Introduction

In this virtual album you will find all about water, soil and energy resources in Cali and Colombia so pay many attention about what you are going to see. This will help you understand how people use resources in many ways.

Page 5: Natural resources

Renewable and Nonrenewable Resources

• Natural resources are materials found on Earth. They are divide in renewable and nonrenewable resources.

• Renewable= They can be cycled over and over.

Examples: fresh air, water and soil.

• Nonrenewable= They can’t be repleced quickly.

Examples: diamonds, gold also coal.

Page 6: Natural resources

What are water resources?• Water resources= Are sources of water that are very useful for humans.

97% is salt water.3% is fresh water and the 3% wich over 2/3 are frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps, living 1/3 wich is founded in groundwater.

Page 8: Natural resources

Water Pollution

• Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (lakes, rivers, oceans, groundwater).

• Water pollution affects plants and organisms living in the water.

Ways people use water resources

The uses of Fresh Water:

Agricultural: Is estimated that the 69% use irrigation for grow crop. Aquaculture: Fresh water commercial fisheries may also be considered as agricultural uses of water.

Industrial: Is estimated that the 15% use water for cooling or as a power source(hydroelectric plants)

Ways people use water resources

Household: It is estimated that 15% use water for household, these include drinking, water bathing, cooking, sanitation and gardening.

Recreation: It is usally a very small amount but growing percentage of total water use.

Environmental: It is also a small amount that includes artificial wetlands, and lakes that intented to creat wildlife habitat.

Ways to conserve water

• Turn the water off while you are brushing your teeth or face.

• Take shorter showers.• Don’t leave the garden hose on all night when watering plants.

• Check your home and school leaky faucets and tell and adult if you find one that drips.

News • Colombia: government seeks to moderate water consumption through rate increase

• January 29, 2010 ·• The Colombian government will issue a presidential decree in January 2010 to increase water tariffs in an effort to moderate water consumption in the country, local paper La República reported.

• Rates will be adjusted in each region according to water usage and climate variables, environment and housing minister Carlos Costa was quoted as saying.

• Households located in cold areas with a monthly consumption of more than 28m3 will experience rate increases, as will households in warm areas that consume over 34m3/month and those in hot areas with a monthly consumption exceeding 35m3, the report said.

Page 18: Natural resources

• According to government projections, some 100 municipalities are at risk of water rationing in 2010, as a result of the El Niño weather phenomenon, which affects rainfall amounts.

• Bogotá city does not appear to be at risk and is using its potable water reserve to support the water supply in its surrounding municipalities, according to the report.

• A total of 13 municipalities are already experiencing water rationing, including Villeta, La Mesa, Apulo, Barichara and San Juan Nepomuceno.

Page 19: Natural resources

News

• The El Niño weather phenomenon has put Colombia on alert for water shortages and the risk of fires, and has already begun to affect agriculture.

• "El Niño has manifested itself with little rainfall in the Caribbean and Andean regions, where 75 per cent of Colombia's population lives, and with an increase in forest fires and heatwaves," said Humberto Gonzalez, the head of forecasts and alerts at the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM).

• An IDEAM report notes that El Niño arrived in May with the warming of the tropical Pacific Ocean, and in June had increased the water level by half a degree.

In this project you can learn and meet a lot of things you maybe do not know you can learn this: what resources are, what soil is, how do people use soil, how soil can be harmed, ways to save soil and problems that we have with soil and some possible solutions.

Introduction

Page 31: Natural resources

Is material capable of supporting plant life. Soil forms through a variety of soil formation processes, and includes weathered "parent material" combined with dead and living organic matter and air. Soils are vital to all life on Earth because they support the growth of plants, which supply food and oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

What is Soil?

Page 32: Natural resources

Soil is been repeatedly ruined and destroyed. Soil is composed of both inorganic materials and living organism, it provides the basics for life, giving nutrients to plants which allows animal life to exist. Soil is used extensively in human production, it contains natural fibers, and produces lumber and crops that people consume, crops are usually grown in mollisols

HOW DO PEOPLE USE SOIL RESOURCES

Page 33: Natural resources

Soil is found in other places such us tropical rain forest, usually lack the nutrients necessary to support the growing of crops. Soil comes from sediments that are left by the wind, volcano, glaciers, or other resources. Soil resources can be lost thought erosion, conservation efforts aim to prevent erosion and maintain life-giving nutrients that are found in the soil.

Page 35: Natural resources

• What results does BWSR hope to see in 1, 5, and 10 years in terms of reduced soil erosion and pollution runoff from your Legacy work?

• Jaschke: In the first year we will see proven conservation practices installed in the most critical locations as a result of the dedicated funding that has been made available for nonpoint pollution reduction. Initially we will be projecting future results based on the benefits of projects and practices that we’ve seen in the past, and we will be requiring grant recipients to monitor their projects periodically, so that in 5-10 years we will be able to start seeing improvements on specific water bodies. Many local government units already have volunteer citizen water monitoring programs in place, and by collaborating with university and agency researchers, we will enhance and refine best management practices to improve water quality and wildlife habitat.

Introduction• In this virtual album you can meet

some things you have questions and you can learn many things about it. This will help you to understand how people save or not energy resources or how we can use energy more efficient.

Page 43: Natural resources

What are Energy Resources?• Energy comes in different forms:Heat (thermal)Light (radiant) Motion (kinetic)Electrical Chemical Nuclear energy Gravitational

Page 44: Natural resources

Energy is in everything. We use energy for everything we do, from making a jump shot to baking cookies to sending astronauts into space.

• There are two types of energy:Stored (potential) energy Working (kinetic) energy

For example, the food you eat contains chemical energy, and your body stores this energy until you use it when you work or play.

Page 45: Natural resources

Renewable EnergyRenewable (energy source that can be easily

replenished)Renewable energy sources include:• Solar energy from the sun, which can be turned into

electricity and heat• Wind• Geothermal energy from heat inside the Earth• Biomass from plants, which includes firewood from

trees, ethanol from corn, and biodiesel from vegetable oil

• Hydropower from hydroturbines at a dam

Page 47: Natural resources

Nonrenewable EnergyNonrenewable ( energy source that we are using up and

cannot recreate)We get most of our energy from nonrenewable energy

sources, which include the fossil fuels oil, natural gas, and coal. They're called fossil fuels because they were formed over millions and millions of years by the action of heat from the Earth's core and pressure from rock and soil on the remains of dead plants and creatures like microscopic diatoms. Another nonrenewable energy source is the element uranium, whose atoms we split (through a process called nuclear fission) to create heat and ultimately electricity.

Page 48: Natural resources

Forms of Energy

Forms of EnergyEnergy is found in different forms including light,

heat, chemical, and motion. There are many forms of energy, but they can all be put into two categories: potential and kinetic.

Page 49: Natural resources

Potential EnergyPotential energy is stored energy and the energy of position — gravitational energy. There are several forms of potential energy.

Kinetic EnergyKinetic energy is motion — of waves, molecules, objects, substances, and objects.

Chemical Energy is energy stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules. Biomass, petroleum, natural gas, and coal are examples of stored chemical energy.

Mechanical Energy is energy stored in objects by tension.

Nuclear Energy is energy stored in the nucleus of an atom the energy that holds the nucleus together.

Gravitational Energy is energy stored in an object's height. The higher and heavier the object, the more gravitational energy is stored.

Electrical Energy is what is stored in a battery, and can be used to power a cell phone or start a car. Electrical energy is delivered by tiny charged particles called electrons

Radiant Energy is electromagnetic energy that travels in transverse waves.

Thermal Energy, or heat, is the vibration and movement of the atoms and molecules within substances.

Motion Energy is energy stored in the movement of objects.

Sound is the movement of energy through substances in longitudinal waves. Sound is produced when a force causes an object or substance to vibrate

Page 50: Natural resources

How do people use energy resources?

We use a lot of energy in our homes, in businesses, in industry, and for personal travel and transporting goods.

The industrial sector Includes facilities and equipment used for

manufacturing, agriculture, mining, and construction.

Page 51: Natural resources

The transportation sectorComprises vehicles that transport people or goods, such as: cars,

trucks, buses, motorcycles, trains, subways, aircraft, boats, barges, and even hot air balloons.

The residential sectorConsists of homes and apartments.

The commercial sectorIncludes buildings such as offices, malls, stores, schools,

hospitals, hotels, warehouses, restaurants, places of worship, and more.

Page 52: Natural resources

Ways to save energy resources

• Turning off the light when we don´t need it.• Try to not always use your car you can use your bike.• People can also save a lot by making clever buildings which

can make their own energy and don't waste the energy they do use.

• Insulation isn't very exciting but it's the quickest, cheapest and best way to save energy in homes, schools and offices.

Without energy, there would be nothing: no life, no movement, no light, no heat, no you, no me… nothing.

Page 53: Natural resources

News Colombia should develop alternate sources of

energy, experts of the Mining and Energy Ministry said Saturday.

Colombia has a high potential for the development of alternate sources of energy, but the high cost of research and development has prevented their mass production, said Josue Zapata and Luis Carlos Romero, experts from the ministry.

They said that Colombia has the resources, the technology, and the needs to implement this kind of energy sources, but coherence is needed in the nation.
