Major Attractions of Surin Province Surin City Pillar Shrine The City Pillar is an important sacred place of Surin Province situated about 500 meters to the West of the City Hall. Originally it was only the shrine with no pillar for over hundred years. In 1968, the Fine Arts Department built a new City Pillar Shrine and the 3-meter city pillar was carved from the Javanese Cassia Tree. Phraya Surin Phakdi Sri Narong Chang Wang Monument was built in 1974 to commemorate the first establisher of the city who was a very important person in the history of Surin City. The monument was situated at the southern entrance where it used to be the cityûs inner wall of Surin City. The 2.2-meter brass black- smoked statue, with a curved-bladed hook in the right hand marks his ability in controlling the war elephant and pair of swords on his back represents the brave warrior. At present, it is revered to Surin people. Guay and Elephant Monument is located near Phraya Surin Phakdi Sri Narong Chang Wang Monument to commemorate 5 Guay people namely Chiangpum (Phraya Surin Phakdi Sri Narong Chang Wang) of Ban Kok Muang Thi, Takaja and Chiangkhan of Ban Prasat Siliam Kok Lamduan Yai, Chiangkha of Ban Dong Yang (Kok Atja) and Chiangsi of Ban Gud Wai. The 5 Guay people had helped the 2 brothers noblemen catching a white elephant that ran away from Ayutthya City and returned the white elephant back to Ayutthaya City. In return the 5 Guay people were graciously given the çLuangé title rulling the people in their own areas under the supervision of Muang Pimai. Wat Burapharam Wat Burapharam is located in the area of Surin City Municipality. It is a very old Wat assumed to be built in Thonburi or early Rattanakosin Period dating back some 200 years, the same time as Muang Surin, by Phraya Surin Phakdi Sri Narong Chang Wang (Chiangpum). The Religious Affairs Department had upgraded to be a Sample Development Wat in 1968. His Majesty the King Upgraded Wat Burapharam to be the royal monastery in 1977. Phanom Sawai Forest Park It is located in the area of Na Bua and Sawai Sub-Districts, Muang District, Surin province, about 22 kilometers from Surin city, froming the continuous low hills with a large water recess from the rock blasting concession which is a very beautiful scenery and having many kinds of plants. The park comprises 3 major peaks with the first peak called Chai Peak (Phanom Prawh) of 200 meters high where the Buddha Image Phra Buddha Surin Mongkol is enshrined. The second peak is Ying Peak (Phanom Srai) of 210 meters high where Wat Phanom Silaram ia located. The third peak is Khok Peak (Phanom Krol) of 150 meters high where the Buddhist Society of Surin province has built the çAtthamuké Pavillion on top in memorial to celebrate the Rattanakosin 200 Years Anniversay to enshrine the Replica of the Buddhaûs Footprint and on every 1 st day of the new moon in the 5 th lunar month, there will be a Merit Festival going up Sawai Hill. Luang Pho Phra Chi Luang Pro Phra Chi is Buddha Image in Subduing Mara Posture with 4 cubits lap wide enshirned at Wat Burapharam. There is no evicence when this Luang Pho Phra Chi or Luang Pho pa Ji was built. It is believed to be built at the same time as Wat Burapharam and considered the worship object that is most revered by Surinûs local people and the sacred Buddha Image of Surin people. Nature Attractions Huaituptun-Huaisamran Wildlife Sanctuary It is located near Takao Dam Amphoe Kabchoeng. Nong Khu Pinery Forest Park It is located in the area of Tap Than Sub-District, Sangkha District, Surin Province. It is a Forest Park and Reserved Area of Merkus Pines (Son Song Bai) plants which is considered the best kind of plateau pines covering an area of 625 Rais with outstanding nature to be the only plateau merkus pinery in Thailand. The park is about 35 kilometers from Surin town along Surin-Sangkha Road, another place for relaxation and natural study of Surin Province. Huai Saneng Khao Sala Buddha Park It is located in the area of Charas Sub-District, Buachet District, Surin Province, about 17 kilometers from Buachet District next to Charas Dam. the scenery is quite spectacular with abundant forest landscape. There are a steep cliff called Pha Nang Khoi where Charas Dam Reservoir is situated below suitable to be another relaxing and natural study place of Surin Province. At present, Wat Khao Sala Atulathanjaro which the Religious Affairs Department has received the approval area of 10,865 Rais from the Royal forestry Department to set up as the Buddha Park. Huai Saneng is a reservoir of the Irrigation, about 9 kilometers from Surin town along the Surin-Prasat Road. It is a beautiful scenic reservoir, a relaxing place in the evening of Surin people and for tourists. Restaurants and accommo dations are available for visiting tourists. Insid the Irrigaion Office, there is a royal residence of the Princess Mother Trai Khiri Waterfall It is located in the area of Moo 1, Charas Sub-District, Buachet District, near Charas Dam, a waterfall in the Rune Stream. It can be reached by traveling from charas Reservoir 45 minutes by boat and then walk further another 0.5 kilometers or walk 3 kilometers from khao Sala. Art & Culture Attractions Elephant Village The elephant village is located at Ban Ta Klang, Kra Pho Sub-District, Tha Thum District, Surin Province, 58 kilometers from Surin city. The Ta Klang villagers are Guay people. In the past they had occupation in capturing elephants to train for works and keep as pets for families. The interesting thing for the elephant village is the community with unique traditions and lifestyles. Both people and elephants have sharing lifestyles, help each other through the past centuries. Ban Tha Sawang Silk Weaving Village (ancient weaving with gold thread) Tha Sawang Village, Tha Sawang Sub-District, Muang District, Surin Province is about 10 kilometers from Surin city with convenient traveling along the Road No. 3009. It is a village weaving çPha Mai Yok Thong Boranané (ancient silk weaving with gold thread). Each fabric takes 2-3 months in making design, drawing pattern and collecting Ta Kor (the selection of silk yarn). It takes 1-3 months to finish and need at least 4 weavers for each loom. Each loom produces 5-7 centimeters length daily. The silk is not sold in the market. The silk was selected from the government as the fabric to produce shirts for all country leaders in the occasion that Thailand hosted the APEC Meeting in October 2003. At present, a lot of tourists both Thai and foreign travel to visit the silk weaving at Ban Tha Sawang. Khaow Sinarin Silk Weaving and Silverware Village It is located at Ban Khaow Sinarin, Khaow Sinarin Sub-District, Khaow Sinarin Minor District, a famous village in weaving local-style design silks and crafting silver beads to make ornaments for ladies and gentlemen which are the villagerûs unique handicrafts. Tourists can visit the silk weaving, silverware making and shop the local products everyday at Ban Khaow Sinarin. Thai-Cambodian Border Trading Market (Chong Chom Permanent Crossing Point) It is located in the area of Dan Sub-District, Kab Choeng District, about 69 kilometers from Surin city, 13 kilometers from Kab Choeng District along the Surin-Chom Thong Road (214). At present, it opens as a permanent crossing point for gateway to Indochina for people of both countries to trade and travel back and forth. It is the biggest and important Border Trading Market in the Southern I-San area. It opens everyday from 07.00 a.m.-08.00 p.m. Buthom Basketry Village Buthom Basketry Village is located at Muang Thi Sub-District, Muang District, about 15 kilometers from the city along the Surin- Sikhoraphum route (266). Out of rice growing season, the villagers will have special occupation in weaving rattan basketry to increase their income and as useful souvenirs for sales to the tourists. Agro-Tourism Center Surin Plants and Production Factors Academic Service Center (Tel. 0-4451-1393) is located at the 3 rd kilometer on the Surin-Buriram Road (226), a Government Center with activities arranged for tourists to see the cultivating of mulberry for silkworms in the çNatural Libraryé format. Within the 5-Rai area of this Center, you will be in touch with and learn the full local step of mulberry and silkworms cultivation. You will see the silk spinning, silk dyeing from natural colors, design creating on the silk fabric by the Mud Mee silks of Surin Province and hundreds of unique local-style silk designs throughout the country. Important Festivals of Surin Province Going up Khao Sawai Traditional Festival The ancestors of Surin people believed that Khao Sawai or Phanom Sawai is the place to seek merit. On every 1 st day of the new moon in the fifth lunar month, Surin people will hold an annual merit event called Going up Khao Sawai Festival at the Park to seek merit and pay respect to Phra Buddha Surintramongkol. The day is a traditional holiday for Surin people since the ancient times. Tha Thum District Long Boat Racing Traditional Festival In every second week of October, the people of Tha Thum District will hold a Long Boat Racing Festival at the Mun Stream at the pier of Wat Pho Prueksaram, Tha Thum Sub-District Municipality. Each year there will be a lot of long boats from many provinces join in the racing. Surin Province Elephant Show and the World Biggest Elephant Party The Elephant Show of Surin Province is considered the national festival. It is scheduled to hold the event in every third week of November at Elephant Show Field, Surin Province. Each year there will be tourists from all over the world to visit this event. It is a great elephant show bringing fame to Thailand and Surin Province. Surin Province has held the Elephant Show continuously for over 40 years and each year there will be not less than 200 elephants join the show. Elephant Ordination Traditional Festival During every 13 th -15 th day of the new moon in the sixth lunar month, Guay people at the Elephant Village will hold an annual Ordination Festival carrying Nagas (candidates for ordination) by elephants. Each year there will be a lot of Nagas and elephants join the event especially on the 14 th day of the new moon in the sixth lunar month which is the Naga carrying day. There will be a procession of hundred elephants carrying Nagas to Wang Talu (the point that the Chi Stream meets with the Mun River) to pay homage to sacred things. Important Festivals of Surin Province Prasat Yai Ngao It is located at Ban Phunchai, Chob Sub-District, Sangkha District, 5 Kilometers to the southeast from Sangkha District Office. It is a Khmer monastery comprising 2 Prangs situated in line facing the east made of brick on the laterite base. There are brick carving designs such as the dragon design at the door frame (designed mixing among lion, elephant and fish) holding 5 headed Naga in the mouth. Eel and new Jasmine Rice Festival Chumpon Buri District, located in the area of Thung Kula Ronghai, is a place to produce the well-known jasmine rice of Surin province. It is a plateau with the Mun and Plap Phla Streams run parallel to the north and south along the district line suitable for the living and expanding the species of eels. After finishing the harvesting of Jasmine Rice, the people of Chumpon Buri will hold an event çEel and new Jasmine Rice Festivalé during every third week of December at the front yard of the Chumpon Buri District Office. Historical Sites Attractions Prasat Ban Pluang It is located at Ban Pluang, Ban Pluang Sub-District, Prasat District, 4 kilometers from Prasat District Office along the Surin-Chong Jom Road (214). It is a one Prang (Pagoda) Prasat situated on the laterite base made of laterite sandstone in Bapuan Art during the Bapuan period of 1007-1107 A.D. Prasat Sikhoraphum or Prasat Ra-ngeang It is located at Ban Prasat, Ra- ngeang Sub-District, Sikhoraphum District. It was built in the Bapuan period around 1107 A.D. comprises 5 Prangs situated on the same base made of laterite stones, with the main middle Prang measuring about 32 meters high. There are beautiful designs engraved onto the columns and exquisite lintels. Prasat Chom Phra It is located within Wat Prasat Chom Phra, an Arokayasala or Hospital or Nursing Home in the ancient times. It was built during the period of King Chaiworaman VII of sandstone and laterite stones, facing the east in Khmer Ba Yon Art around 1177-1237 B.E. Prasat Phum Pon It is located at Ban Phum Pon, Dom Sub-District, Sangkha District, comprises 4 sanctuaries made of bricks 3 Prasats and laterite stones 1 Prasat. This is the oldest Khmer Prasat in Thailand and was built around the 13 th century B.E. Group of Prasat Ta Muean They are located on the south of Ban Nong Khan Na, Miang Sub-District Phanom Dongrak Minor District on the Thai-Cambodian border The Khmer Sanctuaries are situated near to each other comprise 3 groups of Prasat namely Prasat Ta Muean or Prasat Yai Greem facing the east, made of laterite stones. It is believed to be a Dharma Pavilion or the travelers shelter or house of person who has fire which was built during the period of King Chaiworaman VII. Prasat Ta Muean Tot is 200 meters to the south from Prasat Ta Muean, facing the south, made of laterite and sandstone. It was an Arokayasala or Hospital in the ancient times and built during the period of King Chaiworaman VII in the 18 th century B.E. Prasat Ta Muean Thom is located about 700 meters to the south from Prasat Ta Muean Tot on the line of Banthat Mountain, facing the south, made of sandstone and laterite stones. It is a Hindu monatery of Sawai sect respecting Phra Siva as the highest god.
