“I am excited about developing relationships within our College community that provide creative solutions and facilitate both improved professional learning for staff and improved learning outcomes for students.”

WelcomeW R I T T E N B Y S T A C E Y E X N E R

As a newcomer to the Northern Beaches region, I feel very privileged to have been successful in the position of Northern Beaches Secondary College Principal. I have been overwhelmed by the welcome I have received and look forward to forming strong and trusting working relationships within the school, community and region. I have already met many community leaders important to the NBSC Community, such as the Northern Beaches Learning Alliance, Gairingai Aboriginal Educational Consultative Group (AECG), Individual Parents and Citizens Association, universities, TAFE, Chamber of Commerce and the Communication and Engagement Directorate.

I am excited about developing relationships within our College community that provide creative solutions and facilitate both improved professional learning for staff and improved learning outcomes for students. I am eager to foster strong partnerships with our College campuses to build a community of practice to share and build knowledge.

Collective efficacious behaviours cannot be underestimated in schools. Creating a shared culture where all teachers believe

that together we can find and resolve any learning challenge. Where all members of our school believe in the professional worth of each member and also believe they have a significant role in building the worth of not only themselves but also each other.

We have commenced the year with over 300 parents attending our Duke of Edinburgh Information nights, our Design, Make, Innovate project culminating with over 600 students involved in the Expo last week. Our Jazz Improvisation program began with a strong enrolment and has already performed at our Yr 7 enrolment into high school parent information night. I was also privileged to attend the Sydney North Secondary Schools Sports Association “Blues awards” for 2018. 11 NBSC college students were awarded a blue and NBSC Mackellar Girls Campus was awarded school of the year for Sydney North, an outstanding result.

Please enjoy the newsletter as we celebrate the latest successes of students and staff across Northern Beaches Secondary College in Term 1, 2019.

As a newly appointed teacher, the opportunity to meet colleagues and learn together is important in providing a supportive, strong start in the profession. NBSC has established a support program for our teachers in their first year of teaching. A welcome afternoon, which included an introduction to Reflective Practice and the accreditation process, started the 2019 program.

Thanks to Laura Bowman who demonstrated initiative and set up Google Classroom. As a group, we are now able to share ideas and learning, resources and keep the communication going.

The Duke of Edinburgh International Award is a popular leadership, youth and personal development program for students at Northern Beaches Secondary College. In 2019 participation numbers across Bronze, Silver and Gold have jumped considerably from last year seeing most students complete the previous level and progress to the next. The ultimate goal for this diverse group of students is to finish year 12 with their Gold Award. Term 1 has been a buzz of activity with informative award meetings, selection of skill, service and physical recreation activities, and completing Practice Adventurous Journey hikes. The College is proud of the commitment and enthusiasm demonstrated by our students for their consistent positive contribution to our community and environment.

DESIGN//MAKE//INNOVATE 2019

Design//Make//Innovate is a design and technology challenge open to NBSC partner primary schools with NBSC Year 9 Mentors assisting primary students to rise to the challenge. Inspired by Caine’s Arcade, a short film about a 9 year old’s cardboard arcade of games whose dream was to have customers to enjoy it, students from Harbord Public School, Dee Why Public School and Manly Vale Public School set out designing and building their own arcade or board games. They received valuable assistance from Year 9 student mentors from NBSC Balgowlah Boys Campus, NBSC Cromer Campus and NBSC Mackellar Girls Campus. They employed the Design Thinking Process to develop their concept, create, test and modify their game until they produced a final product. Students also developed a portfolio of their progression through the challenge. All students were highly engaged in this process while also developing skills such as teamwork, problem solving, time management and communication.

Each school held their own Expo where students from other year groups were encouraged to try their games. They set up their own arcade and had customers, validating their learning process. The best games (including the design portfolio), as judged by their teachers were then showcased at the Finalist Expo. This was held at NBSC

Freshwater Senior Campus. Students displayed their work and were judged again to find the ‘Most Outstanding’ from each school. Parents and fellow students were also encouraged to judge the ‘People’s Choice’ for each school.

All the students put in a fabulous effort and produced some extremely creative games. Well done! Congratulations to the winning teams:

Thank you to all the Teacher Coordinators and Assistant Teachers for your dynamic leadership and fortitude during this project and to our student mentors for displaying excellent leadership throughout DMI.
