MIAMI MARLINS (52-77) RHP Tom Koehler (8-12, 3.98) at WASHINGTON NATIONALS (64-63) RHP Jordan Zimmermann (10-8, 3.54) NATIONALS PARK, WASHINGTON, DC Saturday, August 29, 2015 – 7:05 P.M. FISH BITES Miami continues a six-game road trip and three-game series against Washington with game two tonight at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Tom Koehler, looking to snap a career-long six-game skid, is making his ninth career start and appear- ance against the Nationals, with a 3-5 record and 4.28 ERA (48.1 ip/23 er). He will go against RHP Jordan Zimmermann, who in 20 career starts versus the Fish has gone 7-4 with 3.28 ERA (123.1/45). Miami’s road swing will continue to Atlanta following tomorrow afternoon’s contest, as the Marlins will take on the Braves in a three-game series from Monday- Wednesday. Miami is coming off of an eight-game homestand against Philadelphia (1-3) and Pittsburgh (1-3) and has gone 9-9 over its last 18 contests. Following this trip, the Fish will entertain the Mets (Sept. 4-6), Brewers (Sept. 7-9) and Nationals (Sept. 11-13) in a nine-game homestand, their second to last homestand of the season. VS. THE NATIONALS Miami leads the season series, 6-4; it is the Club’s only winning record against an NL East rival this season. The Fish main- tain that edge despite dropping two of the last three against Washington. Miami leads the all-time series, 195-169, and holds a slim 91-88 advantage in road contests (47-47 since move to DC, 35-32 at Nationals Park). LAST NIGHT Martin Prado and Marcell Ozuna powered the Marlins past the Nationals, 4-3. With two outs in the first, Prado singled to center field and scored on Derek Dietrich’s double to give Miami a 1-0 lead. After Washington tied the game at 1-1 in the second, Prado proved clutch in the third, connecting for his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field. With Miami leading 3-1 after three, Ozuna led off the fourth with his seventh home run of the year. Following Ozuna’s blast, Miami’s next 17 batters were retired in order before Ozuna doubled with two outs in the ninth. Adam Conley (2-1) came away with the win, allowing three runs on six hits (two home runs) and one walk while striking out six in 5.0+ innings. Kyle Barraclough entered a bases loaded-no out situation in the sixth and allowed just one run to score. Bryan Morris, Mike Dunn and A.J. Ramos followed with 3.0 scoreless frames. TOMMY QUALITY Tom Koehler leads the Marlins starting rotation and ranks T-22 nd among NL starters with 15 quality starts, going 7-6 with a 1.76 ERA in those starts. However, his six losses in quality starts is tied with Max Scherzer for third-most in the Majors, behind Andrew Cashner (7) and Jose Quintana (7). - Stats LLC TRIP AWAY Miami leads the Majors in triples this month, with 12, ahead of Pittsburgh (11), Detroit (10), and Cubs (9). The last time the Marlins led the Majors in triples for a calendar month (excluding March & October) was May 2013, when they had nine. Six Marlins’ players have recorded a three-bagger this month, led by Dee Gordon, Adeiny Hechavarria, and Ichiro Suzuki with three apiece, and followed by Derek Dietrich (1), Cole Gillespie (1), and J.T. Realmuto (1). The 12 triples are tied for the second-most in a month in Club history (see full list at right). PRESSURE COOKER Dee Gordon is second in the Majors in overall batting average at .332, behind Bryce Harper (.334), but leads all MLB hitters in average with two outs at .423 (52x123). Lorenzo Cain ranks second at .394 (56x142), followed by Paul Gold- schmidt (.376; 68x181), David Peralta (.371; 52x140) and Buster Posey (.370; 57x154). Gordon’s two-out average would mark the highest single-season mark in Marlins history, besting current leader Hanley Ramirez, who posted a .403 mark (91x226) in 2009. NOT BACKING DOWN Washington’s trio of Max Scherzer, Jordan Zimmermann and Stephen Strasburg has made eight combined starts against Miami this season, and the Marlins have tallied five wins while batting a combined .276 (51x185) against them. Against all other pitchers, the Fish are batting .264 (38x144). Martin Prado has led the charge, batting .417 (10x24) against the three, while Dee Gordon has followed closely with a .348 (8x23) mark. LIKE A FINE WINE Ichiro Suzuki has accumulated 2,923 Major League hits, all of which have come after turning 27 years old. Only one player, MLB all-time hits leader Pete Rose (3,353), has tallied more hits after turning 27. Sam Rice is tied with Ichiro for second, followed by Cap Anson (2,818) and Honus Wagner (2,769). - Stats LLC GETTING ON Martin Prado has reached base safely in 23 of 24 games played since August 2, batting .289 (26x90) with a .352 on-base percentage in that time. During that run, he recorded a 16-game streak of reaching base (Aug. 2-20), which was the third-longest streak of the season for Miami, behind a 24-game run for Christian Yelich (June 26-July 25) and an 18-game streak by Prado (April 19-May 9). Prado is now batting .370 (10x27) during a seven-game hitting streak. A FEW MORE MILESTONES Ichiro Suzuki, who Tuesday night reached 10,000 MLB plate appearances in his first at-bat, has a few more career milestones on the horizon. He needs just two more runs scored to reach 2,000 for his career between MLB (1,340) and Japan (658). He has 114 career triples between MLB (91) and Japan (23), one shy of tying Yutaka Fukumoto for the most career triples by a Japanese player. Lastly, Ichiro has 2,923 career Major League hits, four away from tying Al Simmons (2,927) for 37 th on MLB’s all-time list. MARLINS VS.
