Fall 2012 Pee Wee Football - 3

Now in its action-filled 13th year, theNorthern Adirondack Football League iscarrying on a proud tradition of develop-ing athletic skills and sportsmanship inyouth ranging from third through sixthgrades.

Glens Falls youth footballhas tradition of success

The Glens Falls youth football program, backed for 16 years by the Glens FallsPolice Athletic League, has enjoyed aproud tradition with the backing of theGlens Falls Police Department and localbusinessman Bob Lefebvre.

In promoting the sport of football foryouth, the Glens Falls league has focusedtheir philosophy on the three Fs: fun foot-ball, family and fundamentals, accordingto long-time coach Bob Rizzo.

Ft. Edward: nurturing excellenceThe Fort Edward football program also

enjoys a proud, successful tradition. In 2008 — the year the Fort Edward pro-

gram joined the Northern AdirondackYouth Football League — the Junior Fortswon a championship with a 6-1 seasonrecord, while the senior team won theleague finished second at 6-1. The follow-ing year, this senior youth team won theleague championship, finishing the seasonat 7-0. In 2009, the Seniors repeated withan undefeated championship, and in 2010,the Juniors achieved the same feat.

In 2011, the Forts’ senior team earned aspot in the playoffs but lost to Whitehall. The Junior team, however, won the firstSuperbowl crown ever for their age levelin the league.

Forts’ senior-level head coach DavidRegner noted that the founding 2004 play-ers are now the leaders of the team at FortEdward High, a team that’s now dominat-ing headlines, racking up victories, andthrilling fans.

As of last week, the Senior NAYFL teamwas enjoying a solid 4-1 season, primarilydue to a tough offensive line, consisting offive players, four of them four-yearstarters. The Forts run five plays, but prac-tice them to perfection, Regner said.

This success was despite the formationof the new Hudson Falls team, which drewaway about 15 of the Forts’ former play-ers, as the Fort Edward team used to drawits athletes from the entire Fort EdwardSchool District, which includes areas ofHudson Falls.

Assisting Regner in his duties this yearis Eric Smatko. The juniors are mentoredby Head Coach Mike Sullivan, assisted byShawn Rivers.

Ticonderoga and WhitehallFarther north, Northern Adirondack

Youth Football League members Whitehalland Ticonderoga both have strong pro-grams with proud traditions.

Recognizing the critical role that youthleagues serve, citizens of both communi-ties have traditionally provided strongsupport for their youth teams, whether infundraising, game attendance, or parentsbacking up the coaches in their workinstilling admirable values in the players.

In Whitehall, junior squad coach RayLyman predicted this week that WhitehallHigh School’s 2020 football team will beregional champions, based on the per-formance of his third- and fourth-gradeteam this year.

This team of athletic youngsters were 5-0 as of Oct. 12, racking up victories withmargins as tilted as 41-0, he said.

Both the line and the secondary exhibitsstrong team play, he said, noting histeam’s success is likely because two-thirds of its athletes have played togetherfor years, beginning in flag football.

Besides Lyman, the Whitehall teams arecoached by Chad Monty, Jeremy Putorti, plus Jeremy and Richard Gould.

While the Northern Adirondack Leagueboard of directors voted to cancel playoffsand the Superbowl this year, Whitehall isconsidering their game with Ticonderogaas their playoff game, and their last game—against Fort Edward which is now 4-1 —as the unofficial League Superbowl,Lyman said.

Corinth — home of championsFor decades, Corinth has produced

strong, able football players that have thedetermination and athleticism one wouldexpect from a mill town.

The Corinth youth football programreflects this tradition, and it is celebratingits 17th season this year.

One of Corinth’s long-time coaches, DanLescault, co-founded the NorthernAdirondack Youth Football League in 2000along with Terry Bruno of Lake George.

In 2010, Corinth’s Senior team won theleague championship after amassing a 6-1record, and its Junior team was runner-upwith a 4-2-1 record.

The Senior team championships extendback to 2002 — when they had an 8-0record and 2008, when they earned a 7-0record. Also, the Seniors won the runner-up trophy in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

The Junior team was the undefeatedchampion in 2005, the Superbowl runner-up team in 2011, and League co-championin 2008.

Lake George football traditionFor over a generation, Lake George

High School has enjoyed a dominant foot-ball team — and many sports enthusiastsgive much of the credit to the local youthfootball program.

The Lake George Junior Squad hasenjoyed had yet another impressive year. The third- and fourth-grade team is men-tored by Head Coach Jay Salmon, assistedby John Clarke and Jay Robbins.

This year, the junior Warriors enjoyed alate-season winning streak, victorious infour consecutive games to amass a recordof 4-2. Clark and Salmon have coached thegroup of 19 boys for the last three years, which includes two years of flag football,Salmon said.

Salmon noted that over the last fourgames, his team only allowed an averageof 10.75 points to be scored against them.In those four games, the team’s offensescored 131 points, he said.

“These kids are a true team, providingfull support for each other, understandingthe roles of their positions and how itimpacts the plays called,” he said.

Burghers’ program is flourishingThe Warrensburg youth football league

was founded years after Lake George's.But it didn't take long for the program

—under the guidance of volunteer coachesincluding Scott Tenant, Rob Nelson, MikeTurner, Mike Irish, Al Perrone and manyothers — to nurture a tradition of dedica-tion to the game and to annually developdozens of enthusiastic youngsters intoskilled, promising athletes.

Coach Gary Baker notes that theWarrensburg youth football program hasgrown through the years, and now fieldsboth a junior and senior team of at least 60youngsters in three programs, includingflag football for kindergarten through sec-ond grade, and two other teams whichincludes athletes through sixth grade.

A key element to the growth of the pro-gram has been community support, whether it's the ongoing development of atown football field, the work of theWarrensburg Youth Football Booster Cluband the generosity of the public— that hasallowed purchase of new helmets, practiceequipment and uniforms.

Baker said that all parents and youthsports fans, whether in Warrensburg orthe other area communities, deservepraise for supporting a football leaguethat develops vital character traits inyouth: teamwork, dedication and highstandards of conduct — attributes thatwill serve them well throughout theirlives.
