Is Spring Finally Here?

With such active weather, it?s hard to tell whether spring has really arrived. That said, the most-frequently advertised items this week were warmer weather favorites, such as watermelons, cucumbers, soft squash, cantaloupes, sweet corn, strawberries, tomatoes, baby-cut carrots, and mangoes. Chilean stone fruit has all but disappeared, leaving space in the produce department for more pineapples and blackberries, which we also heavily promoted. Colored bell peppers, potatoes, and onions continued their steady presence.

Total ad numbers this week were 397,302, a 1% decrease from last week?s 401,994. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 202,068 (51% of all ads), onions and potatoes 32,747 (8%), vegetables 156,892 (40%), herbs 2,831, and ornamentals 2,494. The number of ads for organic produce was 56,563, 14% of total ads.

The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus stores) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit items this week included mini seedless watermelons at 22% and raspberries at 14%. Significant decreases included D?anjou pears at 20%, avocadoes at 18%, red seedless grapes at 14%, blackberries at 13%, and Fuji apples at 11%.
