Self Assessment Pg 201. What percentage is 32 out of 800?
2. In a pocket of oranges, 8 are rotten and 24 are still fine. Work out what percentage of the total number of oranges is rotten.
32 / 800 = 4 / 100 = 4%
Total number of oranges = 8 + 24 = 32Percentage rotten apples = 8 / 32 = ¼ = 25%

b. In the year 2007, there were 20 485 learners enrolled in a certain FET programme throughout South Africa. If 16 626 of them passed, how many failed?
c. When a certain number is increased by 47 676 it becomes 100 000. Find that number.
Learners failed = Total learners – learners passed= 20485 – 16 626= 3859
100 000 – 47 676 = 52 324

d. Joe has R987. Beverley has R25 more than Joe. If Petra has R376 less than Joe, how much have the three people altogether?
Beverly = R987 + R25= R1 012
Petra = R987 – R376= R611
Total = Joe + Beverly + Petra= R987 + R1 012 + R611= R2 610

e. A nurse has 12m of cotton material which she wants to cut into equal pieces of 75 cm long each. How mean pieces of material does she get? The material is 1m wide. She will cut the 75cm long pieces into strips 10 cm wide. How many strips will she eventually have?
No of pieces = 12m 0.75 = 16 strips
No of strips = 16 x (100cm / 10cm)= 16 x 10= 160 strips
