Director's Message
For the past two months I’ve been surrounded by noise.
Noise coming from teens chatting their hellos as they enter
rehearsal. Noise soaring down the hallway as voices try to find
the right notes. Noise from tap shoes banging on the ceiling
above me as I try to direct a scene, from saws and hammers as
the set is put together, from fifty plus teenagers eating dinner in
a cramped green room. Noise of lines being run backstage and
from dressing rooms as actors get ready. There has been noise
circling, surrounding, and encompassing me for eight weeks,
and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
George Gershwin once said, “I frequently hear music in
the very heart of noise.” I couldn’t agree more. For the noise
that has echoed through NCCT is the noise of hard work and
dedication. It is noise of budding relationships forming and
lifelong friendships being built. It is noise of determination to get
the dance move correct or the note just right. It is a noise of
passion, of community, of belonging. In that noise, I too hear
music.
We live in a noisy world. We are being bombarded every
day with noise from the news, from our work, from our families,
from our friends. It is difficult to muddle through all of that and
not become disheartened or overwhelmed. Hopefully today you
can sit back, tune out the rest of the world, and listen instead to
the incredible noise these teenagers have created. I hope you
too can hear their inspiring music.
- Lanni Luce West
