pesticides into lakes and streams, and farmworkers will be exposed to toxins we already know affect their health. The seed and pesticide companies assure us of product safety, but I don’t buy their claims. Moreover, for the summer of 2014, I will skip the cheap sweet corn in my grocer’s produce department and support my local farmer by buying sweet corn at our local farmers’ market. To end on a high note, why not take some time this May to invest in a small backyard garden and grow your own organic vegetables this summer? A few tomato plants and some seeds (for carrots, spinach, lettuce, and green beans) can be grown in a compact space, and you will enjoy their bounty all summer. Backyard gardening is a great family activity. My grand-daughters love to help Papa in the garden, and eating what we harvest is great fun. You will also save money, eat healthier, and get a little exercise.

My mom always used to say, “April showers bring May flowers.” For those of us who live in the

northern portions of the country, May is the perfect time of year. Tempera-tures are warm but not hot, most bugs are not out yet—so evenings are enjoyable, and longer days make the outdoors even better. May is time for new signs of life as trees blossom, tulips bloom, grass turns green, and birds return from their winter migration.

My original editorial this month was going to be on enjoying outdoor activities. But issues concerning GMOs have been trending in the natural product industry. The Non-GMO Project now has more than 15,000 products wearing its non-GMO label, 5,000 of which obtained non-GMO status within the last nine months. These products represent a $5 billion industry, according to the Project. These developments are positive signs that companies are moving in the right direction by responding to consumer demands for non-GMO products, even without government enforcement.

Personally, I am on the fence concerning GMOs. There may be some instances in which the use of GMOs may be applicable, but more often I lean toward the safety of products and I am wary of unknown long-term effects. I am also concerned about crops that are being developed to resist fertilizers like Agent Orange (yes, the same chemical used during the Vietnam War). Farming involves natural processes, so Agent Orange may not always be contained in specific farm fields. For example, wind can blow pesticides into nearby farms, rainwater runoff can introduce
