Commanders Message From The Helm Cdr Robert F. McCurdyVBPS is
here year-round Its that time of year when some of our members
begin their annual trek north for the summer. Others will remain
here. Speaking for those members who stay here year round, the
difference is enjoyable. Sure, we miss is our valuable friends who
leave us, but life goes on. Well just have to grin and bear the
less expensive and less crowded golf courses, the calm and warm
ocean, less noise, fewer cars, smaller waiting lines at our
favorite restaurants, etc, etc. Something that does not change,
however, is the fun we have as a group. Our Friday night socials
become smaller and more intimate in the summer. There are fewer
member classes. It is generally a little more relaxed atmosphere.
But looks can be deceiving. In the background, we have a lot going
on. We are doing vessel safety checks, public boating safety
classes, charity work, island cleanup, raft-ups and cruises, to
mention a few. New this year will be the USPS seminars, the
two-hour courses we will teach to the public and our own members.
This represents an exciting new way to meet new people and teach
boating safety. These fabulous seminars include subjects like Boat
Handling Under Power, On-Board Weather Prediction, GPS, the new
VHF/DSC Radio and others. Our Squadron Education Officer, Dan
Thomas has dedicated himself to bringing in as many of these as he
can for our squadron to utilize. It is all part of an organized,
deliberate effort for VBPS to be a primary contributor to the
unique quality of life here in Vero Beach. Its happening, too. Weve
met many new people by joining the Chamber of Commerce, were
getting more of our news published in the local papers, were
holding more of our 2-day public boating courses, and were helping
more charities. And so it goes all year long. We are Steering
Straight in 08. I am so very proud of who we are and what we are
doing. My thanks go to our great bridge officers, Committee Chairs
and tireless workersCommander Bob

Administrative Officer Lt/C James A. Ward, PYour Membership
Committee has been very active so far this year to keep our VBPS
growing. Lt. Kathie Thomas and her committee (Sandy Raynes, Janet
Leh & Judy Ward) report we have 14 new members. Ron &
Leslie Blair, Peter Juliano, Brian & Pat Livingston, Peter
Brown, Kevin & Natasha Anderson & their children, Geneva
& Devin John and Ryan & Melissa Weaver and their daughters
Lauren & Sara Anne. Please make these new members feel welcome!
In addition to recruiting, the Membership Committee held a Ladies
Luncheon at Janet Lehs house to develop a list of activities that
interest women. 38 attended and a few of the suggestions included a
book club, casino trip, shopping trip, theater or museum, ladies
golf andof course more lunches! The Boating Committee led by Lt.
Harold Leh has also been very active. In January a Luncheon Cruise
to Harbor Cove Restaurant at Harbor Town Marina in Fort Pierce was
well attended with 6 boats and 45 people. In February we had 45
members from the VBPS & VBYC attend Poker Run followed by hot
dogs and hamburgers back at our building. Because of weather, our
raft-up venue had to be changed from hole-in-the-wall to Janet
& Harold Lehs house. Over 40 people attended and all had a
great time. Thank you Janet & Harold for opening up your home
to us! In March, Bill Zilg has planned the Predicted Log (22nd) and
Luncheon Cruise to the Moorings (26th) for us. Plans have been made
for our Southern Cruise in April, and a Northern Cruise in June. We
have also planned two 3day cruises with hotels available at our
destinations. The May cruise is to Stuart and the August cruise is
to Melbourne. Anyone who would like to join the cruisers can get
reservations at nearby hotels and join us for a docktail party. In
July, we have our District 8 Rendezvous (18th-20) at the Marina Del
Mar in Key Largo. Friday night socials have been well attended. I
want to thank each of you who volunteered to host. YOU have made
each a success. Dont forget to sign-up to host future Friday
nights. Currently, no one has signed up to host after Friday March
28th. Our Change of Watch in January was well attended at the Vero
Beach Yacht Club. The Clubs staff did an outstanding job and our
own Tom Barrett provided the music for our dancing and listening
pleasure. In February our Steak-out was a great success, hosted by
Dottie Mancini and Bill Heimbaugh and their team. Marlene and Dave
Brooks are hosting our annual St. Patricks Day dinner on Sunday
March 16th. Sign-up and join the fun! Dottie Mancini is hosting an
Italian Dinner on April 6th, so keep the date open! A full list of
activities is posted in our VBPS building and sign-up sheets will
be posted at the appropriate time.

Continued From Page 8 The latest the hotel will hold our block
of room reservations is IMPORTANT Wednesday June 18,2008. After
that date they open the rooms to the public. We plan to have a
DOCKTAIL PARTY/POT LUCK DINNER on Friday afterActivities noon
starting about 5:00. There is a very nice and SHADY picnic area
dockside where we can set up our tables and cooking is possible
with an available charcoal grill. Bring your finger foods and
something to share along with BYOB (your favorite beverage). The
pools and all facilities will be open for evening FUN. Saturday -
Breakfast at Marina Del Mar Hotel (7:00 10:00 a.m.) followed by as
much activity as you can stand. The area offers many activities
from scuba or snorkel to the Glass Bottom Boat to trying your luck
aboard the large Sun Cruz Casino Boat. All these activities are
available from our docks. The other activity that many will choose
involves relaxing poolside (several pools and hot tubs). Lunchtime
eating can take place aboard the boats, at the Coconuts Restaurant
(dockside), at other restaurants in the area or in the picnic area
where we have volunteers to provide hot dogs and hamburgers at a
minimal cost. The Squadron Commanders will gather in the D8
Commanders Suite for an important meeting at 2:00 p.m. and then
everyone is invited to The Commanders Reception (Commanders Suite)
at 5:30. We have reserved space at the Coconuts Restaurant (6:30
11:00 p.m.) for dinner where we can all sit together but order from
the main menu. We will have drawings for door prizes and the 50/50
raffle following (or during) dinner. Sunday Breakfast at Marina Del
Mar Hotel followed by lots of relaxing inactivity. Some people will
stay an extra night and most of the boats will depart mid morning
for the return trip to their home ports. Please register and plan
to come and join us in the fun. Please contact me (Email is best
[email protected] ) for additional information. Also, please
checkout the following websites to gain additional information on
this great location www.marinadelmarkeylargo.com or
www.holidayinnkeylargo.com or www.keylargomarina.com FINAL NOTE:
Getting there. In our recent trip (Jan 2008) to Key Largo we
encountered very heavy traffic due to extensive construction on the
road from Florida City (Rte 1) to Key Largo. Our return trip north
via Little Card Sound Road was much quicker.

Executive Officer Lt/C William W. Heimbaugh, SI want to thank
Howard and Maggie Daniels for another successful yard sale. They
really have it down after running this event for the last five
years. Maggie wanted me to thank all the women who worked so hard
in the kitchen and boutique and, of course those who baked some of
the finest cookies, cakes, brownies and pie around. Howard wanted
me to thank everyone who donated some fine items and thanks to Coop
Charting who helped with getting all those fine items to the
Squadron building from our storage facility. For our new members
there is lots to do, for example, Coop Charting Group is great way
to learn about the ICW, where its shallow and where its deep water.
Its a great way to meet members and learn something about where to
go with your boat if youre not familiar with the water around here.
Contact Harold Leh or talk to him at our Friday night socials. The
Fishing Group, this is another fun group that has grown over the
years. Dick Carlin has done a great job building this group and
finding some wonderful fishing spots. As of 1330 today (Saturday
3-15-08) his group had caught 7 king mackerel , the other boat had
one catfish no need to mention the captain of that boat. Whether
youre a beginner or a pro youll have a fabulous time. And thanks to
Bev Jones and Ed Dreher for their work on the poster contest. Their
committee has picked the local winners . And the winning posters
will be presented at the District 8 Spring Conference April 25th
held at the Ft. Lauderdale Marriott. Our PR person has been doing a
great job, keep up the good work Bob Scully.
