Description

Overview & Job Duties:

The Natural Resources Coordinator will work in a joint capacity with the Natural Resources Conservation

Service (NRCS), the Eddy & Foster Soil Conservation Districts (SCD), and its partners to promote,

accelerate enrollment, coordinate and implement the voluntary conservation provisions of the Federal

Farm Bill, and other related state and local conservation programs. The Natural Resources Coordinator

will work in county Soil Conservation District/NRCS offices to promote available conservation programs

and provide both programmatic and technical assistance to private landowners interested in enrolling in

these programs. This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits, co-funded by the Eddy County SCD,

Foster County SCD and USDA-NRCS. The position is funded for one year but is expected to be longer

term, subject to appropriations. The incumbent will be an employee of the Eddy and Foster County SCD

and will receive general supervision guidelines from the Joint SCD Board with daily instruction provided

by the local USDA-NRCS District Conservationist. Successful applicant will receive required training from

USDA, and NDSCD on priority conservation programs.

Duties:

Coordinates Soil Conservation District involvement and assistance in a variety of programs and

activities with NRCS District Conservationist,

Assumes responsibility and exercise own initiative in furthering district programs.

Cooperate with NRCS personnel in carrying out conservation programs.

Assist in developing educational outreach programs/activities for local schools, groups and

agencies.

Advise NRCS personnel of landowners needing technical assistance

Assist with gathering data needed for conservation plans.

Assist with conservation practice design, layout, and installation with associated paperwork.

Become familiar with the NRCS Field Office Technical Guide and conservation practice

specifications

Participate in developing the SCD/NRCS annual and long range plan of work.

Report monthly to SCD board on activities and accomplishments.

Publicize conservation efforts in cooperation with NRCS District Conservationist and other SCD

staff through news articles.

Record farmer contacts and significant follow-up in cooperator file assistance notes.

Promote/Manage SCD service programs.

Coordinate requests for assistance with NRCS and other appropriate resource agencies.

Provide assistance to cooperators applying practices.

Seek follow-up on practices installed to evaluate their effectiveness.

Provide programmatic and technical assistance for USDA conservation programs to private

landowners, governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations;

Work closely with county USDA staff to ensure that USDA conservation programs are

implemented on private land in a manner that maximizes the soil, water, air, plants and other

wildlife benefits of the programs;

Assist USDA and private landowners with applications, contracts and other documentation

required for participation in USDA conservation programs;

Promote and encourage private landowners to participate in USDA conservation programs and

conservation programs from other conservation organizations;

Conduct site visits to determine eligibility for USDA conservation programs;

Assist USDA with conservation practice follow-up and evaluation of lands enrolled in USDA

conservation programs to maximize conservation benefits; educate participating

landowner/operator

Assist with other duties, as needed.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

o Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with Agricultural Producers and

Landowners

o Ability to work independently with little supervision and with diverse clientele.

o Knowledge/Experience in natural resources/agriculture/farming operations; including

the ability to utilize inventory and analysis tools to develop Best Management Practices

for identified resource concerns.

o Excellent verbal and written communication.

o Strong organizational skills.

o Valid driver’s license required; some use of personal vehicle required (mileage

reimbursement provided).

o Able to obtain USDA Federal Security Clearance.

o United States Citizen, or alien authorized to work in the United States.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

o 2-yr Associate degree or 4-yr. Bachelor of Science degree in a Natural Resources field or

a closely related Agricultural field.

o Any combination of education, experience and training that enables the applicant to

possess the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
