● used for invasion of Norway and Poland, fought losing Battle of Atlantic with US

● suffered huge losses early in war, including 3,000 when Lancastria, troopship, sunk

● sunk the Bismarck (big deal) and Scharnhorst of Germany

● weaker air fleet
