“We Love Our Church”
A Note from Mother Susan
Welcome back to many of you from all your summer activities!
Brad and I recently returned from our vacation. We went on a cruise from Vancouver to Anchorage. It was
beautiful! We stayed in Anchorage for four days and while there we visited the Alaska Native Heritage Center.
Outside the center are spread six life-sized traditional native dwellings that represent the eleven major cultural
groups of the native peoples of Alaska. Inside the center are displays, a Hall of Cultures, to further illustrate
these groups. The dance performance in the Gathering Place and the displays were fascinating. They helped us
to understand the vastness of Alaska, a land that has supported such a variety of native peoples.
We were given a brochure that listed those peoples and their Ten Universal Values (taken from the Alaska
Native Knowledge Network). They reminded me of the Ten Commandments. I thought you all might find them
interesting. I certainly did.
Ten Universal Values
Show respect to others.
Each person has a special gift.
Share what you have.
Giving makes you richer.
Know who you are.
You are a reflection on your family.
Accept what life brings.
You cannot control many things.
Have patience.
Some things cannot be rushed,
Live carefully.
What you do will come back to you.
Take care of others.
You cannot live without them.
Honor your elders.
They show you the way in life.
Pray for guidance.
Many things are not known.
See connections.
All things are related.
Looking at these Values and our Ten Commandments, they all give us good ways to live our lives together and,
at the very least, start our program year. Happy Fall!
Welcome and welcome again to Church of the Good Shepherd!
Blessings,
Mother Susan+

56 days!!! 56 days!! Pop Pop and Ellie!
Just got a text from my oldest grandchild
and that was the first sentence! 56
days!! Ashley and her husband, Steve,
and Ellie and I are going on vacation in,
you guessed it, 56 days!! (less now!)
Over the past months, there has been a
countdown in both homes. Ellie and
Ashley even know what dresses they are
packing! Steve and I are not so
prepared, but we too are excited about
our journey. I am just thrilled I have
grandchildren and nieces and nephews
that want to go on a trip with me!
A few days ago, I had the privilege of
meeting the family that surrounded Jim
and Georgeanne Moore at the loss of
Jim’s father. In our time together, I
heard something repeated that I will not
most likely forget. Jim’s father, Lawrence
(Larry), got up on August 10 and went
downstairs. He spoke these words: “I
don’t feel well this morning. I think this
will be the day”! I never met Larry, but I
can tell you he was a man of faith. He
was at peace believing he would soon
transition from this life to the next – life
beyond life.
Larry was excited about his trip that
would soon begin. This trip would be one
where, I believe, he met Jesus – face to
face. He may not have packed a suitcase
for this trip, but he did pack 92 years of
walking on this earth – all the memories,
all the love, all the successes and
failures. But, I think most important, all
the prayers, questions and longings one
can fit into his soul. If he could, I think
he would have packed at least one flower
to present to Violet, his wife who had
preceded his transition to heaven. You
could feel the peace through the pain of
his departure.
Ashley and Ellie will start to pack soon
for our vacation together. Reservations
are all in place and all we need now is for
the weather to cooperate and time to
pass. Larry has already begun his new
life. He has finished the introduction to
the life on this earth and now begun the
first chapter of his eternal life with the
Lord and all the saints that got there
before us. I pray we are as ready as
Larry was for this trip!
NT Wright puts it this way: “….the liturgy
I had just witnessed is the very pattern
of Christ’s life, and in Him, our own –
birth, life, Calvary, tomb and as the
Royal Doors open a final time, the glory
of the Resurrection only Love can
believe.”
To all of our loved ones who rest in
Christ, we will see you soon!
Deacon Carl
Shawl/Caring Hands Ministry
Every so often we get a request for a Prayer Shawl to be given to someone in need. Sometimes it is during an illness, sometimes during grieving periods after the loss of a loved one. The Shawls are crocheted or knitted by the women in this ministry. Every other Tuesday morning you will find our Caring Hands Group knitting/crocheting the shawls in our Conference room. They are made with prayer for those who will receive them. I can’t begin to tell you of the peace and comfort these shawls have brought to so many people. They need not be members of our parish. Need is spread everywhere. If you know of a need, just ask Pat Braidwood

ADULT FORUM
ADULT FORUM will meet on Sunday, September 2,
at 11:30 a.m. in the Conference Room. We will
conclude our study of "Painting the Stars: Science,
Religion and Evolving Faith" with a presentation on
An Evolving Spirituality: Mysticism Have you ever
had an "aha" experience? Found yourself in an
unexplained "thin place" moment? Theologian Karl
Rahner said, "If you are talking about God, if you're
talking about anything having to do with God,
whether its ritual, sacraments, scripture, or
morality, or anything and you're sure you know
what you're talking about - you are a heretic."
Everything is a mystery - 97.9% of the universe is
invisible. Everything is a mystery. We are
immersed in mystery. What did your soul come
here to do? French Philosopher, Gaston Bachelard
said that there are three aspects to a mystical
experience: immensity, intensity and intimacy. Join
us as we learn more about this term: mysticism.
THE SQUIRREL’S CHALLENGE
For the month of September, starting September 1, we’ve got a loose change challenge for Good Shepherd. We invite you to set your favorite coffee mug out on the kitchen counter, and when you return from the store, put your loose change in it. At the end of the challenge, (the weekend of September 29/30), we ask that everyone bring their mugs to church and we will put our change together in a bucket to benefit the Squirrels’ Nest Fund. As you know, this fund helps with those surprises such as the dishwasher so we can keep our budget moving to cover those unexpected breakdowns. We thank you in advance for your generosity.

OUR PRAYERS MINISTRY
Each Sunday during Communion time, our team
of Pray-ers offer prayers with our parishioners. We
have now expanded this meaningful ministry to our
Saturday evening Holy Eucharist at 5:30pm.
After you receive Holy Communion, if you
want/need additional prayers, there will be a team
of Pray-ers in the front of the Church who are
willing to pray with you. These prayers can be
offered in joy for a Blessing you have received, or
can be to help ease a burden which lies on your
heart. Please take advantage of this wonderful
ministry of our parish. All prayers are confidential.
PASTORAL EMERGENCIES If a Pastoral Emergency should come up for you, hospitalization, death in the family, please call the Church Office 856-589-8209 or after office hours please call Mother Susan at 732-759-4358.

REGISTER YOUR CHILD FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL
Please visit https://form.jotform.com/COGSSundaySchool/sunday-school-registration-20182019 to register your child for the 2018/2019 school year!
Beginning, Thursday, September 20, we will be studying
a new series titled Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic
Parables of a Controversial Rabbi.
Amy-Jill Levine, a Professor of New Testament and
Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University will take us back
in time and explain how original audiences understood
Jesus' parables. Amy-Jill Levine's Interpretations show
how the parables still challenge and provoke
contemporary readers two thousand years later. This will
be a six-week study and will take place at 9:30-
10:30a.m. in the Conference Room. Never participated in
a Bible study? This might be a good one to step into - all
are welcome!
OUTREACH
Thank you so much for all the shoes and clothing that you have been donating to the people of Camden! It is truly amazing! Please keep in mind that we only accept clothing that is appropriate for the current season, summer clothes for summer months, etc. Also please place the clothing in manageable size bags only. It aids us in being able to transport them more easily. They are always in dire need of men’s clothing and shoes. Please make sure that all donations are in good condition. If you have something that you would like to share, you may leave it on our front porch and we will see that it gets to St. Wilfrid’s clinic! We are located at 223 Highland Terrace, Pitman.
Thanks again, Deacon Carl and Ellie Dunn
Thank God for My Roommate by Alice Aultman
My roommate is a large, furry orange cat. My grandsons named her Cutie when she became part of the family as a kitten. She was born 4/26/02 and was classed as an Orange-Tabby. The family loved her, but then came a dog so I was blessed with the cat. She is overweight, 16+ pounds and according to a feline and human age comparison this equates to 80 years of age. Not being a lap cat one might wonder what the attraction is and why I am so fond of her.
If I come in from errands she greets me with a rub and a purr. She is far from “dumb”. I spend a lot of time on my computer. For some reason she does not like this room and generally stretches out across the doorway. However if she has made a deposit in the litter box or wants more food she will come and look at me with sad eyes. She knows I will service her needs.
Yes, there are some costs involved. Because of her weight and my age I find it difficult to get her to a Vet. There is a “House Paws” service available and I use this in time of need. It has been $400.00 so far this year and that does not include her litter or food. Yet, when she lays up-side down with her 4 feet in the air, purring loudly as we watch the news, I just love her.
Thank God for blessing me with this very special creature that indeed is a great roommate.

DEADLINE
The deadline for the October 2018 Crook will be on September 15, 2018. Please e-mail all articles and pictures to [email protected].

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT PUTTING OUR BELOVED PARISH, GOOD
We have changed our approach for collecting food donations for the Pitman Food Pantry. Each week we will be collecting a different food item. We will announce the upcoming needed food item each week in the trifold. Also we will have a monthly list in the Crook.
All donations are greatly appreciated and accepted.
The Pitman Food Pantry is open on even dated Tuesdays each month from 6pm – 7pm.
Pictures!
Let’s get in the habit of taking pictures of
everything around here! Pictures of Sunday
School, meetings, even of events at services if
you can be surreptitious! Please identify who is in
each photo and what the event is. Thank you!
HEALING PRAYER
Mother Susan is now offering Healing Prayer with anointing and laying on of hands on the first Saturday of every month following the Saturday evening service.
Homecoming Sunday!
We’re starting off with a bang this fall! Everyone
needs a Homecoming celebration. Let’s have one
here!
Maybe, for one reason or another (you may not
even remember why!) you have just not been
attending church for the past few weeks, months,
maybe years. Homecoming Sunday gives you the
opportunity to check us out again! Refresh your
memories of Church of the Good Shepherd.
Reintroduce yourself to the flock! Become
acquainted or better acquainted with our wonderful,
meaningful ministries, both inreach and outreach.
Enjoy the company of your Good Shepherd Family!
On Saturday, September 8, after the 5:30 PM
service, we celebrate Homecoming Eve. On
Sunday, September 9, after the 10 AM service, we
celebrate Homecoming Sunday. Come enjoy hot
dogs and chips, corn on the cob, lemonade and
other treats!
Sunday School!
Sunday School, a thriving happy place at Good
Shepherd, begins Sunday, September 16! Our
classes for children and our youth discussion group
invite young people ages 3 to 17 to participate
during the 10 AM Sunday service. Kids and
teachers join worship for the Eucharist.
Additionally, we also offer several special events
throughout the year. These events often combine
all grade levels as well, giving students of all ages
the opportunity to connect with each other as a
community.
For Pre-school through 7th grade kids we use
Buzz; a highly interactive curriculum which appeals
to various learning styles. Buzz allows our teacher
volunteers to focus on the joy of teaching as each
lesson follows a systematic approach. Our teachers
are parishioner volunteers who lead five week
terms.
We also offer an 8th through 12th grade program.
These students participate in discussions each
Sunday often with members of the
congregation that cover current events and topics
relevant to their lives, helping them to understand
that yes, Jesus is relevant to their lives too!
We also have a staffed and fully furnished
Nursery.
Please Be Considerate of
Our Neighbors!
We are so glad you're here! But when you park near
the church, please be considerate of our neighbors
and make sure you have fully cleared their driveways.
Thank you!

Contemplative Prayer Time
Before Our Worship Services
For those who seek a time for quiet prayer on Saturdays and Sundays, Mother Susan opens the church on Saturdays at 4:30 PM for the 5:30 PM service. We ask that 4:30 PM to 5:15 PM be a quiet prayerful time. Likewise, for Sundays, she will be in the Church at 9 AM for a quiet time from 9 AM to 9:30 AM.
We ask that all who come early to church honor these times as times for quiet prayer and contemplation.
CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER
GROUP
SEPTEMBER CONTEMPLATIVE GROUP will
meet on Wednesday, September 19 at 10 a.m. in
the Conference Room. Jesus told his followers
“when you pray go into your room and shut the
door” and not to “babble like the pagans”.
(Matthew 6:10-11) The homes in Jesus’ time were
one-room dwellings. The room he directed them
to was their interior room and he called them to be
silent. This group is an opportunity to learn how to
do and practice this. We sit in contemplative
silence for 20 minutes which is followed by
teaching and discussion. All are invited.
CHURCH HISTORY DISPLAY Please make sure that you take the time to review the articles in our GS Church History glass case in the parish hall. We are displaying items that help us to see that we have a collective past as a Good Shepherd Family! If you have something to share from our church, pictures, old birth certificates or marriage certificates, old hymnals or Sunday School curriculum, church pins, etc., please let me know and I will make a display. After about 3 months, your items will be returned to you in good condition – I promise!
Thanks so much! Ellie Dunn
