Happy New Year’s Hello Wa:k Community Animal Control Last year there was a total of 141 animal control incidents a majority of the calls were unwanted dogs. The dogs were taken to Pima Animal Control. The department is asking to work on lowering this number by getting your dog spayed or neutered. Be responsible and help control the dog population in our community.

Stats for the month of November 2016 Animal Control – 5, Property Damage – 6, Community Assist – 6, Suspicious Activity – 7, Assist Other Department – 1, Trespassing – 1, Public Assist – 1, Motorist Assist - 1 Important Telephone numbers: Emergency 911 TO Police 622-1587, 879-8900 Ranger Department 807-8499 Ranger Supervisor 807-8484 Ranger cellphone 471-8092 Ranger Supervisor cell 349-1359 Environmental: The following article was taken from the EPA Web Site. Winter Heating Safety Generator exhaust is toxic. Always put generators out-side well away from doors, windows, and vents. Carbon monoxide (CO) is deadly, can build up quickly, and linger for hours. Combustion appliances are those which burn fuels for warmth, cooking, or decorative purposes. Typical fuels are gas, both natural and liquefied petroleum; kerosene; oil; coal; and wood. Examples of the appliances are space heaters, ranges, ovens, furnaces, wood burning stoves, fireplaces, water heaters, and clothes dryers. These appliances are usually safe. However, under certain conditions, these appliances can produce combustion pollutants that can damage your health, or even kill you. Possible health effects range from headaches, dizziness, sleepiness, and watery eyes to breathing difficulties or even death. Similar effects may also occur because of common medical problems or other indoor air pollutants. A properly installed, correctly used wood-burning appli-ance should be smoke free. If you see or smell smoke that means you may have a problem. Never burn household garbage, colored paper or ink, or any type of plastic, foam, or other artificial materials. Burning these can release harmful chemicals. Safety around the home: When your children or grandchildren are outside beware of what’s outside. Never leave your child alone by any water, keep cleaning materials and chemicals in a safe place, secure old cars, refrigerators, and any other places children might get trapped in. Also remind your children about dogs and stranger danger. Keep your eyes on your children. The staff sends their prayers and thoughts to all the families who have lost a loved one in the past month, May the Creator be with you during this time.

A LONG OVER DUE GOAL~~~~~~

On December 4th, I, Gloria Rios Graduated from Prescott College with a BA in Early Childhood Education. This Goal took a lot of twists and turns and there were times that I told myself “Forget it, I give up” but there were a lot of people that stood by and was my cheering team. I don’t know what to do or how to tell you how much your support meant to me during my ups and downs.

THANK YOU very much from the bottom of my heart. There were also some organizations within our community that also helped me, thank you very much.

My next goal is to give back to my community and the nation by getting a job to help young children, parents, guardians and the community.

Once again thank you to the following people and organizations; Roger Lopez, Stewart Gilmore & family, Conley and Amanda, Chaz Gilmore & Family, Loretta Encinas, Kit & Karen, My interviews----David Lopez, Alan Encinas, Ayana Ortega and Guest, The Late Cecelia Nunez, San Xavier Development Authority, San Xavier Education Committee, Tobacco Barn

Basket Class: Katrina Thomas. Katrina is a new student to the basket class this year, she has been to every single class and stays focused. I appreciate her will to learn a skill that is dying, it take LOTS of time, patience and effort. Her basket is coming out BEAUTIFULLY!! Head Start Kakaicu Ki: Engel Parra, since I have met her she has been an awesome student! She participates when asked and is absorbs information well. Continue to do a good job!

Happy New Year Wa:k Community! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones. We certainly are busy here at the Education with preparing events for the community so please make sure you take advantage of the opportunities available. The second part of the school year will zoom by fast so students make sure that your stay on top of your studies, seek out help when you need it at school. Teachers are always willing to help. If you are not comfortable asking the teachers, seek out your advisors. They could point you in the right direction. If that still doesn’t help, come to the education and we can help find you the resources to help you succeed. But the first step should always be to seek help from your teacher. After all, they are the one’s teaching the class. They could provide more insight one on one. Our After School Program resumes on January 17th 2016 and there are still slots available for some of the classes. As always any questions or concerns please feel free to stop by or contact us at (520)807-8624

Language & Culture

S-ke:g Tas Wa:k Community, S-hekig Wecij Ahidag!!! I hope you all are off to a good start in the New Year. These past winter months that I have been working with the students we have been learning about traditional games and O’odham stories. The older students were given the opportunity to experience gins, ko’omai, wuicuda, and toka. They seem to really enjoy these topics of O’odham himdag. I want to acknowledge some students from each class that I en-gage with… In each of these individuals I have seen interest, progress, and knowledge growing all in their own effort to learn. S.X. Childcare: Micah Osegueda, He picks up O’odham words fairly quickly and is always ready to participate in projects that we do as a class. He has a good memory and always pronounces very well! Head Start-Kawyu Ki: Azaylia, She has been on top of her O’o-dham culture since we’ve began. I want to thank her parents and Hu’ul for teaching her what she already knows, continue to share everything that you know with her. She is a very respectable student! Apollo: Destiny Josemaria, she has showed up to every class and is always willing to learn about O’odham himdag. When we dis-cuss certain things, she begins to remember what she has heard or seen before. After School Program: Davian Thomas-Hernandez, he is al-ways looking forward to O’odham class. When I see him in the hall, he asks if we are having class today. He is quick to pick up words that we have learned in class and is very competitive when we play games in O’odham. SXMS 6th grade: Alicia Antone, this past month, the students were instructed to learn a story from their culture. She and her group learned a story from their O’odham grandma. Alicia told the story to the class from here memory. I was VERY proud of her! SXMS 7th grade: Lorenzo Matus, last year in 6th grade I briefly went over a lullaby song in O’odham and the first day I walked in to their 7th grade class I asked if they learned any O’odham songs over the summer. Lorenzo stated that he learned the lullaby that is in O’odham, I was skeptical and said ok sing it. He led the class and they all sung it. I was surprised and happy. He is always will-ing to learn and share! SXMS 8th grade: Sonya Salway, Sonya has been a focused stu-

dent since 6th grade. She is always on task and seeks more than

what we learn in class. I would like to thank her mother and grand-

mother for keeping her near and dear to O’odham himdag.
