The National Trust, in association with Todhunter, designers of bespoke food gifts and hampers, are delighted to launch their collection of Baskets and Picnic Hampers.

Each gift has been individually selected and inspired by the National Trust’s unique heritage, conserving special places across the nation for ever, for everyone.

The National Trust is one of Britain’s most trusted brands and these unique gifts are designed to reflect the Trust’s core values, celebrating everything that they work so hard to deliver to their 4.8 million members. With over 36 million visits each year, this collection is designed to conjure up special memories from a family day out, picnics by the lake or a romantic stroll through the countryside of some of England’s most beautiful and historical landscapes and buildings.

Our Surface Pattern

At Todhunter we begin the seasonal design process by taking inspiration from every aspect of the National Trust, from elegant textiles found in historic country houses, to the raw beauty of textures and colours provided by Mother Nature.

For 2017 we feel our collection needs something distinctive to truly imbue the spirit of the National Trust. When picnickers open their hampers – whether it be on a windswept beach or at a country celebration – we want them to feel a personal connection to the Trust, and that is why we have invited illustrator Holly Black to create a exclusive surface pattern to be used in the detailing of our products.

Holly is directly inspired by nature, she sketches on site before drawing all of her patterns by hand, in order to truly capture the spirit of the great outdoors. For this collection she has studied the naturally occurring colours found in the woodland to create a beautiful surface pattern that captures the spirit of the countryside and works seamlessly with the Trust’s aesthetic ethos. This collection is inspired by Warren Hill, an enchanting woodland in the Sussex countryside, donated to the National Trust by Mrs A B Lloyd to preserve the quiet paths, green open spaces and flourishing wildlife against further quarrying.

Whether you are taking a country stroll or embarking on a heart-pumping family adventure, this charming woodland is rich in nature, with rabbits hopping along the open lawns and cattle occasionally grazing on the common.

This delightful site was a favourite spot throughout Holly’s childhood, with fallen trees and undergrowth offering the perfect opportunity to build dens and play a game of hide and seek, with mud-soaked dog running alongside!

But her beloved spot was always under the shelter of a beautiful oak tree, which offered refuge for camp as a shady escape in the summer and a warming retreat complete with blankets and cocoa as the days drew in.

While taking a well-earned break from all of the countryside activities Holly would often look up into the beautiful canopy formed by the tree, and this is what inspires our oak leaf pattern. Throughout the seasons both the diffusion of light and the ever-changing colours of the foliage creates a beautiful palette that can only be found in nature.

The Warren Hill Collection

The Oak LeafThis is where our surface pattern story all began, sitting under this peaceful tree in Warren Hill with leaves rustling, birds chirping and a light breeze. How can you not be inspired with all this beautiful scenery surrounding you?
