Call Center capabilities
Small businesses require an affordable, flexible phone system
platform thatprovides no-compromise call process-ing features and
functionality whileminimizing the day-to-day operationand
maintenance hassles associatedwith conventional telephone
systems.
The 3Com® NBX® 25 communicationssystem delivers exactly that.
With theNBX 25 system, small companies canhave access to
feature-rich callprocessing, toll-quality voice commu-nications,
and all the productivity-enhancing benefits of an EthernetLAN—in a
single converged network.By combining voice and data on asingle
network infrastructure, theNBX 25 system eliminates the cost
ofinstalling two separate systems—onefor voice and one for data.
This offersgreater scalability, simplifies adminis-tration, and
significantly reduces
overall cost of ownership. An organi-zation can grow from one to
25 nodes(lines and stations) with up to 12 cen-tral office (CO)
lines—withoutwholesale system replacements.
The NBX 25 system does morethan simply eliminate
duplicatecabling. It allows companies that donot have a LAN to reap
all thebenefits of networking, includingfile sharing, e-mail, print
sharing, and shared Internet access* on acompanywide basis.
Adding a new user is as simpleas plugging in an NBX
businesstelephone and making a few menuchoices. Deleting users is
equallyeasy. Because the NBX businesstelephone is an intelligent
LANdevice that retains its identity, even ifit’s unplugged and
moved, it will

Simple, SystemwideManagement and Control
The NBX NetSet™ administrationutility delivers a true
breakthrough—simple, systemwide management. With the NetSet utility,
anyone withminimum training can performroutine administrative
functions via astandard Web browser, such asNetscape Navigator or
MicrosoftInternet Explorer. From a single inputscreen,
administrators can set up auser’s extension number,
toll-callrestrictions, voice mailbox, featurebuttons, and CDR
tracking. TheNetSet utility also enables administra-tors to do the
following:
• Create and change up to 100systemwide speed dials
• Add or modify call coverage pointsand call routing paths
• Add or modify call forwardingservices to ensure that all calls
areanswered promptly
• Change system parameter settings
• Perform troubleshooting
• Program the voice mail andautomated attendant system

Toll Restrictions
Uncontrolled telephone usage can be amajor expense for any
business. TheNBX 25 system solves this problem byproviding a
programmable dial planthat enables organizations to restrictaccess
from certain phones or duringcertain hours of the day. The dial
plancan also help small businesses savemoney by automatically
routing out-bound calls to discount long-distanceservices, such as
10-10-XXX.
Call Detail Reporting (CDR)
In addition to the dial plan, the NBX 25 system controls costs
byletting small-business owners trackusage by user via the NBX
CallReports CDR application. This canhelp minimize unauthorized
long-distance calling.

Time of Day Service Modes
Organizations can program their NBX 25 system to respond
differentlyat up to four times a day. Each ofthese customer-defined
servicemodes—such as Open, Closed, Lunch, and Other—can be linked to
specifichours of operation. Each service modecan have its own
automated atten-dant, giving small businesses theflexibility to
define how they wanttheir calls to be answered and routed.
Easy Operation for Users
The NBX 25 communications system is extremely easy to
use.Preprogrammed buttons make it simple to conference, transfer,
redial, and hold calls. One touch providesinstant access to voice
messagingservices, speed dial, and forwardto voice mail. These
capabilities arecomplemented by a two-line alphanu-meric LCD
display that providespowerful features, including Caller IDsupport.
Users can call other in-houseusers by scrolling through an
internaldirectory on the LCD display andpressing a soft key to
initiate the call. Each NBX business telephoneincludes a built-in
speakerphonewith hands-free answer service.
User Programmingand Access
With the NetSet administrationutility, users can modify
telephonesettings to their individual require-ments from their Web
browser,including the following:
• Assign and change one-touch speeddials and print telephone
buttonlabels
• Create and change up to 100personal speed dials
• Manage off-site message notificationservices
• Modify call coverage destinations
Users also have access to the following:
• View the internal directory to findtelephone extensions of
other users
• View the members of hunt groupsand calling groups to which
theybelong
• Access user manuals online
Flexible User Connectivity
In addition to the NBX businesstelephone, the NBX 25
systemsupports standard 2500 series-compatible analog devices, such
asspeakerphones, fax machines, andcordless phones. Customers can
easilyconnect these and other analog devicesto the NBX 25 system
via optionalstand-alone NBX analog adapters orthe NBX 4-port analog
terminal card.
Comprehensive Call Routingand Management
For continued success and customersatisfaction, organizations
need timelyand efficient management of inboundcalls. The NBX 25
system’s AdvancedPowerMail eXchange™ (APX) voicemessaging system
supports thesecritical needs with an array of callrouting and
management features.
Multiple and MultilevelAutomated Attendant
The NBX 25 system includes four auto-mated attendant ports and
four hoursof voice mail storage. Automated atten-dant lets incoming
callers routethemselves quickly and accurately tothe individual or
department theywant to reach. Callers can choose todial by
extension, name, or depart-ment. To provide the appropriateresponse
at all hours, administratorscan generate a set of customized
greet-ings and activate the appropriate onebased on the time of
day.

The NBX® 25communications system is extremelyeasy to use.
-
NBX ® 25 COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM
Because the automated attendantmodule can answer four calls
simulta-neously, small businesses can respondeffectively to
fluctuating call volumeswithout adding additional staff. Themodule
also supports both multipleand multilevel automated
attendantoperations, enabling users anddepartments to set up
customizedincoming call greeting and routing tosuit their unique
needs. Featuresinclude the following:
• Up to 5 customizable automatedattendants per system
• Up to 20 levels of submenus perautomated attendant menu
• Up to 9 menu choices per automatedattendant menu
• Programming of automated atten-dant trees via the
NetSetadministration utility
• NetSet utility setup and testing toensure proper
configuration
User Message Control
APX voice messaging gives each userindividual control over how
calls andmessages are handled. Users can setup their own mailboxes
via first-timesetup help; create personal greetings;manage new and
old messages withoptions to save, delete, reply, and for-ward, as
well as mark messages asprivate and/or urgent. Users can
alsoaddress messages by name, extension,or distribution list for
fast and easymessage dissemination to coworkers.
Message Notification andRetrieval
The APX system alerts users to newmessages via an LED message
waitingbutton on the NBX telephone—whilethe phone’s built-in
display shows thenumber of new and saved messages.Users no longer
have to wonder howmany messages are waiting for them. With the NBX
25 system, retrievingmessages is as simple as pressing theMSG
button and entering a password.
Off-Site Notification andRetrieval
When users are off-site, APX voicemessaging can notify them of
newmessages via pager, telephone, or cel-lular phone. Users can
retrieve voicemessages easily from anywhere usinga touchtone
telephone.
Programmable Call CenterHunt Groups
The NBX 25 communications systemincludes support for up to five
linearor circular hunt groups or callinggroups for Call Center
applications, such as customer service, technicalsupport, and order
entry. With linearhunting, users are organized intogroups that
share a common groupextension. Inbound calls are alwayshandled in
the same manner, follow-ing a sequential, predefined (topdown)
order. In circular hunt groups, calls are handled dynamically,
deliv-ered automatically to the nextavailable member in the group;
thishelps ensure that no calls are missedand all users share the
call load. If nomember of the group is available, thesystem can
stack the callers in aqueue or provide alternate coverage.Hunt
group programming is pass-word-protected. All group calls
aretracked and can be reported using thebuilt-in CDR
application.
Calling Groups
Small businesses often have limitedadministrative staff and
expectemployees to help answer incomingcalls. With the 3Com NBX 25
system, companies like these can create call-ing groups to manage
call flow—evenif an automated attendant answers thetelephone. For
example, if callerswant to speak directly to a personinstead of
leaving a voice mail mes-sage, they can press “0” on theautomated
attendant menu. This cantrigger an alert to multiple individu-als
in the calling group to ensure that

switchesand hubs with the data network, itoperates independent of
computers, servers, and network operating sys-tems. This ensures
that the phonesystem continues to function evenduring a network
server failure.Because the NBX 25 system is anopen, standards-based
platform, itwill work with a customer’s existingdesktop computers,
