1. Feature Description, Integrity, Eligibility:

The feature is a one room prairie school on a concrete foundation. The gable roof of the main body and the entry are covered with ribbed meatl sheeting. The soffits are closed. There is a newer rid brick chimney on the west slope. The building measures 28 feet north to south and 20 feet east to west with the gable entry with the salt box line roof to cover the porch measures 12 feet by 8 feet.

A wide trim board begins the exterior siding just under the soffits of the peaks. The remainder of the siding is 6 inch wood lap with 6 inch wood corner trim. the school has very good paint. There is post supporting the porch roof at the northeast comer. A concrete stoop leads to a 5 panel wood door going into the entry. The entry walls are covered with beadboard. At the south half of the entry are two toilets. Each small room has a fixed pane window. There are two double hung, two over two, windows on the east wall of the entry with a decorative fan window above them. There are 4 double hung, two over two, windows on the south side as well as the west side and only one is shuttered. All the glass is intact. The interior walls of the school are covered with lathe and plaster and there is wainscot. The high ceiling is lathe and plaster as well with schoolhouse globe fixtures. There is a furnace near the north wall of the school. Blackboards are on the east wall from the entry door to the north wall and around the corner and about half way across the north wall. Those light fixtures and exterior wiring with a meter holder suggest electricity.

There are farms to the south and southeast, on a paved road. Sloughs southwest of the school and farm fields all directions. The immediate schools grounds are kept mowed.

Feature 1 consists of a school. The school is L-shaped, 30' N/S and 30' E/W at the widest point. The foundation of Feature 1 is concrete. This includes a concrete front step and porch on the eastern side of the school. There is broken clear window glass on the porch step, but, as it is unaffiliated with any windows, it is unclear where it came from. There are wooden beams and some scrap metal in the same pile. There is an additional concrete extension from the foundation on the southeast corner of the structure, including a hatch with a metal wire handle. The school has white-painted wooden horizontal siding. The porch is roofed by a continuation of the roof of the base of the L, and is supported by a turned post. There is a single door facing north. The entry-way of the school (the base of the L) has a pair of single hung windows facing east and a single arched window with a wooden keystone addition to the frame. An arm for a light fixture extends out from between the windows. There are two fixed windows on the southern elevation of the entry room, and four single hung windows on the southern elevation of the main room. There are four single hung windows on the western elevation of the main room. There are no windows on the northern elevation of the building. Some of the windows are tarped over. The remaining windows have traces of white paint on them from a modern repainting of the school. There is a vent just below in the peak in the roof and the eaves on the southern and northern elevations of the structure. Feature 1 has a gabled roof covered with sheet metal. There is a metal roof ridge. On the eastern elevation, there is a roof return on the porch facing west that maintains original wooden shingles. There is a brick chimney in good condition on the northwest edge of the roof, just below (west) of the roof ridge. The building is wired for electricity. The relationship, if any, between Feature 1 and the McCullough School, which is depicted on the USGS 7.5' Crosby SE (1948) map as being 2,000' north of Feature 1, is unknown. Feature 1 is in good condition. Feature 1 maintains spatial integrity and aspects of structural integrity. Feature 1 maintains a rural setting, but lacks known associations with other structures. In isolation, Feature 1 is unevaluated for the National Register of Historic Places. Feature 1 is part of Site JUP-16023-409, which is unevaluated for the NRHP because of Feature 1.

From Crosby, ND, travel west on ND-5. Turn left (south) onto ND-42 and continue for 10.8 miles. The site is on the right (west) of the highway.

Site JUP-16023-409 is located in a primarily agricultural region of northwest North Dakota. The site is on a relatively high point within the knob and kettle terrain, and so the view is largely unimpeded except for tree lines. The vegetation within the site is largely disturbance grasses, and most of the surrounding land is planted with crops.

Site JUP-16023-409 consists of a school and a dump containing CMS from throughout the 20th century. The dump includes machinery. Site JUP-16023-409 is 1,235 feet south of Site Lead 32DVx143, a CMS of unknown time frame recorded by Benson in 1980. Site JUP-16023-409 is in fair condition. Feature 1, the school, is in good condition. Feature 1 maintains aspects of structural integrity. The site as a whole maintains aspects of spatial integrity and a rural, agricultural setting. Site JUP-16023-409 is unevaluated for the NRHP. The historic dump and CMS component of the site is independently recommended not eligible for the NRHP and fails to meet the criteria for eligibility. Further work is recommended to better understand the eligibility of the school, and therefore the site, and the relationship to other historic sites and site leads in the area.
