her what got a person so young interested in wanting to help the vets and she credited her parents.

Great job, Amy and Kevin. Be very proud of her.

In addition to running into the usual cast of characters I see at the Legion, I ran into Lynn Harnden, who was the first-ever veteran I wrote about way back in January. He chal-lenged me to see if I remembered him (I did, of course) and for me that was kind of like a full-circle moment.

The transformation from being a rookie veterans affairs writer to being known as the guy for veterans cover-age in Jasper County is a great feeling.

Aside from our adventures on the bus, the sites themselves were defi-nitely worth the trip.

The Iowa Veterans Cemetery is still in its infancy, but looks great. It is maintained to federal standards. I also found out we only have two known Jasper County vets there, which I’m taking as a sign to do a follow-up.

I really enjoyed the Freedom Rock. Bubba Sorenson II, the artist, has done a great a job of creating moments on

this rock. I know how much artistic talent we have in Jasper County and I can’t wait to see what ours will look like.

I’m also casting my vote for Som-mer Kibbee right here and now to get first crack at the rock.

After the rock, we hit up Smokey D’s BBQ. While I did get full, I’ll put it this way — it wasn’t too high on the Kansas City scale. All the hard work that Hickory Park in Ames and New-ton’s own Smokin’ Mississippi Queen

did to grow my appreciation for Iowa barbecue almost seemed for not.

With our bellies full, we climbed back on our Hawkeye Stages motor-coach and prepared for the trek back to Newton. The whole trip was great, but I think one of my favorite mo-ments occurred as I was walking back to my seat and a World War II veteran put his hand up for a high five.

I gave him five back, went back to my seat with a smile on my face and had another beer with Bob.

Ladies Night Out costs $5 per person or $4 and one nonperish-able food item that will be donated to the Salva-tion Army food pantry. It will take place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

With more than 50 vendors this year, there will be something for ev-erybody. Whether you’re looking for a new pair of eye glasses, a purse, a gift idea or a future va-cation, you never know what you might find at Ladies Night Out.

This year’s Ladies Night Out will feature

the following vendors: Scentsy, Norwex, Mary Kay, Tupperware, The Dental Practice, Audrey Oliphant Photography, JH Travel, AdvoCare, Cato, Stacy’s Sweet Stuff, Tastefully Simple, Project Awake, It Works — Sadie Bartling, Tara Whitson — Artistry Consultant, Miche Bag, Pit Stop Liquors, The Bridal Sweet, Pure Ro-mance, Longaberger, Integrity Cleaning and Restoration, Nancy’s Canned Creations, JCARL, Skiff Medical Center, Pampered Chef, Koenen Chiropractic, Newton Eye Clinic, Fairwings Jewelry and Gems, Rainbow Pen-

dants, Avon, Be You Tiful, Young Living Oils and Shaklee.

“With the wide va-riety of vendors, it’s a good opportunity for people to meet differ-ent people and be in-troduced to products you might be familiar with but haven’t sought out and especially with the holidays coming up. There are a lot of gift ideas and party host-ing supplies here,” said Jeff Holschuh, Newton Daily News Advertising Director and event co-ordinator.

per month. Principal also will provide vision insurance at a cost of $1,115.40 per month.

The new prices and coverages start on Jan. 1 for county employees.

At the request of County Sanitar-ian Kevin Luetters and Judson Vos, the board approved waiving its right to appeal Vos’ upcoming hog confine-ment project to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Vos made the request so he would be allowed to start getting his new confinement con-structed before the weather turned.

“The county’s already approved and the DNR’s preliminarily approved the permit,” Luetters said. “We still have a 14-day window to change our mind. With the weather being the way it is, Judson Vos has asked me to ask you guys to waive the 14-day period, which we can.”

With the board’s approval, Vos can now began construction to expand his current hog confinement facility from being able to hold 2,400 head to 4,800 finished market hogs.

Pam Olson represented the Sec-

ondary Roads Department and pre-sented two measures to the board. The first measure involved the board grant-ing final approval to start the overlay project for county blacktop T38.

Olson said the project is expected to take several months and will begin in January. Olson’s department also re-ceived approval to vacate a portion of Main Street in Killduff. She said the road was never opened to the public and is on a citizen’s private property. The citizen made the request, and because the road was never open to the public, the public hearings weren’t necessary. In other business:

• Jasper County Director of Vet-eran’s Affairs Chris Chartier quarterly report was approved. His office allo-cated $20,662.76 during the last quar-ter and has $77,362.24 remaining for the 2013-2014 fiscal year.

• The board selected Nov. 5 as the final date to take bids on the county’s crop ground. Sealed bids must be turned into the auditor’s office before 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 5. Brock advised the board not to include pasture/timber-land in the bidding process due to low interest in the past.

The board will not meet again until Nov. 5.

The pursuit ended when Bass pulled into his driveway in the 200 block of East 14th Street North. In ad-dition to the eluding charge and the moving violations for failing to stop and driving on the wrong side, he is charged with driving without a valid driver’s

license and failure to provide proof of auto insurance.

Bass was taken to the Jasper County Jail, where he remained as of press time. He ap-peared before Jasper County District Court Judge Steven Holwer-da, who set a prelimi-nary hearing for 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30.

According to on-line court records, Bass was convicted

of driving without a valid driver’s license in April by a Jasper County court.

He also received a suspended jail sen-tence in late Septem-ber on a conviction for possession of marijua-na (second offense). According to online court records, he was to serve five days of a 180-day sentence, and also was sentenced to two years probation.

DEAR ABBY: I am a happily mar-ried, heterosexual cross-dressing male. My wife understands and is supportive, and we have a wonderful life together.

During the past week I have been caught unexpectedly by three different neighbors, and we are now in a state of panic. We’re not sure what to do. If you have any suggestions, we are all ears. — CAUGHT IN A PANIC

DEAR CAUGHT: Because you would prefer to keep your cross-dressing private and this is October, you could tell your neighbors your female attire is what you’ll be wearing to a costume party. It’s plausible.

However, when someone is “caught” engaging in a private activity once — that’s an accident. When it happens three times in one week, I can’t help but won-der whether on some level you would like to be more open about your lifestyle.

If you’re not aware, a resource, The Society for the Second Self (Tri-Ess In-ternational), offers support for heterosex-ual cross-dressers as well as their spouses, partners and families. It has been in my column before and is the oldest and larg-est support organization for cross-dress-ers and those who love them. It promotes cross-dressing with dignity and decency, and treats spouses on an equal basis with their cross-dressers. You can learn more about it at www.tri-ess.org.

DEAR ABBY: My best friend’s hus-band has been texting me. When he did it the first time, he had been drinking and my friend was asleep. Some of the things he said made me uncomfortable, but I also didn’t like that he said his wife didn’t know what he was doing. He stopped after I told him I was uncomfortable with it.

Now he has started up again, offering support because my mother passed away recently. I am honestly not sure whether he’s trying to be a good friend or if he’s looking for something more, and that scares me. I don’t want to start trouble between my friend and her husband, es-pecially because they seem so happy to-gether. Any ideas on how to handle this?

— UNSETTLED IN OHIODEAR UNSETTLED: Yes. Your

friend’s husband may be a genuinely sympathetic person — or he could be try-ing to take advantage of you while you’re emotionally vulnerable. Listen to your gut. Tell him you appreciate his thought-fulness, but you already have a support system in place and are receiving all of the emotional support you need.

DEAR ABBY: My 17-year-old cous-in died in 2010, and I’m still hurting. I have tried to get over it, but we were really close. When I walk the halls at school, I hear people say bad things about him. When I bring his name up, no one has anything good to say about him. It seems like they don’t really care that he was my cousin and I loved him.

How can I ask these people not to say bad things about him? — HURTING IN INDIANA

DEAR HURTING: Because people forget that the young man who died was your relative, feel free to remind them. All you need to say is: “You know, he was my cousin and we were close. I still miss him, and I wish you wouldn’t say things like that about him when I’m around.”

Losing a relative at any age is hard, but when the person is young, it can be even harder. Because you are still hurting and it has been three years, consider talk-ing about this with a school counselor or joining a grief support group. Your cler-gyperson can help you locate one.

Harper Family to perform at Bar None Cowboy Church

The Harper Family will be featured at the Bar None Cowboy Church this week.

From the hills of Missouri, the Harpers are a family group that shares their music and faith in a bluegrass style. Gaylon and Katrina met a bluegrass festi-val where they were performing, Gaylon with the Bressler Broth-ers and Katrina with her family, The Bob Lewis Family. In need of a banjo picker, the Lewises hired Gaylon. Within a year, Gaylon and Katrina were mar-ried. The two began a family of their own and had three talented

children who perform with their parents.

Now 19 years old, Dalton is the guitar player, sings lead and harmony, writes songs for the group and takes care of all sched-uled bookings.

Dillon, 17, plays progressive style mandolin, sings lead and harmony, writes songs, and incor-porates the message pertaining to the music. He has a heart for mis-sion work and personal ministry.

The fi ddle player of the group is 12-year-old Hannah. She packs a powereful lead along with har-mony vocals. She is ambitious in her career in singing for the Lord.

Gaylon drives the bus, picks

the banjo, sings baritone and tenor and is the spokesman of the group.

The Harper Family’s music varies due to the fact the four of the fi ve sing lead, and three con-tribute by writing original songs. Although their style of music is bluegrass, it veers toward con-temporary acoustic instrumenta-tion that draws people from all genres

The Bar None Cowboy Church meets at 7 p.m. every Thursday at the building next to Culver’s in Newton. Food and fellowship are offered before each service. For more information, contact Pastor Dave at (641) 521-4354 .

Cardinals are Little Hawkeye champs Newton defeats Pella in three straight sets on Senior Night

NEWTON — There was a hesitation. Every-one for Newton was sure the volleyball returned by Pella landed outside the line. They had to wait for the offi cial’s signal.

A whistle and the of-fi cial’s signal touched off a roar and celebration Tuesday night by New-ton’s Cardinals and their fans. The Cardinals are the 2013 Little Hawk-eye Conference volley-ball champions.

They needed to knockoff Pella’s Little Dutch, who came into the match undefeated in conference play. Check. The Cardinals did it in three straight sets, 25-20, 26-24, 26-24.

On Senior Night, the senior-laden Car-dinals celebrated New-ton’s fi rst-ever LHC volleyball champion-ship. Newton has been a member of the Little Hawkeye for fi ve years.

“There aren’t words enough to describe what this means to our team,” said Holly Vander Pol, one of seven seniors on the squad. “We just went out there tonight and gave it all we had. This is huge for us.”

Three team goals were set by the Cardinals going into 2013, which would be the fi nal sea-son for head coach Kim

Florke. Set a new team record in season match-wins. Check. Win Little Hawkeye Conference championship. Check.

Secure a Class 4A state tournament berth. Working on it.

Newton, which is 13th ranked in 4A, still has to play at Southeast Polk Thursday to fi nish out the regular season. The Cardinals are 26-11.

“Wow, this is great for our kids. They are a determined and focused group. They come ready to practice hard and it shows in matches,” said Florke, who was pre-sented a plaque before the match in recognition of her 14 years as head coach of the Cardinals. “This was the best home crowd we’ve had since I’ve been here. The stu-dents were great for our team.”

“We have South-east Polk on Thursday, which gives us a great

quality match before re-gional play,” Florke said.

The Cardinals earned a fi rst-round bye in next week’s Class 4A, Region 4 tournament. Newton hosts the winner of next Monday’s Grinnell-ADM match on Hal-loween, Oct. 31. The match is set for 7 p.m. at NHS.

Tuesday night was a sweep for Newton vol-leyball. The junior varsi-ty earned a 25-21, 14-25, 15-13 win. The fresh-men fi nished up an un-defeated conference run with a 25-16, 26-10 win.

Newton’s varsity knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Pella came in at 20-14 and had beaten Newton on the NHS court during the Cardi-nal Invitational.

The fi rst set was

back-and-forth early. A three-point serv-ing run by senior Jen-nifer Ventling put the Cardinals up 10-7 and they never trailed again. Freshman setter Megan Pressgrove had a three-point run — two were aces — to bump the lead to 22-13. Newton won 25-20.

Jocelyn Sheets/Daily NewsWelcome to the block — Newton’s Bailey Beaderstadt (4) blocks a hit by Pella’s Makenna Bogaard (6) with Cardinal teammate Michaela Bleeker (13) right there to lend a hand if needed during Tuesday’s “winner-take-all” Little Hawkeye Conference match. The Cardinals, on Senior Night, swept Pella to claim the school’s fi rst LHC volleyball championship. Newton won 25-20, 26-24, 26-24.

BAXTER — Confi dence is ev-erything.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s vol-leyball team kept its season going in a straight set win on Tuesday night over Colfax-Mingo 25-15, 25-14, 25-20. CMB has come a long way from the group of girls that broke camp for the Raiders in late August, according to coach Scott Ranck. Ranck noted the rad-ical difference in confi dence and self-assuredness from August to now.

“We had a lot of young players at the start of the year,” he said. “Just going through our confer-ence, which is such a tough con-ference every night, and learning from things we did right and mis-takes they just started to gel. We just gained more confi dence as the year went on, which is what you would hope of young kids.”

Senior Abbie Haupert showed some talent and enthusiasm during the match, getting her teammates involved in celebrations follow-ing every kill. The senior was the most polished Raider player com-ing into the year, but Ranck com-mented that what has been the key

to CMB’s improvement is getting auxiliary players to step up when they needed it.

“We have been working on that,” Ranck said. “I don’t think there’s any doubt in anybody’s mind who our go-to person is, but through-out the year, different girls have kind of stepped up each night. Alex Hiavacek had three kills early in the game. Payge ( Jurgens) came on there at the end, It ’s just nice to see the improvement they have made.”

CMB jumped out to a fast start. Locked up in a close set early, Haupert took control, serving up an ace to break a 6-6 tie. Jurgens spiked a kill to the floor later on to give CMB an 11-7 lead. That thunderous spike prompted C-M coach Brian Warrick to call for a breather. Coming out of the

timeout, Haupert served home another ace to take a 13-7 edge.

The Tigerhawks fought back, with Amy Russell answering on an ace serve. However, Katie Ziesman spiked one for a kill to make it 14-9. Jurgens and Zies-man each scored kills on back to back points. A later ace by Jurgens made it 20-11. With Haupert serving, Jurgens had a tip to bring it to set point. Mackenzie Schmitz’ ace ended the first set.

CMB opened the second set on a 5-2 run, which in-cluded two aces by Han-nah McWhirter and a kill by Haupert. Anna Baldwin answered with a kill for the Tigerhawks, and an ace by Allison Teed brough C-M within one point. CMB be-gan to pull away yet again when Rylee Thompson scored a kill to bring the

score to 11-8.A b b e y

A p p l e g a t e , Haupert and M c W h i r t e r scored the next five points for the Raiders, put-ting CMB ahead 17-9. Schmitz was once again the girl on the service line as the set ended in favor of the Raiders.

C M B lightened the mood with an early kill by Haupert. The senior rose up from the floor for a kill, but mistimed her hit. As the ball landed to the floor, both she and Ranck ex-changed laughs and shrugs as if to say, “It ’s just one of those nights.”

Applegate scored an ace serve to make it 5-2. C-M’s Jade Lewis answered with a later ace to make it 5-2. Schmitz had an ace to pull ahead 9-5. CMB took a 14-7 lead on a spike. C-M rallied back, and Lewis’ kill made the score 17-12. Haupert scored a kill in the longest back and forth rally of the match to make it 19-12. C-M rallied to pull within four points, but they hit the ball into the net, ending the match and the season for the Tigerhawks.

It was a forgettable season for C-M. The Tigerhawks netted five wins on the sea-

son, but with only three se-niors leaving the team, next year could be a bounce back season.

Ranck emphasized the fast start as a big reason for the Raider win.

He knows that needs to continue when the Raiders face West Marshall on Oct. 29.

“We’ve been really been working on starting strong and getting focuses,” he said. “We have had a stretch the last two or three matches where that hasn’t happened. It was almost like we were waiting for tournaments to starts, and tonight they come out and do this. So, there you go. We had good serves, moved our feet, talk-ed and had lots of energy.”

Dustin Turner/Daily NewsColfax-Mingo’s Anna Baldwin soars at the netfor a spike during the loss to CMB on Tuesday. Baldwin had 28 kills and 39 aces on the year for the Tigerhawks.

Macy Lanser went 10-of-12 serving with two aces serves. Vander Leest was 11-of-12 with one ace serve while senior Kristal Beyer was 10-of-10 serving with one ace serve. Cullen served up an ace.

Macy L a n -ser was credited w i t h 15 digs on the n i g h t for Lyn-n v i l l e -S u l l y . C u l l e n made eight digs and Vander Leest had seven. Beyer, Van Rees and senior Lyndsay Terpstra each came up with six digs.

Pella Christian’s senior Lauren Jungling put up 28 set assists and went 13-of-14 serving the volleyball with four aces. Junior Abby Pleima had a tremendous night at the serving line, 24-of-24 and three ace serves. Juniro Alyssa Starkey had one ace serve.

At the net, junior Han-nah Beltman pounded down nine kills and had one solo block. Becca Gritters, a ju-nior, had eight kills and a block assist. Senior Logan De Graaf hit seven kills while junior Christa Veen-stra had five kills and a block assist.

Jungling had four kills. Starkey and junior Laura Nicholson each had one kill. Starkey was credited with 12 digs to lead the Eagles, followed by Pleima with nine and Jungling with four digs .

BOSTON (AP) — David Ortiz missed nearly half of last year’s disas-trous Red Sox season with a heel injury. Then he was sidelined with it through-out spring training and the start of this season.

There were whispers that the slugger who had won two World Series titles with Boston was at the end of the line.

And Big Papi heard them.

“People are al-ways going to talk trash,” the slug-ging designated hitter said Tuesday. “You’re never going to make everyone happy so what you do is just come in, do your thing and what can those people do about it? In my case, I’m done putting attention to what people have to say.”

They’ve been saying nice things going into Wednesday night’s opener against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Ortiz led the Red Sox with a .309 batting average, 30 homers and 103 RBIs this season. In Game 2 of the AL championship series against the Detroit Tigers, he hit a game-tying grand slam in the eighth. Boston won 6-5 on Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s RBI single in the ninth.

But Ortiz makes a huge contribution off the fi eld with his bubbly personality and winning smile.

Cardinals reliever Randy Choate saw that when he was playing baseball in the Dominican Republic in the offseason.

“We had a pickup softball game and it was an off day and we were all hang-ing out,” he said. “I remember someone threw one and he hit one, literally, 500 feet. It was unbelievable, but he was just there having a good time and hang-ing out with everybody, being down to earth.”

Red Sox third baseman Will Middle-brooks was in awe when he saw Ortiz the fi rst time he went to spring training.

“He carries himself very well,” Mid-dlebrooks said. “Just the confi dence he has rubs off on everybody. Then last year, getting to know him, being able to work with him, all the things he’s done for this game, being there to help the rookies, he’s such an open book. That’s what surprised me the most.”

But last year was a tough one.The Red Sox’s 69-93 record was their

worst in nearly half a century. Bobby Valentine’s stint as manager ended when he was fi red after his fi rst season.

Ortiz hit .318 with 23 homers and 60 RBIs but played in just 90 games.

“What happened last year was kind of a freak of an injury,” Red Sox out-fielder Daniel Nava said, “but what he was doing before that point, everyone saw that he was locked in. If there ever was a time to say ‘Papi’s got more life in him,’ it was then. He’s also become a smarter hitter.”

When Ortiz’s heel injury persisted in spring training, the fans’ worries contin-ued. But not for the players.

“We knew what was going on,” Nava said. “Obviously, you can’t relay every-thing to the public, so since we had the inside track I wasn’t worried. I don’t think anyone else was worried. We knew he was going to be back.”

Now he has a chance for his third championship in 10 years, and Cardinals pitchers know the damage he can do.

“I don’t think I would be over-whelmed” facing him, starter Joe Kelly said. “I just see him as another big power left-handed hitter like Adrian Gonzalez. He’s just another guy who can do dam-age with guys on base if you’re not care-ful.”

Joaquin Benoit wasn’t careful. So Ortiz tagged the Tigers closer for

the grand slam that turned around the ALCS.

Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal saw that homer.

“I think even without that, you knew that he’s going to have the opportunity to make a huge impact with one swing,” he said.

And if he puts Boston ahead late, closer Koji Uehara is likely to save the game and then get picked up and carried over Ortiz’s shoulder — a trademark of recent wins.

“I don’t mind,” Uehara said. “He’s ob-viously the face of the team. If he’s doing well, our team is also going to do well.”

Papi back in World Series after ignoring naysayers

Texas high school coach Tim Bu-chanan benched his starters after only 21 plays, kept to a conservative ground game and even allowed the clock to run uninterrupted after half-time to hasten the fi nal whistle. Still, his Bearcats won 91-0.

Now the coach is facing formal ac-cusations of bullying.

The impressive victory for unde-feated Aledo High School, a football powerhouse in suburban Fort Worth that has put up similar numbers against other schools, has forced an investigation after a parent from the opposing team fi led a bullying com-plaint. The complaint, which must be investigated under state law, says

Buchanan should have done more to prevent the lopsided score.

“It wasn’t good for anybody,” Bu-chanan said of the Friday win over Western Hills in a Class 4A matchup. “I’ve sat and gone over and over and over it on what we could have done differently. The score could have very easily been 150 to nothing.”

Under state law, Aledo’s principal must investigate the complaint and prepare a report. The complaint was fi led with the school district, which the law requires to provide bullying complaint forms on its websites.

The University Interscholastic League, the governing body for high school sports in Texas, only has a mer-cy rule for six-man football that ends a game when one team gets ahead by 45 points by halftime or later. There

is no mercy rule for 11-man football, though coaches can agree to end a game early, UIL spokeswoman Kate Hector said.

Buchanan said Tuesday he wasn’t aware of that option.

There were about 1,500 fans still in the stands at the end of the game, most of them Aledo’s, he said. About 5,000 were at the Bearcats’ stadium in Aledo at the beginning because it was a recognition night for band members’ parents. A cold front that brought rain added another reason to leave when the game started to get out of hand, Buchanan said.

While blowouts are not uncom-mon in Texas high school football, Aledo has racked up several of them this season, due in part to being placed in a new district that has not been as

strong in football. The Bearcats’ av-erage victory margin in four district games is 77 points.

The UIL bases its realignment de-cisions on enrollment and geographic location to minimize travel time, a move aimed at reducing class ab-sences. When Aledo was placed in a different district before last season, its travel time to the furthest location was cut from two hours to about 35 miles, Buchanan said.

“It certainly didn’t seem like they were trying to run up the score in this case,” Hector said.

Aledo Principal Dan Peterson said his report on the bullying complaint should be completed this week. It will be given to the father who fi led the complaint and the staff at Western Hills.

Newton started the second set strong. Vander Pol served four straight points, two came on senior Michaela Bleeker kills. The Little Dutch an-swered with a four-point run. Pella moved to a 13-11 lead.

Down 16-13, Pressgrove came up with a kill at the net to put the volleyball back in the Cardinals’ hands. Se-nior Bailey Beaderstadt rang up three points, one on a Ventling block.

The Cardinals tied the set up at 19-19 and took the lead again with Pressgrove serving. Then it was back-and-forth. Senior Amber Karsten served up the winning point, 26-24.

Beaderstadt, who sent 19-of-19 at the service line for the math, served up three straight points to push the Cardinals to a 7-2 lead in the third set. Newton maintained its lead, fending off several challenges by the Little Dutch.

Beaderstadt had another three-point run, two points came on kills by Pressgrove and Bleeker, to make it 19-15. Realty was starting to sink in for the Cardinals.

“The seven seniors have played together for a long time. This was our last chance, and coach’s (Florke) last chance, at a conference championship,” Beaderstadt said.

Pressgrove’s third ace serve of the match had the Cardi-nals one point away from the championship, 24-17.

“The seniors have been re-ally good to work with me. They adjust so well to how I set, which sometimes isn’t as good as I would like,” Press-grove said.

But the Little Dutch weren’t going away quietly. They made a defensive play to get the serve back. With senior Regan Nelson serving, Pella scored six straight points to tie the set at 24-all.

“We needed just one point. We talked about calming

down and doing what we do,” said senior libero Kacy Cazett.

Senior Sydney Bergman and Beaderstadt were on the bench during the Pella run.

“It was tough just sitting there but unbelievable — we were one point away from conference championship,” Bergman said. “This is awe-some. We grew a lot as a team this year. We just click well.”

“This team just fi nds a way to get it done at the end. That’s what I like about this group,” Florke said.

Newton stopped the Pel-la run, leading 25-24, and Ventling, a senior who had been sidelined early in the season with an ankle injury, serving for set, match and championship point. The teams rallied a little with the volleyball then Pella hit it back over — and out.

“This is what we’ve been working toward all season. Through all the off-sea-

son, we worked and all of it paid off for us tonight,” said Bleeker, who leads the con-ference in kills and racked up 13 more against Pella. “We’re a very superstitious team. Even though we didn’t have a full day of school, nothing changed in our routine.”

Bleeker was 36-of-45 in net attacks on the night. She came up with 10 digs, plus served for four points. Press-grove put up 24 set assists but also worked the net, 20-of-22 attacks for eight kills. Press-grove went 13-of-13 serving with seven points, plus had eight digs.

“My heart was racing, We all were confi dent but nervous about tonight,” Ventling said. “The key tonight against Pel-la was we picked up their tips at the net well. We played our game. This is awesome.”

Vander Pol (18-of-20) and Karsten (15-of-20) each had four kills, while Ventling and

Beaderstadt each put down two kills. Beaderstadt served for 12 points to lead the team. Vander Pol served for fi ve points. Ventling and Karsten each had four points serving.

Cazett picked up nine digs and went 14-of-19 in serve receive. Karsten came up with 13 digs and Vander Pol had

nine digs.“I’ve never been a confer-

ence champion before. We stayed composed. We played through the pressure of being at home on Senior Night and conference championship on the line,” Karsten said. “We’ve achieved the second of our goals tonight.”

NEWTON — Newton’s junior varsity volleyball team has had a tough 2013 sea-son. It played its fi nal home match of the season Tuesday. There’s no place like home.

The Cardinal junior varsi-ty defeated Pella, 25-21, 14-25, 15-13 to conclude Little Hawkeye Conference action.

Newton’s freshmen rolled to their seventh Lit-tle Hawkeye Conference win — 25-16, 26-10 over Pella Tuesday. The Cardinal freshmen went undefeated in conference play.

For the junior varsity, se-nior Sydney Bergman had two kills. Alyssa Bartels put down four kills. Katylin Ahn served up two aces, downed seven kills, and made 12 digs. Allison Ergenbright had three kills.

Sydney Hemann put up 14 set assists, served two aces, and made six digs. Stephanie Hoesbelheinrich had two kills and six set as-sists. Maddy Berstler came up with 13 digs, and downed four kills. Fran Lucas had seven digs.

In the freshman match, Ryanne Rausch went 13-of-14 at the service line with fi ve ace serves. Emma Meyer put down seven kills on a 10-of-11 night at the net. Mor-gan Allen was 7-of-7 serving with one ace, and went 8-of-10 on net attacks with four kills.

Courtney Jacobsen was 10-of-11 on net attacks and delivered four kills. Bailey Davis was 7-of-7 at the net with two kills. Taylor Shi-pley put up 15 set assists.

Astrograph

Intuition kicks in on this first full day of the Scorpio sun, featuring the moon also in a water-sign ele-ment. These psychic place-ments deepen our knowl-edge of human nature and key us into the nuances and behaviors that people use to hide secrets, handle dif-ficult feelings and smooth over personal differences. TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Oct. 24). It’s your year to turn a mediocre situa-tion into something truly remarkable. Group efforts are favored in November, and together you’ll make the important difference you couldn’t make alone. Regardless of the weather in January, your heart feels like an endless stretch of sunny skies. Aquarius and Pisces people adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 13, 6, 22, 41 and 30. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You may not like the way things are managed, but you know better than to log a complaint. The surest, fastest way to get things in order is to order

them yourself. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). The odds are in your favor, but they stop short of guaranteeing your success. Those who don’t act in accordance with their own good luck have less of a chance of success than those who act to conquer their bad luck. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). When the world shows its less than beauti-ful side, you may find it intolerable, but you won’t be discouraged. Instead, you’ll work to build your own beautiful world. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Imagination is not an impediment to logical be-havior. Your creativity will serve to enhance a reason-able plan or add an inter-esting twist to a sensible choice. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Things won’t go com-pletely according to your script. Still, if you take the time to plan out your day, you will be glad in the end

because much of what you plot will come to fruition. ARIES (March 21-April 19). Find out what people want before you start giv-ing them things. If you do it the other way around, you’ll have given what’s valuable to you and you will not have solved their problem. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). It will be better to say less, especially when you’re broaching a diffi-cult topic. You can always add more words and infor-mation later, but you can never take back what you already said. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You may feel it is your duty to do something, and yet you may not agree with the thing you must do. In this case, it’s time to change your role because you are no longer suited to it. CANCER (June 22-July 22). One small light can be seen through miles of dark-ness. You’ll be that light in

someone’s dark hour today. Don’t be surprised if this person starts to depend on you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Be careful of how you wield that wonderful sense of hu-mor. When you make your friends laugh, they will add you to their short list of favorite people. Can you handle the popularity? VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Acting is not just for movie and stage stars; most people do it all the time. You play a role at work that requires you to bring a dif-ferent face to the job. The people who know you only in one context don’t know you very well.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You will accept some of destiny’s dealings, but not all of them -- and that’s good. Progress is made by those who aren’t content to let the whims of fate knock them around.
