CHAMPLAIN — This weekend, the NorthCountry Ski and Snowboard Club is helpingyou gear up and get ready for the slopes.

According to club advisor Charles Roush, the club gives students in grades 5-12 theopportunity to enjoy the snow.

“Our goal is to bring kids from the sur-rounding area and introduce them to out-door activities such as skiing and snow-boarding at the local resorts,” Roush ex-plained. “We’re so fortunate to have allthese resorts in our backyard, that it givesus an opportunity to get the kids out thereon the slopes at an affordable price.”

The club, which began in 1965, is set upthrough the Youth Commission of the townof Champlain and villages of Champlainand Rouses Point. It also brings in North-eastern Clinton Central School studentsfrom Mooers.

Six years ago, the club’s advisors, Pamand Joe Damour, began a ski fair, which will

be held this year at NCCS Saturday, Nov. 6,beginning at 12 p.m.

“What we have are vendors from differ-ent ski resort,” Roush explained. “You’llhave representatives from Titus Mountain,Whiteface, Jay Peak, and Smuggler ’s Notchthere.”

Roush explained many of the popular skiresorts offer various giveaways, includingseason passes.

The other part of the ski fair is a swapshop, which allows people to bring in oldequipment to try to sell, with 10 percent ofthe proceeds benefiting the club for trans-portation fees.

“Anyone that has older equipment that’sstill deemed usable on the slopes, it givesthem an opportunity to try and sell theirstuff at the ski fair,” Roush said.

The actual fair is from 1-3:30 p.m., but

from 12-1 p.m. those wishing to sell itemscan bring them in to have them evaluated.

“If someone wants to try to figure outwhat value they should try to sell it at, wecan do that for them,” Roush explained.

Another big draw for the ski fair is the raf-fling of a Burton snowboard.

“One of our chaperones used to work forBurton Snowboards,” said Roush. “She de-cided one day she would check with her em-ployer and see if they would be interestedin donating a snowboard to the ski club andthey’ve been doing it ever since.”

Tickets for the snowboard, which is val-ued at $1,000, are one for $5 or five for $20.They can be purchased Lakeside Coffee inRouses Point, or the day of the event.

For more information, contact Roush at297-3121.

Benefit to help house fire victims planned Nov. 14By Sarah L. [email protected]

BEEKMANTOWN — When RobbieMiller, and Carol and Abby Leggett lost alltheir belongings in a house fire Oct. 15,plans began to take shape to help them re-place some of what they lost.

The fire happened at the family’s rentedhome on Spellman Road in Beekmantownsome time around 3 p.m. Abby, who turned14 that day, was the one to find the fire.

“She came home from school, went intothe house and could smell smoke,” ex-plained Carol. “She called her dad and shecalled 9-1-1, got the dog and got out.”

Abby’s dog, Ebby, then ran back into thehouse and into Robbie and Carol’s bed-room, where the fire began.

“I think she might have been looking forthe rest of us or going to a safe place,” saidCarol.

Abby then ran back into the house, wasable to save Ebby and make it to safety. However, she did lose three rabbits andtwo Guinea pigs.

“Abby’s a 4-Her,” Carol explained. “Twoof the Guinea pigs she’s had every year thatshe’s been at the fair showing dairy cattle, they’ve been with her in the barn.”

“She was very upset about that,” sheadded. “At this point, she doesn’t like to talkabout it too much.”

Aside from a box of photos, the family was

unable to recover most of their possessions,

and did have renter ’s insurance to help re-

place some of their be-longings.

“We all lost all ourclothes, everything,”said Carol. “Everythingwe had in that house …and I think we had livedthere for I think 15years.”

Despite that, Carolconsiders Abby to be ahero.

“They couldn’t savethe house, but she madethe best attempt shecould. She did what shewas supposed to do,” sheexplained.

Within 24 hours afterlosing their home, theowners of the farm Rob-bie works for, Cha-LizFarms in West Chazy, offered the family ahome to live in on the farm. That kindness issomething Carol noticed from many com-munity members.

“[The school has] been very supportive,”Carol said, referring to Seton CatholicSchool where Abby is a freshman. “The out-pouring of family and friends has been un-believable. It leaves me speechless, it really

does.”One friend who is helping the family is

Heather Charland, whose son, JamesSayah, is a friend ofAbby from when sheattended Beekman-town Central School.

Charland ex-plained when sheheard about the fireher son suggestedthey do something tohelp the family. So,she got together withRobbie’s mother,Debbie Miller, and be-gan planning a bene-fit.

The event will takeplace at the RainbowWedding and Ban-quet Hall, 47 WoodsFalls Road, Altona,

Sunday, Nov. 14, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Therewill be music, as well as an all-you-can-eatspaghetti dinner, and raffles and a Chineseauction. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for chil-dren age 6 to 10, and free for those age 5 andyounger. They can be purchased at L & MConvenience Store, Sandi’s Kountry Kitchen, and Dragoon’s Farm Equipment, in Mooers;Cindy’s Country Store in Mooers Forks;Giroux Bros. Equipment in Plattsburgh; or bycalling Charland at 335-2338.

There are a number ofuseful and com-pletely free applica-

tions for Windows users thatoften appear on lists devotedto such things. In addition toa great price, the applicationsare also supported by Mi-crosoft. This week, we look atthree of them.

How and when tofertilize the gar-den can seem con-

fusing, but once you under-stand some soil basics know-ing how to care for your gar-den’s soil is pretty clear. Tostart, it is important to knowthere are an awful lot ofchemical reactions going onin the soil. These chemicalreaction are what makes nu-trients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, available for plants to use.

Since plants are using these nutrients upfrom the soil, we typically remove the plantsfrom our garden either to eat or to preventdisease spreading. Therefore, through gar-dening we are removing nutrients from thesoil and these nutrients must be replaced sonext year ’s plants can grow and be healthy.

There are two ways we typically add nu-trients back into the soil. One is throughman-made chemical fertilizers and the oth-er is through organic material and fertiliz-ers. Both provide nutrients to plants, butthey behave in very different manners.

Chemical fertilizers are readily availableto the plants. All they need is a warm soiltemperature and some water for the plantsto be able to use the nutrients. The nutrientsin organic matter come from something thatonce was alive. Horse manure once was

grass. Blood meal comesfrom blood. For these nutri-ents to become available toplants, soil microorganismsmust break down the organ-ic matter. In addition to thesoil microorganisms, thistakes time, heat, and water.Nutrients from organic mat-ter are released over manymonths into the soil.

Because organic matter isslow to release its nutrients, fall is an ideal time to applythem to the garden. This can

be done by simply adding a layer of com-posted manure, shredded leaves, or com-post to the top of the garden. There is noneed to till in the soil. The soil creatures willdo that work for you. Besides nutrients, these organic materials also add water hold-ing capacity and structure.

Since chemical fertilizers are quick re-lease, fall is not the ideal time to add theseto the garden. By next growing season thesecould be washed away. If you want to addchemical fertilizer, be patient and wait un-til the spring.

As a practice, the op-portunity for enjoy-ing complete and

utter solitude is rapidly indanger of becoming a lost art.Possibly, it comes as a result ofthe difficulties involved in ob-taining its primary ingredient, the opportunity to be alone. Itis certainly understandable, aswild areas are getting moreuncommon amidst an ever en-croaching world.

A recent report from the Na-tional Park Service reveals thesounds of civilization can now be heard inmore than 30 percent of our nation’s wilder-ness areas. Despite our best efforts to escape,we can no longer hide from the jets overhead, nor the entrails they leave behind on the blanksky.

Even after darkness engulfs the planet, themysterious voids of the evening sky are notlonger immune, as satellites or space stationsintrude to leave a paw print on the blank, black blanket that once was the “Great Be-yond.”

Climbers atop Mt. Everest regularly usehand-held satellite phones to proclaimthey’ve made it; as do astronauts. It has be-come impossible to escape the din of civiliza-tion. As a society, we are heading toward atime when, according to the New York Times,“portable phones, pagers, and data transmis-

sion devices of every sort willkeep us terminally in touch.”

However, in a more impor-tant aspect, society has be-come almost terminally out oftouch. Our innate need forgenuine and constructivealoneness has been lost andforgotten and, in the process,so has a part of all of us.

Over the years, I’ve learnedthere are times when I don’tneed to be in touch or I justdon’t want to be. Althoughhumans are surely social ani-

mals, we also have a great need to spend timealone.

The scent of solitude provides us with theopportunity to enjoy the companionship ofthe only individual we will ever share ourlives with from the beginning to end — one-self.

With practice, solitude teaches us how todeal with this single companion, how to putup with them and to get the best out of them. However, without regular opportunities tospend time alone, we’ve become out of prac-tice.

For all of time, man has sought and foundsuch opportunities primarily in natural set-tings. Nature is where the earth whispers, yetin silence; it makes the loudest noise.

Solitude allows for sounds we can hear inour souls. It comes with a voice that visits dur-

ing quiet periods of personal conversation. Ithappens outdoors because natural surround-ings provide our best opportunities to be still, alone and quiet.

However, there is a great difference be-tween being alone and loneliness. Solitude isquiet time we make for ourselves, while lone-liness describes the pain of being alone. In na-ture, as we all know, we’re never alone.

Thoreau explained, “I find it wholesome tobe alone the greater part of the time. I love tobe alone. I never found the companion thatwas so companionable as solitude.”

It is interesting to note in many societiesthat emphasize close-knit family patterns, there are also built-in loopholes to offer an in-dividual an acceptable opportunity to escape,or a way to dissociate from society. Listedamong these loopholes are such activities asmarathon running, trance dancing, visionquests and hunting.

In fact, it was while spending time alone inhunting camp I began writing this article. Al-though my camp is not located beyond theclatter of civilization, the roar of a nearbystream and the wind whistling in the pinesmake it seem as if it is.

There is a major difference between beingalone and being lonely. Loneliness occurswhen you are all alone and you come to real-ize you don’t really know your only compan-ion very well.

I recall the story of the Adirondacks’ mostfamous hermit, Noah John Rondeau. Begin-

ning in 1914, he lived for more than 30 yearsin the wilds of the Cold River Valley, huddledin a small cabin located nearly 25 miles fromthe nearest gathering of civilization. He wasthe self-proclaimed “Mayor of Cold RiverCity” — population of one.

Rondeau was an unusual hermit. He actu-ally enjoyed people, but claimed he enjoyedthe woods even more. He earned a nicknameas the “Tin Can Hermit” for his habit of hit-ting up hikers traveling along the Northville-Placid Trail for a few cans of grub, which hestored in the nearby Cold River. He came totown to trade furs for staples and often stayedover with a handful of local families.

Between 1946 and 1947, Rondeau spent theentire year in the woods. He maintained avery detailed journal, since he spent most ofthe time alone. One of his finest journal en-tries was in respect to solitude. As an avid, practitioner of the art, I’ve always enjoyed hisentry for March 13.

“3/13/47: I have been at Cold River City forover a full year, much of the time alone withmyself. I find that I am very good company!”

I hope you, too, can take a lone walk in theautumn woods, and enjoy the company.

PLATTSBURGH — Anne Bailey has beennamed the recipient of this year ’s Lillian B.Redcay Award.

The award was presented to Bailey dur-ing a reception at CVPH Medical CenterNov. 1. Bailey was recognized by the Clin-ton County Community Services Board forher more than 20 years of volunteer work inmental hygiene services.

During the reception, Bailey was creditedfor being “a valuable resource” during theformation of the Alliance for Mental Illness, which is today known as the National Al-liance on Mental Illness of Champlain Val-ley.

The world of mental illness hit particular-ly close to Bailey and her husband, Jim, in1995 when their son, David, committed sui-cide after a long battle with mental healthchallenges. Bailey was credited with takinga very personal tragedy and turning it intoa “courageous, compassionate and commit-ted attempt to assist all those affected bymental illness,” according to a letter of nom-ination for Bailey to receive the RedcayAward.

Steve St. Onge, chairman of the CCCSB

who presented the award to Bailey, said herstory is one that is “very moving.”

“You’re a role model for all of us,” he said.Sherrie Gillette, director of Clinton Coun-

ty Community Mental Health Services, whohelped present the award to Bailey, agreed.

“Anne was one of the very first people Imet when I came to Clinton County fiveyears ago,” said Gillette, “and it was clearto me then that this woman is a strong ad-vocate for [mental health] services.”

Bailey was humbled by the words ofpraise but managed to share her thoughtswith those in attendance.

“I am very, very honored because it’squite amazing to be in the company of thosewho have received the award in the past,”said Bailey.

“I’m very proud of her. She works sohard and is on the phone so much,” said JimBailey. “It’s well-deserved.”

The Lillian B. Redcay Award is given tothose who have made “outstanding contri-butions to community mental hygiene serv-ices by a volunteer.” The award is given inmemory of Lillian Redcay, a local collegeprofessor who had “deep convictions aboutthe local mental health movement, familylive and public service.”

“I was really excited. I reallyliked [the award],” said Christo-pher, who was humble in talkingabout the honor.

Christopher ’s mother, Amy Go-heens, said her son was shy aboutreceiving the recognition, butthankful.

“He knew he was getting it, buthe didn’t know exactly what it wasfor,” said Amy. “Once he warmedup to the people, he talked to them

a lot, and was very proud.”The award was issued to

Christopher for his “remarkabledisplay of outstanding courageand valor while maintaining a bat-tle against his illness. He hasdemonstrated that wars are not

PLATTSBURGH — It’s the time of year thatJody A. Parks looks forward to every year —the annual Taste of the North Country.

Parks, who serves as executive vice presi-dent for the Plattsburgh-North Country Cham-ber of Commerce — the organization whichputs on the event — said there’s much in storefor this year ’s Taste of the North Country, nowin its 15th year.

“We’ve really got a lot going on this year,”said Parks. “We have quite a few new partici-pants, which I think speaks for the event.”

Taste of the North Country centers arounddisplays and samples from local restaurantsand vendors, which continues to grow year af-ter year, said Parks.

“The tasting is an opportunity to see what lo-cal restaurants and vendors have to offer,” she

said. “And, these vendors and restaurants goall out. They do a really good job that night.”

This year ’s participating businesses includeA & W, Adirondack Coffee Roasters, Agri-Mark/ McCadam Cheese, Anthony’s Restaurant andBistro, Dame’s Disc. Liquor and Wine Special-ty Shop, DeLish by Irises, Dunkin Donuts,ELFS Farm Winery and Cidermill, Geoffrey’sPub and Restaurant, The Ground Round Grilland Bar, Irises Cafe and Wine Bar, Karma Indi-an Cuisine, Kentucky Fried Chicken, L & MDiscount Liquor and Wine, Lake Placid Puband Brewery, Liquor and Wine Warehouse,Michele’s Fine Dining, Moe’s Southwest Grill,My Cup of Tea, Ninety Nine Restaurant, Pan-era Bread, Rambach’s International Bakery,Rulf ’s Orchard, Sam’s Club, Smooth Moves,The Station Cafe and Gifts, Vesco Ridge Vine-yards, and Wal-Mart SuperCenter.

Even though it’s called Taste of the NorthCountry, the event is about more than just food.

It actually gives attendees a taste of the manyitems available at local businesses through itsannual auction.

“We have some cool things this year as al-ways,” said Parks. “We have everything fromgift certificates to restaurants to toys for chil-dren to gift baskets to vacations to boat rentals.Everything you can possibly imagine.”

Among the big-ticket items this year, is oneof Schonbek Worldwide Lighting’s highly-sought after crystal chandeliers, valued at$1,100. Perrywinkle’s Fine Jewelry is also con-tributing a 14 karat gold amethyst briolettependant this year, valued at $500.

“Grace Realty is even donating the use of acondo in Florida,” said Parks, referring to aone-week stay at the Barefoot Beach Resort inIndian Shores, Fla. “That’s something wehaven’t had before.”

However, Parks noted people shouldn’t beintimidated by the value of some of the high-end items. Many items are valued in the $20range, but even big-ticket ones can go for asteal.

“That’s why it’s a good place to get your hol-iday shopping started,” said Parks. “There re-ally is something for everyone. “

Money raised from Taste of the North Coun-try helps the chamber of commerce with itscontinued efforts of promoting and marketingthe region, said Parks, which is another reasonto attend the event.

“It helps us with our continued promotion ofeconomic development and small business

support,” she said. “We can’t do that withoutevents like Taste of the North County to helpraise money.”

PLATTSBURGH — Photograph-er Shaun Heffernan and his wifedrawer Amanda Palmer will fea-ture their work at Tip Top Framesnext Sunday, Nov. 14.

Heffernan and Palmer used toown a gallery on City Hall Place, but closed it down last year. Thisexhibit will be the first time sincethen Palmer has showcased herdrawings.

“I have an art degree in printmaking and have been drawingsince I can remember really,” saidPalmer, who is also the directorand curator of the Alice T. MinerMuseum in Chazy. “I like to por-

tray the natural world, but I alsodo a lot of imagery from my imag-ination and dreams.”

Palmer said Heffernan will notonly showcase some of his photo-graphs, but will also be signingcopies of the 2011 Self RealizationFellowship calendar he will be fea-tured in.

“He’s wanted to get into it foryears,” Palmer explained of thecalendar. “It’s one that we used tosell at our store and he’s bought ifevery year for many years becauseit’s just amazing photographs init.”

Heffernan, who has been “cap-turing imagery” since 1969, sent indozens of photographs, and theorganization chose his Bleeding

Hearts photograph, which will befeatured in the 52-week calendar.

“I was completely elated,” Hef-fernan said. “It had been a goal ofmine to submit imagery to thesefolks for consideration for severalyears and I finally carved out thetime to do it.”

Heffernan said only 54 imagesare selected from more than 3.5million submissions.

“I really view it as an honor andam humbled to be included,” hesaid. “There’s definitely some luckinvolved when there are that manyphotos for the editors to choosefrom, and I’ll happily accept thatluck.

Heffernan’s photo, which hetook in 2007 at Point au Roche, will

be paired with a quote by GuruParamahansa Yogananda whichstates, “Love is harmony and har-mony is love … Love is the high-est, the grandest, the most inspir-ing, the most sublime principle increation.”

The idea of for the exhibit andcalendar signing came after a con-versation amongst Heffernan andTip Top Frames Gallery and ArtCenter owner Skip Sprague andTea & Treasures owner Judith Ben-tham-Beckley.

“We wanted to partner withthem first of all so we could spenda little time with them and also tobring people into their gallery,”Palmer explained. “They’re suchwonderful people and they have

such a great supportive attitude

towards artists.”

Bentham-Beckley will be serv-

ing freshly-brewed tea and items

from her store at the event. Prints

of Palmer and Heffernan’s works

will be available and Sprague will

be available for people who want

to have them professionally

framed.

The gallery will be available for

viewing at Tip Top Frames

through the holidays.

“So if people can’t make it on

Sunday, then they should definite-

ly go by and check it out,” Palmer

said.

PERU — The Champlain Valley Businessand Professional Women’s Club has named itshonorees for Employer of the Year and Busi-ness Woman of the Year.

Eyecare for the Adirondacks and TheresaGuynup were given the recognition, respec-tively, during a ceremony at Cricket’s Restau-rant Oct. 26.

Eyecare for the Adirondacks — with officesin Plattsburgh, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake andMalone — was nominated by Betsy Morrow,Morrisonville, who is a business teacher atCV-Tec.

In her nomination, Morrow stated she hasobserved the growth of Eyecare for theAdirondacks facilities and staff “for years”and credited the business for promoting em-ployees from within, several of which beingMorrow’s former students.

“They have always been very supportive ofmy student interns and have hired many ofthem,” said Morrow. “They regularly cross-train their employees to learn all of the phas-es of the eye care industry.”

Morrow further stated the team at Eyecarefor the Adirondacks is regularly involved inthe community, including Dr. Kjell Dahlen.

“Dr. Dahlen has been very involved withthe Mayor ’s Cup sailing regatta as well as anauction for charity that the staff and patientsdo every fall,” said Morrow.

Eyecare for the Adirondacks is a business

Morrow believes will be here “for the longhaul.”

The number of providers has at least tripledsince I have been placing students there,” saidMorrow. “With all of this growth, their em-ployees have grown professionally with them... I am not sure why Eyecare for the Adiron-dacks has not been recognized before, butthey seem to be overdue.”

Faye Martineau, administrator of Eye Carefor the Adirondacks, accepted the award onbehalf of the business, sharing she thought thetiming was coincidental with a recent predic-tion she was given.

“I was at lunch last Wednesday and hap-pened to read my horoscope which stated thatgood things will happen in your businessworld today,” she recalled. “When I get backfrom lunch, I had a phone call from Betsy Mor-row informing me [Eye Care for the Adiron-dacks] had won this award.”

Martineau said she and her fellow employ-ees are proud of the success stories they’vehad over the years with patients, whom theyplace as their “top priority.”

“We would be nothing without the commu-nity which supports us,” she said.

Theresa Guynup was equally as gratefulupon receiving her recognition as BusinessWoman of the Year. Guynup, who serves as aservice coordinator supervisor for ResidentialResources in Peru, was nominated by her fel-low employees for exceeding expectations ofher in her day-to-day job performance.

“Mrs. Guynup has dedicated her profes-

sional social work life to helping others inneed,” Molly A.K. Farrington wrote in hernomination of Guynup. “She has earned areputation of helping others in our communi-ty working at CVPH, UCPA of North Country, and currently Residential Resources ... In ad-dition to her duties at work, Mrs. Guynup hastaken an active role in the community partic-ipating in various activities and events thatagain benefit others.”

“[Guynup] is a passionate woman with aclear opinion,” Residential Resources presi-dent Kenda J. Howell wrote in her nomina-tion. “Her unwavering advocacy on behalf ofthe people she supports is truly admirable.”

The words written about her left her feel-ing overwhelmed, said Guynup.

“It’s wonderful to know that people you

work for and the people that are working foryou are so supportive,” she said.

Guynup credited her strong work ethic toher mother, 95-year-old Claudette Schofieldof Peru, who was unable to attend the awardpresentation.

“She was a working woman herself, serv-ing as a nurse in the Army during World WarII,” said Guynup. “She had a very strong, longcareer. She was my role model and my hero. She taught me what it is to be a working wifeand mother.”

When it comes to being a success in her owncareer, Guynup said it was due to a combina-tion of a supportive work environment andhome environment.

“I’m really blessed that I have both,” saidGuynup.

Eyecare for the Adirondacks,Theresa Guynup honored

Theresa Guynup, holding award, was named Business Woman of the Year by the Champlain Valley Businessand Professional Women’s Club. Also honored was Eyecare for the Adirondacks, which received recognitionas Employer of the Year.

Proudly They Served In the daily rush, it’s easy to lose track of what is truly important, extraordinary and

even heroic. Veterans Day is more than a day off work – it is a day to remember. From the Revolutionary War to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, our nation has

survived and thrived, thanks to our veterans. Remember America’s veterans – their service and dedication, their lives, their memories and our history.

PLATTSBURGH — There's a new airline service coming to Platts-burgh International Airport.

Spirit Airlines was announced as the newest service for the airportduring a press conference Oct. 28. Spirit Airlines will begin nonstopservice from Plattsburgh to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., beginning Friday,Jan. 14, 2011. Nonstop service to Myrtle Beach, S.C., is expected to be-gin Sunday, May 15.

Garry F. Douglas, president of the Plattsburgh-North CountryChamber of Commerce, said Spirit Airlines was attracted to the grow-ing number of people flying in and out of Plattsburgh International, which is expected to reach 85,000 to 90,000 people this year. Approx-imately 85 percent of those flying from Plattsburgh are from Canada.

"Those are the numbers that are bringing us the services we haveand the services we will have in the future," said Douglas.

Clinton County Legislator Robert J. Heins, chairman of the ClintonCounty Legislature's airport committee, said given the airport was re-developed from former U.S. Air Force properties nearly three yearsago, the transformation in such a short time has been impressive.

"That’s truly an amazing scenario in just three years," said Heins."We’re spiraling upward. It’s truly exciting."

The decision to bring air service to Plattsburgh was one that hasbeen in the works for the past two years, said Bobby Schroeter, sen-ior director of consumer market for Spirit Airlines. Schroeter con-firmed it was the high demand for vacation destinations like the Do-minican Republic, Cancun, and Jamaica — which Plattsburgh's Spir-it Airlines flights will connect to — that demonstrated the need here,he said.

"We looked at a lot of different things, but everybody here has beenclamoring for the Caribbean and low fares. It made sense for us," said

Schroeter. "We’re really excited to get [service] going here ... and getsome low-cost fares to everybody in the area. I know there’s going tobe a lot of demand for this."

"This finally puts the 'International' in Plattsburgh InternationalAirport," said Douglas. "And, it’s still just the beginning of the pos-sibilities that will unfold here at Plattsburgh International Airport."

Spirit Airlines service will begin with four nonstop flights to FortLauderdale in January and increase with four more nonstop flights toMyrtle Beach in May. Information about Spirit Airlines may be foundon-line at www.spiritair.com or www.flyplattsburgh.com.

tos of their products, describe them, set their ownprice, tell how many are available,” explainedSpaugh. “The market is open on-line for two daysfor people to put in their orders and is closed be-fore the physical market opens.”

The idea behind integrating on-line orderinginto the indoor market, said Spaugh, is to reducewaste.

“That way, if a vendor is baking, they know justhow much to bake and not baking things thatwon’t sell,” said Spaugh. “If I’m harvesting saladmix, I know just how much to harvest and I’m notharvesting more than I need one week and nothaving enough the next week.”

“It’s wonderful, from a business managementstandpoint,” she added.

Even though the market is designed in a madeto order fashion, Spaugh said there will likely stillbe goods available for those who haven’t orderedin advance.

“The first two weeks, we’ll have it set up like aregular farmers market, so that people can touchand feel and see and taste. And, some of our ven-dors will still do that on a regular basis,” saidSpaugh. “Some of them feel they generate sales ifpeople can sample their products.”

The benefits aren’t only for the producers andvendors, said Spaugh. Consumers will also bene-fit from the ease of on-line ordering and in know-ing they’re receiving locally-produced items thatare literally hand-picked for them.

“The person who does the primary groceryshopping can sit at home and look at the list andmake their decisions about what they want to or-der and then if someone else in the household ora neighbor is more convenient to the Oval, thatperson can just take the payment and pick up theirorder,” said Spaugh, who noted that would be ofadded convenience for people who travel fromfarther locations like Au Sable Forks and Jay to thesouth and Chazy and Chateaugay to the north.

“And, with having it on a Thursday, if you for-get something or you find you need somethingelse, you still have Friday to get it,” noted Spaugh.

The whole business model for on-line orderingisn’t something Spaugh is unfamiliar with, shesaid. Last year, she tested the waters using herbusiness and found on-line ordering was conven-ient for many people.

“We had 10-12 orders a week,” said Spaugh.“People were enthusiastic.”

Sam Hendren, owner of Clover Mead Farm inChesterfield, said he’s looking forward to partic-ipating in the market, which already has severalvendors lined up from northern Essex County toFranklin County and places in between.

In the absence of a local year-round farmersmarket, Hendren said he’s been traveling morethan 100 miles south — one way — to sell hischeeses and other goods at the Troy WaterfrontFarmers Market.

“In the winter, I drive two and a half hours oneway because there are no options up here besidesmy wholesale accounts, which aren’t enough,” ad-mitted Hendren. “Downstate, a lot of the summermarkets have gone to year-round. It’s somethingthat we have to move to up here also if we’re go-ing to expect small farmers like us to be able tosurvive.”

“I think we have to develop winter markets andthis is an interest attempt to do that,” he added.

The Thursday market Spaugh is establishingcould be a stepping stone to that, however, thatultimately depends on the reception it receives, she said.

“Right now, the market is just planned for thefall,” said Spaugh.

The indoor farmers market will begin Nov. 18and run Thursdays through Dec. 23. The excep-tion will be the week of Thanksgiving, when themarket will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 24. On-line orders may be placed at www.plattsburgh.lo-callygrown.net.

The market is still taking additional vendors, said Spaugh, particularly bread makers and meatvendors. Those interested in participating maycontact Spaugh at 643-7822.
