“Access to books is the single biggest barrier to literacy development in the United States and beyond. If we can solve the problem of access, we will be well on the road to realizing educational parity—a goal which has eluded this country for generations.”
-Susan B. Neuman, Former U.S. Assistant Secretary for Elementary Education

Unite for Literacy Blog: Addressing Current issues and
topics in literacy
• The importance of reading fluency as an isolated descriptor of productive reading behavior is currently overemphasized in state and school based reading assessments.
• Avid readers can read well AND they choose to read.
• Individuals have to be excited about reading before they will ever put in the necessary hard work to get good at reading.
• This begs the question,
“Why don’t we see discussions of avid reading in the news alongside discussions of fluent reading?”
