The club is believed to have been formed in 1892 as John Smith’s FC. It wasn’t until 1923 that the Tadcaster Albion AFC name was adopted. In the early years the club played in the local York League. In 1948 Albion won the York League. They continued competing in the York League during the 1950’s & 60’s.

Tadcaster Albion, in the early days, played home games on the site of the cricket ground on Station Road, before moving to the Ings ground, near to where the present Samuel Smith Brewery Packaging Block now stands. Changing facilities were in the town, at the rear of the Falcon Public House on Chapel Street, and it was a common Saturday afternoon sight to see nets, corner flags, buckets, oranges, players and officials trekking through the town.

Down the years the club has played in several leagues. In early times, Barkston Ash and later still the Yorkshire and Northern Counties East Leagues.

Football continued on the Ings ground until 1960, when the club moved 100 yards up river to its present home at the Park.

In 1973 the club joined the Yorkshire League Division 3 and were promoted in 1975 & 1977 to reach Division 1, relegation was to follow in 1979 & 1980.

In 1982/83 they became a founding member of the Northern Counties East League, originally in the NCEL Division Two North before league reorganisations led them to Division One in 1991. They rarely finish in the top half of the league in the 1990’s and finished bottom in 2001/02 & 2003/04.

At the start of 2004/05, Jim Collis became manager and at this point fortunes on the pitch started to improve dramatically. In his first season, Albion finished 5th in the league, the following year a 3rd place finish meant promotion was missed by one point.

Jimmy Reid took over as manager in 2006, but his time was blighted by off the field problems. An attempted hostile takeover by dissident commit-tee members took a massive amount of money to fight. Then in Nov 2007, an attempted arson attack on the clubhouse caused a lot of damage.

Paul Marshall took over at the start of 2008/09, in his first season he played mostly local players and the team struggled and finished 17th.

In 2009/10, with an influx of a few new key players, Albion won the NCEL Division One title.

In 2010, Rob Northfield, took over as Chairman of Tadcaster Albion (2010) Ltd, and the club became a company limited by guarantee.

Albion finished fourth in their first season in the NCEL Premier Division and won the NCEL President’s Cup, beating Farsley AFC 5-1 in the final. That was followed by an 8th place finish in 2011/12 and 6th in 2012/13.

In the 2013/14 season Rob Northfield resigned a few days before the start of the season and i2i Sports Ltd agreed to take effective control of the club and company, with Matthew Gore becoming the new Chairman. In 2014/2015 the Brewers lead the NCEL Premier for most of the season, but a poor run of games in March led to them finally finishing in third.

An excellent run in the FA Vase saw them make history by making it through to the Quarter Final of the FA Vase where they drew a record breaking crowd of 1,307, but were narrowly beaten by Highworth Town.

The Brewers also broke many other records throughout the season – taking more than 200 fans away to Armthorpe Welfare on a cold Tuesday night where they went on to win 10-0.

At the end of the season, the club opted not to renew their contract with manager Paul Marshall, and two weeks later former Harrogate Railway boss Billy Miller was unveiled as the club’s new manager.

TAFC Directors’ Notes

Welcome to tonight’s League Cup Semi Final against Albion Sports. We hope everyone who has travelled here tonight from Bradford enjoys the game and has a safe journey home.

Albion Sports have finished the season in 11th place where they have been out of both the title race and the relegation battle for some time. With little to play for in recent weeks, we know that they will be fired up for today’s game – with a place in the final against either Bridlington Town or Cleethorpes Town at stake.

It’s been an amazing end to the season for everyone associated with Tadcaster Albion. We won the league with a game still to play, and tonight we are just 90 minutes away from a place in the League Cup Final. We played 10 games in the month of April; all of which were mini cup finals of their own. There’s no doubting that the players are weary, but with one trophy already in the cabinet, everyone is committed to finishing the job and winning Taddy’s first ever league and cup double.

We were delighted with Saturday’s second half comeback against Athersley Recreation. When the lads came into the dressing room 3-0 down at half time, they could easily have given in to tired legs and the satisfaction that the league had already been won two days earlier. But the one thing to note about this current Tadcaster Albion squad is the never say

die spirit. And in one last hurrah, they came back out and showed grit, passion, determination and class to win the game 4-3. Nobody wanted to end the season with a defeat, and the players did everything they needed to do to ensure this wasn’t the case.

Hopefully this isn’t our last game of the season. The Cup Final takes place on Saturday 14th May at Garforth Town and we’d love nothing more than to be in it. This is however our last programme of the season, so we’d like to take this opportunity to once again thank everyone who has given their time to either support, play, work, coach or volunteer at this great club. Ever since we took over the club during the 2013/14 season, we have always said our goal is to get into the Conference North. That has not changed. Apart from the fact that we’re now one step closer!

Enjoy tonight’s game. Fingers crossed we can keep the dream of the double alive!

The i2i Sports Directors Matt Gore, James Gore & Kent Mayall

TAFC Match PreviewTonight we welcome the fans, players of officials of Albion Sports to the i2i Stadium for our NCEL League Cup Semi Final. The Winners of tonight’s game will play either Bridlington Town or Cleethorpes Town in the final at Garforth Town on Saturday the 14th. The current holders of the League Cup are Handsworth Parramore who beat Cleethorpes Town 4-3 in last seasons final.

The Lions have reached the Semi Final by beating Nostell Miners Welfare, Teversal, Barton Town Old Boys and Rainworth Miners Welfare. The Brewers have had wins against Parkgate, Grimsby Borough and Knaresborough Town. In the league, The Brewers won the away game in April 2-0 through an own goal and one from Tom Corner. The game at Tadcaster

in October was a 4-4 draw after The Brewers were leading 4-2 with 13 minutes remaining. George Conway scoring a hat trick and the other goal being from Josh Greening. Albion Sports finished the league season in 11th place with 59 points from their 42 games played. Away from home, they had 7 wins and 5 draws from their 21 games played on the road.

This will be my final notes in the programme as I have decided to concentrate my time on my photography next season, thank you for reading over the past few years. I will go for a narrow hard fought 2-1 win for The Brewers this evening.

TAFC Manager’s Notes

Good evening everyone and wel-come to what will be our last home game of the season. We extend a very warm welcome to Albion Sports, management team, the players and hope they have a safe journey home after the game.

Although tonight’s semi-final is equally important to us all we cannot help but reflect on what has been an outstanding achievement across our league campaign. It has really been a case of ‘nearly’ on so many occasions in the past with 3rd being Taddy’s highest finish. When we came into the breech at the start of this year’s campaign, after some great early discussions with the owners, we knew we had a chance. If we could beat the teams in and around the top six and then keep picking up the points we always knew we would be there or there-abouts come April.

I have highlighted to the players since early in our tenure that self-belief was just as important as being able to play. Physical preparation was never a problem, we worked that out very early watching them train. Their motivation, hard work and commitment were very evident. And so we set about convincing this group of players that they really did have the mental strength to go all the way. Week in, week out we set about convincing them. So much so, they can often be heard mimicking me: ‘Anyone, anytime, anyplace’. Was I concerned? No! Because we knew they were listening to me.

We built up resilience, a hunger and a desire, evident against Pontefract, Bridlington and Pickering when late goals gave us nine points instead

of three. How important those wins went on to be. The wins against Handsworth and Worksop will last long in the memory, but for me, three of our biggest wins came against Albion Sports, Thackley and Pickering; all away and all within the space of a few days. Our rivals will have been looking at those fixtures expecting us to drop points, but by then the lads had built up that resilience that enabled them to grind out wins, often keeping clean sheets along the way. I would love to highlight each individual player, but feel at this moment that’s not important. What’s important is that every one of them, including those that have played just once, has played a big part in our season.

We hope to continue that form tonight, but often after a big event like winning the league there is a big come down. It is diffi-cult to control momentum and football is no different. We want to progress, but we should not lose sight of just how hard this group of players have worked over the past two weeks. Since our opponents last played on the 23 April, we have played no fewer than four games. However despite this, we showed on Saturday that we are capable of winning in any given situation and will go all out tonight to win the game.

We want to finish by saying thank you for your support. The owners, fans and volunteers have been outstanding across the season. We knew it was always going to be a difficult task following on from the previous management team, and we knew it would take time. I hope we have fulfilled expectation and look forward to having many more adventures together.

Yours in Sport, The Management #tadallover

Head 2 Head Albion Sports FCAs this evening’s visitors to the i2i Stadium, Albion Sports, have only been members of the Northern Counties East Football League (NCEL) since 2011, there have only been a handful of meetings between the clubs.

They first met at Farsley Celtic’s Throstle Nest ground in September 2013, when the Brewers came from behind to draw 1-1, thanks to a Carl Stewart goal. Three months later, a crowd of 221 saw the visitors winning 1-0 at Tadcaster, with Liam Ormsby netting the Lions’ winning goal. This result brought an end to the Brewers’ 24 game unbeaten run in the NCEL Premier Division.

Last season brought two narrow victories for the Brewers. The fixture at the i2i Stadium in November finished 2-1, de-spite Tadcaster going 0-1 down to a 78th minute goal. Liam Ormsby, now a Brewer, scored two penalties in the final eight minutes, bringing huge relief to the majority of the 399 strong crowd.

The return match at Throstle Nest, in April, resulted in a 1-0 tri-umph for the Brewers. The top scorer for the 2014/15 season, Josh Greening, scoring the winning goal in the 64th minute.

Earlier this season, with the Brewers trailing Worksop Town in the NCEL table, the Lions visited the i2i Stadium to face a

home team and 309 fans, who were hoping for three valuable points.

The hosts took a 20 minute lead through George Conway - the first goal in the opening 45 minutes of games between the clubs - but the game really came to life in the second half. Marcus Edwards equalised for the visitors on 50 minutes but Josh Greening immediately restored Tadcaster’s lead. An Edwards penalty, five minutes later, brought the teams level again. The game looked as if it had been won when a couple of goals for Conway completed his hat-trick and opened up a 4-2 lead with around 15 minutes to play. However, two late Alex Cusack goals lev-elled the score at 4-4 and shared the points.

Last month, the Brewers won the away fixture 2-0, with two headed first half goals from Josh Greening free-kicks. Andy Milne (or an own goal according to the NCEL website) and Tom Corner - his first goal for the club - added the finishing touches. Albion Sports’ second best league crowd of the season - 125 - witnessed the first goalless sec-ond half in matches between the two clubs.

Prior to this evening’s League Cup semi final, 14 of the 17 goals in the six league games between the Brewers and the Lions have been scored in the second half. So, don’t leave early!

Visitors’ History

Albion Sports Football Club was founded in 1974 and initially played in the Bradford Amateur Sunday League.

After a brief spell in the lower divisions, gaining promotions on a regular basis and winning the Amateur District and Senior cups along the way, Albion Sports in 1995/96 won the Premier league title for the first time, this was to prove the catalyst for what was to come.

Albion Sports won a further five league titles, two County Cups, three District Cups and seven Senior Cups. Other highlights included reaching the final of the National F.A Umbro Sunday Cup on two occasions. The first in 2000 at the City Ground (Nottingham Forest) Albion Sports were beaten 1 -0 by Prestige Brighams (Hull). The second in 2005 at Anfield (Liverpool F.C), this time beaten 3 -2 by Gossoms End (London).

Albion Sports have been honoured by receiving three civic receptions from the City of Bradford as well as winning an award of ‘Ambassadors of West Yorkshire’ beating the likes of Patrick Stewart (Star Trek actor) and the late Richard Whitley (Countdown presenter) into 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Albion Sports resigned from Sunday football in 2007 in order to progress up through the Football Association pyramid.

In 2007/08 Albion Sports joined the Telegraph and Argus league and won promotion in the first season as well as winning the League Cup.

Albion Sports F.C were elected to the WRCAFC in 2008, gained promotion in the first season and also won the District Cup. In 2009/10 Albion Sports finished runners-up in the Premiership and won the Divisional Cup. In 2010/11 they again finished runners-up and were then successfully elected to join the NCEL 2011/12 season.

Albion Sports missed out on promotion by a solitary point in their debut season but quickly rectified this the following season (2012/13) by gaining promotion to the Premier division as Champions.

Albion Sports finished in a very creditable 6th place in their debut premier League season (2013/14).

As with their record in the Northern Counties East Football League (NCEL), the Brewers have only achieved any significant success in the League Cup in recent years. For the majority of the last 34 seasons, there has been very little to cheer about in the League Cup for the Tadcaster club.

Tadcaster Albion’s first involvement in the competition came with a home game in the preliminary round of the 1982/83 season. Lincoln United, who would go on to become the Division One South champions, won 5-2 at Ings Lane.

Their first victory in the League Cup arrived in the 1984/85 campaign, when Kiveton Park were beaten 3-0 in a first round tie.

A couple of years later, in the 1986/87 season, the Brewers reached the third round for the first time. Ossett Town visited Tadcaster in the first round and were beaten 3-2. In the second round, North Yorkshire neighbours Selby Town were defeated by the same score at Flaxley Road. Unfortunately, the Brewers received a tough draw away at Denaby United in the third round and the team who would finish sixth in the Premier Division won 3-0.

The Brewers suffered their joint heaviest loss in the second round of the 1994/95 campaign, when Ossett Albion won 5-0 at Tadcaster.

The third round was reached again in the 1998/99 season with victories at Hatfield Main (3-2) and against Pickering Town (1-0) but Premier Division Armthorpe Welfare brought the run to an end.

In the 2004/5 season, the Brewers drew 1-1 at home against Gedling Town before winning the replay 3-0. Tadcaster were subsequently removed from the competition and the Notting-hamshire club were reinstated.

In Tadcaster’s final season in the NCEL’s Division One - 2009/10 - they reached the fourth round by beating both Rossington Main and Long Eaton United 2-1. Armthorpe Welfare, who finished the season in third place in the Premier Division, came to Tadcaster in the fourth round and won 5-1 to give the Brewers a taste of the challenge to come in the higher tier.

Three years later, Nostell Miners Welfare were the 1-0 victors in

a quarter final tie, after Tadcaster had knocked out Brighouse Town (2-0) and Winterton Rangers (4-1) in earlier rounds.

Last season, the Brewers enjoyed a comfortable journey through the early rounds but met their bogey-side Cleethorpes Town in the semi final. Knaresborough Town were defeated 2-0 at the i2i Stadium in the second round before 6-1 and 4-1 away wins against Retford United and Lincoln Moorlands Railway, respectively. In the semi final, watched by 305 fans at the i2i Stadium, the visitors from Lincolnshire raced into a 4-0 lead at half-time and a late Josh Greening goal was merely a consolation.

The Brewers have reached this season’s semi final with away victories in the previous three rounds. Parkgate were beaten 3-1 in the third round with goals from Connor Sellars, Adam Baker and Jonathan Greening. They scraped past Division One Grimsby Borough - 2-1 after extra time - in the fourth round when Nick Black and Adam Baker were on the scoresheet. In the fifth round, a team including several former Premier League players won 3-1 at Knaresborough Town, in front of a crowd of 251. All three goals were scored by Carl Stewart.

Prior to tonight’s semi final against Albion Sports, the Brewers have played 57 games in the NCEL’s League Cup - winning 23, drawing three and losing 31. Two of the draws resulted in replays being played and the other was decided on penalties - Hemsworth Miners Welfare winning 4-2 in the shootout of the first round tie in the 2008/9 season.

Carl Stewart’s third goal in this season’s fifth round tie at Knaresborough Town was Tadcaster’s 100th goal in the League Cup. The Brewers have conceded 126 goals in the 57 games.

Armthorpe Welfare have knocked Tadcaster out of the League Cup on four occasions - 3-0 in 1988/89, 5-0 in 1991/92, 2-0 in 1998/99 and, as mentioned earlier, in the promotion season of 2009/10.

The Brewers have defeated Knaresborough Town, Pickering Town and Parkgate (once as RES Parkgate) on two occasions.

So, will Tadcaster Albion reach next week’s NCEL League Cup final at Garforth and have the chance of completing a league and cup double?

Our U21s play in the West Riding County FA Floodlit League (Central). During the 2014/15 season, they also made it to the Semi Final of the West Riding Floodlit League Cup. The players, who are aged 16 and over, train between 1 and 10 hours a week and also compete in regular development friendlies. Many of these friendlies are against youth teams from local professional clubs such as Leeds United and York City – giving each of our players a unique insight into the UK’s football system. Our U21 coaches Mike Morton and Simon Collins not only have their FA Level 3 (UEFA B) qualification, but they also have experience of coaching with professional clubs such as Manchester City and Leeds United. For more information on our U21 set up, please email [email protected].

Our Under 19 team is a newly formed side, which has been set up to help local talented players develop and hopefully progress into the Under 21s and the Tadcaster Albion first team. Players are all aged 16 and over. Coach Rich Taylor has coached in the USA and has also had a spell at Leeds United.

For more information on our U19 set up, please email [email protected].
