Events of World War II to be commemorated
Over the next four years: 75th Anniversary of
the U.S. Navy Experiences in World War II
December 7, 2016 – 75th Anniversary of The Attack on Pearl Harbor the Start of WWII
Starting with the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 2016 through the anniversary of the Japanese surrender onboard USS Missouri on September 2, 2020. “World War II history has always been of intense interest to both our service and the country at large – and for a very good reason” said Naval History and Heritage Command Director Sam Cox. “It was a worldwide conflict with existential consequences that continue to unfold, and it affected every American.” America is a maritime nation whose security is tied to the sea and depends on a capable and credible U.S. Navy.

NYCP Nominating Committee Chair P/C Bill Clark The nominating committee requests the names of candidates for the 2020 Bridge team. With this request they urge each member to view serving on the Bridge as your personal contribution to the success of the club. Timetable:
• Candidates that have come forth will be presented at the October 3rd General Membership meeting.
• Nominations from the floor will be accepted at that time.
• Elections for 2020 will take place at the November 7th General Membership meeting and again nominations will be open briefly from the floor at the meeting.
• Installation of the 2020 Bridge team will take place at the Commodore's Ball on Wednesday, December 4th.
Membership participation is the key to the overall success of the club - after all - we are a total voluntary organization. Please give serving on the Bridge a top priority. Thank you.
NOVEMBER 2019
From the Helm: By the time you read this, we will have completed our Racing Schedule for 2019 on November 2nd with Commodores Cup #4/Pensacola Bay Championship #12 on Pensacola Bay. It has been a good year for our sailors, especially all the new members who both crewed with other members or entered their own boats into the competition. We hope you all enjoyed the experience and plan to enter even more events next year. First race for NYCP will be February 29th when we kick-off 2020 with Maxine #1/Commodores Cup #1. Thanks to all who make our racing work, including the indispensable Race Committee and those who provide the support ashore (food, beverages, awards, etc.) Please plan to join us on Thursday, November 7 for our last General Membership Meeting of the year. We have a special “Traditional Southern Thanksgiving” meal with smoked and baked turkey and trimmings, desserts, and a fun night with friends. We will be discussing our end-of-year awards nomination process, as well as all the details of the Commodores Ball on Wednesday, December 4th at the Hilton Garden Inn Airport/Medical Center starting at 1800. Invitations have been mailed. If you did not receive one, please contact me or Molly Werner. Please consider inviting friends who may be interested in joining NYCP to see what all the shouting is about. We WILL have a great time, trust me! One other exciting piece of news (See Julie Connerley’s GYA Update) from October. Seven of us participated in the GYA (Gulf Yachting Association) Fish Class Championships at Buccaneer Yacht Club in Mobile, October 19-20. Navy had not competed on the water in 5-7 years so expectations were low. However, our sailors competed well enough to finish fifth out of six clubs. The sweet part is that we finished ahead of a very experience team from PYC who finished sixth. We plan to enter again next year and do even better. Thanks to our Fish Class sailors! Well done. One more time: Commodores Ball on December 4th (Wednesday). The Ball will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn-Airport/Medical Center. We hope you will reserve the date and plan to attend. The banquet food will be extra special and their Ballroom will be
decorated for the holidays and provide a perfect, intimate setting for our celebration. Cost will be same as previous years. A special room rate for the night is available, also. Take care, enjoy life and get out on the water. We live in the most beautiful place in the world to enjoy the water, 12 months a year! Fair Winds and Following Seas - until we see you again.

[email protected] (850) 485-5533 During the Month of November – Place a
Ravioli, derived from an old Italian word riavvolgere ("to wrap"), was first mentioned in the personal letters of a 14th century merchant in Venus, Italy. It was not until the 16th century that tomato based sauces were used. Closer to home, it was Chef Boyardee who canned the "fresh" packed ravioli in the 1930's, making this traditional dish an American mainstay. In fact, pasta lovers celebrate National Ravioli Day every March 20. Various twists on the original recipe, including this month's Alfredo Cheese Ravioli, compliments of Sandy Pyle, continue to delight the palettes of foodies everywhere. NYCP members who graciously supply the food dishes at our monthly meetings aren't just good chefs, they are valuable participants in the sustainability of our small yacht club and we appreciate each one for their contributions.
Alfredo Sauce 1-quart heavy whipping cream 2 cups 1/2 and 1/2 Large Parmesan Cheese Mozzarella shredded cheese 2 sticks of Butter 3 cloves of Garlic 3-4 teaspoons of Italian Seasonings Salt and pepper to taste Press garlic and brown in part of your butter with Italian Seasoning Add heavy whipping cream to low heat Add remaining butter Slowly add cheese while sauce thickens Use 1/2 and 1/2 to make sauce your favorite thickness
Pasta You can use frozen cheese ravioli, any brand, and prepare as instructed on packaging
Process Mix drained pasta to hot sauce and stir. Remove from heat and let sit about 30 minutes Place in casserole and add mozzarella to cover top completely Bake 30 minutes on 350 degrees.
Bon appétit!

Navy Flying Scot Sailing
NYCP Flying Scot boat is back at the Navy Base. If you are interested in practicing with the racing crews or just would like to go for a sail let me know and I will work out a time with you and be happy to help with any instructions necessary for you to enjoy our club boat along with this beautiful place we call home. Interesting Note: The Navy Yacht Club sponsored 10 students and 2 chaperones from the University of Alabama Sailing Club onto the base for sailboat training on November 1st thru November 3rd. On Friday, November 1st the weather conditions were questionable with brisk winds and cool temperatures. Membership Director Molly Werner along with Vice Commodore Patrick Sargent and myself provided the students with our Crow’s Nest - a place to study indoors and I was able to launch the Flying Scot so the students had a chance to practice on the water. After the winds eased up a little bit in the afternoon (the students were here from 10AM to 3PM for training) Keith Raisch, Marina Manager was able to get two Hunter 18’s out on the water so the students had more opportunities to sail.
With the help of Dan Owczarczak and his boat Sea Breeze and Kim Kaminski and her boat Helldiver the students were able to get out on the water during our Commodore’s Cup Race #4 / Veterans Regatta / Bay Championship #12 race. Helldiver took 4 students to sail with their crew for the race and Sea Breeze took 3 students. 3 students went out on the Pin set Boat and Race Committee Boat Maxine to assist during the race (as well help transport Maxine to and from the regatta. On Sunday, weather and other Marina obligations prevented the students from sailing and so they headed back to the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama. The students had a grand time and we hope to see them come back for a visit in the future (hopefully in the Spring to continue their training). Watch for more photos in next month’s Foghorn.
Hello All, Navy Yacht Club was invited to race in the 20th Anniversary John G. Curren Fish Class Championship. (The Fish Class boat was the first one design boat used by the GYA for interclub races). Our team of Commodore Ken Pyle, Kim Kaminski, new member Olivia Baranowski, Tom “Oscar” Robinson, Pete Malani, Chris Cantillo and myself headed to Mobile Bay to compete. Tropical Storm Nestor had other plans and wanted to join the party but left the area early enough for the racing to be held. On Saturday, Kim skippered the first race with Ken as midship and Olivia on foredeck and the team took a 3rd place finish against Bill Culberson of the Buccaneer YC and David Bolyard from the Pontchartrain YC. For the second race Olivia was on the helm with Ken as midship and Kim on foredeck. After a battle at the windward mark the team sailed into a 5th place finish (Note: Navy Yacht Club had the only female skippers in the GYA Fish Class Championship). On Sunday, Tom “Oscar” Robinson skippered the 3rd race with Ens. Chris Cantillo and Pete Milani as crew. They finished in 6th place but they also competed again Donnie Breenan who makes the Fish Class boats, Tom Whitehurst who is a World Champion, Denny Blume who has competed in the Fish Class boat for several years…so give the team a hand for battling with the biggies! Way to go team…thanks for representing the Navy Yacht Club! NOTE: Buccaneer Yacht Club won the event which was a great honor especially since the boat is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year! Our next race and the final race of the year will be the Commodore’s Cup Race #4 / Veterans Regatta and it will also be the last race in the Bay Championship Race #12. Please plan to sail in our last race of the year!

Pensacola Bay Championship Series The hope and idea for the Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay and not just in your home club regattas. This idea was initiated in 2016 and the hope is to have this series continue for years to come - there will be 12 regattas in the series and only 8 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship…thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn’t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 3 offshore races* only in 2019. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship and would need to race in only 2 of the 3 to qualify. There’s definitely room for multihull divisions as well as PHRF racing and cruising and One-Design divisions, youth divisions, etc.

The commemorative centennial book, celebrating 100 years of the GYA and the Lipton Challenge is now at the publishing house! Initially slated to be 128 pages, the GYA's Centennial Committee authorized additional pages. "There is so much history in the 100 years of the GYA and the Lipton Challenge, and reading this history helps one understand the reasons behind our traditions," said Cathy Cromartie, Past GYA Commodore and book sub-committee chair. "As it stands now, the book will be 144 pages with the possibility of needing even more." A few books are still available at a cost of $50 per book and will be available for pick-up at the 2020 Opening Regatta, May 1-3, at St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club. If you haven't purchased a book, now is the time while there are still some available. Checks should be made payable to GYA-Lipton Centennial and mailed to: 506 Trace Crossing, Daphne AL 36526. For even more information, contact Cathy Cromartie at 251-895-0993. Closer to home---Navy Yacht Club was proudly represented at the 20th annual GYA Fish Class Championship held October 19-20 at Buccaneer Yacht Club in Mobile. Seven yacht clubs registered for this inter-club competition--Buccaneer, Fairhope, Pensacola, Pensacola Beach, Point, Pontchartrain, and our own NYCP. Two races were conducted Saturday and the final on Sunday. The regatta offered a continental breakfast and a ceremonial "blind selection" of the boats to be sailed for each race (no team sailed the same vessel twice). Navy's team on Saturday included Commodore Ken Pyle, Kim Kaminski and Olivia Baranowski. Our Commodore confessed, "My last true racing in a one design was at the Naval Academy as a freshman (Plebe) sailing Skipjacks two-handed in fall and spring, 1964-65. I had an exhilarating experience on the 19th, to say the least." He handled the main, Olivia worked the jib/foredeck, and Kim skippered the team to a third-place finish in race 1--our best score. Race 2 was skippered by Olivia; Ken worked the main and Kim handled the jib and foredeck when going down wind. Olivia and Kim were the only women skippers in the regatta! Sunday's race was skippered by Tom "Oscar" Robinson, with jib handled by Ensign Chris Cantillo, and Pete Malani worked the main. NYCP's Fleet Captain, Lee Borthwick, was on hand as back-up crew. "Sunday's race was supposed to start at 10am but was postponed due to lack of wind," said
Borthwick. At noon it was decided to rig the boats and tow them out in hopes of wind arriving before 2:00pm or that race would be abandoned. "Luckily, around 1:00pm 8-10 knots wind from the Southeast provided sufficient racing conditions and the rest is history," he smiled. NCYP finished 5th overall--beating out the A-listers from Pensacola Yacht Club. Congratulations to our NYCP team! And finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of NYCP for electing me to serve one more year as your GYA Coordinator.

Hello Navy Yacht Club,
We used the Square for debit card charges for meal payments and bar donations at our membership meetings as well as ship store purchases with great success. Let me know if you have any questions regarding this type of payment. Please contact me at: [email protected] for any club related issues.
Please be sure to check the Navy Yacht Club website: www.navypnsyc.org for all of the yacht club news such as upcoming meetings, sign-up for activities or sailboat crew, information about the club and notice of races as well as other contact info. Also check out the photos from the Navy Yacht Club activities throughout the year. If you have a picture to submit …be sure to let us know. Have you taken any digital photos lately? Maybe you have some photos from a recent trip or photos of the kids or grandkids? Saved any important documents lately, like a 1099R, a birth certificate, or the warrantee for that new TV? Whether you download photos or any other files, you need to be sure you save them to your computer so you can print them, or just view them when you have the time. But, remember, computers do crash, and it may happen to you. When they do crash there goes all those important photos or documents. To ensure you don't lose any valuable files, make sure you back them up regularly to the cloud, or to an external hard drive. A one or a two Terra Byte hard drive can be purchased for fewer than one hundred dollars and set up to automatically back up your files on a regular basis. It is money well spent, especially if it saves those pictures and documents that are so important to you.

Viva Florida Fun Fact
As the Nation’s First settlement attempt, the Pensacola Bay Area plays a significant role in over 500 years of history that helped to create the State of Florida. In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola! Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts Viva Florida – Promoting Florida’s History and Culture The dedication of a new airfield at Pensacola Naval Air Station on Nov. 2, 1951, signaled a technological shift in the training of Naval aviators in the Cradle of Naval Aviation. Named after Adm. Forrest P. Sherman, who died suddenly the previous July while serving as Chief of Naval Operations, the field would welcome the first jet training aircraft, the buzzing of propeller planes familiar to Pensacolians, now complemented by thundering roars. Pensacola Fun Fact! It was a combat unique in Naval aviation history up until that time, the roar of radial engines filling the air as two aircraft twisted and turned in aerial combat replaced by a different sound. On Nov. 9, 1950, a Navy jet aircraft for the first time engaged an enemy jet in air-to-air combat. Flying an F9F Panther, Lt. Cmdr. William T. Amen shot down a MiG-15 in the skies over Korea.

Where in the W rld is the NYCP Burgee?
This is a variation of the “Where’s Waldo” drawings that were popular several years ago. Basically, members of the club can submit pictures - to the Foghorn Editor or an NYCP board member - which have the Burgee or our license plate somewhere in the photograph. Pictures can be submitted at any time electronically or dropping them off at one of the club meetings Foghorn and selection of the pictures which are unique and of interest to the club members will be in the running for an award at the end of the year. Club members or their guests are eligible to participate.
Dear All ~Husband had wholeheartedly approved my plans to visit Argentina--though he had no desire to go himself--and with blessings of family and friends, I decided to honor my reservation. Attached is my contribution to Foghorn for our Where in the World is the NYCP Burgee collection.
Julie In October, I returned from a long-planned Argentina adventure with good friends. The itinerary's highlight (for me) was the visit to the city of Ushuaia, which is the
southernmost inhabited city in the world. Unfortunately, Argentina's reputation as the most politically unstable country in South America revealed itself in an unofficial airline strike which grounded every flight out of Buenos Aires. The country is heavily unionized and the national presidential election was being held at the end of October. Thus, that portion of our trip was nixed. Alternately, we found ourselves at a New York Broadway-worthy musical/historical production of the country's namesake dance, the Tango, and visited world famous San Telmo Market (think antiques/flea market touting musicians, Tango street dancers, surrounded by restaurants and stores.) We did fly to Patagonia to experience the world-famous icebergs and glaciers found there. And that is where we will find NYCP's burgee! Argentina, or the Argentine Republic as it is officially known, derives its name from the Latin word for silver, argentum. When the original Spanish conquerors met the indigenous people, they received silver objects as presents. The diverse landscape encompasses immense plains, deserts, tundra, and forests, as well as tall mountains, rivers, and thousands of miles of ocean shoreline. Argentina also claims a portion of Antarctica. This inverted triangle shaped country is the eighth largest country in the world but only 1/4 the size of the continental U.S. Geographically, the tallest mountain in the Americas is located there, and its Andes Mountains are the world’s second highest mountain range, behind only the Himalayas. Argentina's Rio de la Plata is 124 miles wide at its mouth, making it the widest river in the world. The Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia is the third largest reserve of freshwater in the world--and one of only three glaciers in Argentina that is growing, not shrinking. Both the oldest and largest dinosaurs were discovered in Argentina. Liverworts, the earliest plants to grow on land, have been discovered in Argentina. This simple rootless and stemless plant appeared as early as 472 million years ago. Some interesting facts: Since the 16th century it has ranked as one of the world's leading wine producers (with over 1800 wineries today) and is the third largest beef producer. Argentina was the first country to use fingerprinting to determine guilt in a crime (June 1892), Its movie/music culture is credited with creating the first animated film in 1917 which was 70 minutes long. In August 1920, it became one of the first countries in the world to have radio broadcasting. Argentines enjoy the highest rate of movie watching and it is the only Latin American country to receive an Oscar. There are no school busses in the country and students must buy their own books and uniforms. Respect for the dead is so widespread that the Argentines have been described as being “cadaver cultists.” In Buenos Aires' La Recoleta Cemetery, tomb space goes for as much as $70,000 US for a few square meters making this one of the most expensive plots of land in the world.
Cuban revolutionary leader, Ernesto “Che” Guevara was born in Rosario, Argentina. His photograph taken by Alberto Kordo has been named one of the most famous photographs in the world. Legendary American bandits Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid lived for a time on a ranch near the Andes in Patagonia. The Italian population in Argentina is the second largest in the world outside of Italy. The capital, Buenos Aires, boasts the world’s widest avenue (named 9 de Julio) which has 14 lanes, plus 4 lanes of parallel streets. Tango, the intense and sensuous Latin dance and music, sometimes described as "making love in a vertical position," originated in the 1880s Buenos Aires' slums and bars in its slaughterhouse district. Argentina is one of the founding members of the United Nations, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization. In 2001, during the year of the country’s worst financial and political crisis, Argentina had five presidents in just 10 days. Major political parties in Argentina produce their own craft beers and brand them with historic political icons. Due to rapid inflation, Argentina has dropped 13 zeroes off their currency since 1970, a factor of 10 trillion. For all its political woes, Argentina has one of the lowest crime rates in Latin America. And, with beautiful vistas, a distinct culture, and fabulous cuisine Argentina is a country worth visiting!
Situated in the Patagonian province of Santa Cruz, Argentina, Lake Argentina, in Los Glaciares National Park, is the country's largest freshwater lake with an average depth of 492 feet and a maximum of 1,640 feet. Tour vessels offer the best views of its numerous glaciers varying in color from pure white to sapphire blue. In 1981 the area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Southern Patagonian Ice Field covers 4,800 square miles and is made up of 48 glaciers. As one of the world's few glaciers in a state of balance--receding and growing at the same rate--the Perito Moreno Glacier covers 100 square miles and averages 250 feet in height. It ranks as the world's third largest reserve of fresh water. Visitors can stroll a boardwalk to enjoy Argentina's most famous glacier as it creeps forward up to two meters per day, resulting in thundering roars of cascading ice as it calves truck-sized icebergs into Canal de los Tempanos.

PENSACOLA TO HOST PREMIERE SAILING
LEAGUE EXHIBITION SERIES
Make an Early New Year Resolution to Be In Pensacola, Florida
If the trendsetters are right that September truly is the new January – as far revisiting those resolutions made at the beginning of the New Year – then why not make an early resolution now to be in Pensacola, Florida, in January of 2020. That is when the Premiere Sailing League USA (PSL) will debut stadium sailing on Pensacola Bay during the PSL Winter Exhibition Series between Jan. 3 and April 5.
The PSL Winter Exhibition Series will consist of a pre-series test regatta followed by four invitational regattas. Teams can charter a boat from the supplied fleet of identical RS21 keelboats for the racing which will take place on courses set just off the Pensacola waterfront at either Plaza de Luna or the nearby Vince Whibbs Community Maritime Park. Spectators can watch the teams compete in multiple exhibition stadium style races directly in front of the festive venues. Dates have been chosen to coordinate with other activities in the two parks to introduce stadium sailing to the non-sailing public. The first PSL Winter Exhibition is scheduled for January 3-5, 2020, off Plaza de Luna at the foot of historic South Palafox Place adjacent to the Pensacola Marina. Not coincidentally, the regatta takes place during the 12th Night Mardi Gras Kick-off celebration taking place throughout downtown Pensacola. Subsequent PSL Winter Exhibitions are currently planned for Jan. 31-Feb 2, March
6-8 and April 3-5, 2020. (Note final dates may be subject to change)
For each event, practice racing will be held on Friday from the Pensacola Yacht Club in the downtown Sanders Beach Community. Then on Saturday and Sunday the six to 12 teams will race short course, fast paced flights, with up to 20 races per day, to determine the winner. The racing will follow the format of the events that will be offered in 2022, the inaugural year of the full national season of the League. Spectators on shore will be treated to race analysis presented by sailing broadcaster and America’s Cup commentator Tucker Thompson, who will make stadium sailing come to life for spectators.
“We are excited by the City of Pensacola’s response to this event,” said PSL President Benjamin Klatzka. “Not only will Pensacola be the venue for the League’s 2020 Exhibition Series, the City and Pensacola Yacht Club will be the Southern headquarters for the PSL. The bay’s consistent breeze and flat water are ideal for inshore, stadium style racing, and off the water the area offers sailors and their families everything from great hotels, restaurants, beaches and shops making Pensacola both a great sailing and vacation destination.”
Mayor Grover Robinson, and Pensacola Yacht Club’s Board of Directors, have put their full support behind the PSL Winter Exhibition Series and future events on Pensacola Bay.
“Pensacola is rich in maritime history,” said Mayor Robinson. “We look forward to partnering with the Premier Sailing League USA and helping provide a platform where sailors from different backgrounds can compete in a stadium sailing competition encouraging new spectators and participants to enjoy the sport. As the league grows, we in Pensacola look forward to being the permanent southern base for the PSL.” Visit Pensacola President Steve Hayes and Pensacola Sports President and CEO Ray Palmer have been onboard with the Mayor and his staff since the concept was first
presented to the city and the Escambia County tourism professionals. The Pensacola/Escambia County tourism promotional arm at VisitPensacola.com, and the sports marketing team at Pensacola Sports, are committed to helping make the exhibition series, and all future events on Pensacola Bay, a success in every way. The Premiere Sailing League USA will debut its concept for an organized, national fleet racing league during the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Md., which runs from October 10-14, 2019. Details are available at
www.premieresailingleague.com.
