mmdlum I a v o Wmandorln#s 8 My apologies to M t &nry for inoorrectly listing his logging of WICE-550 (V55-14) as WINK. Don't knou what happned, Kermit. Must have been a glitch. Thanks to Jdn Micky, I nou have an official 16 W K O V.I.P. cord. Nou ask yourself, what have you done for your editor lately? Hou 'bout mailing him some DX?? That uould make his day. 8 -1 reports Service Merchandise no longer has the Superadio in the big catalog. Is it doomed? Dunno. Dave. I've got mine, and glad of it! 8 Several wntributors have asked me to print the "transit time" of their letters. So, for a fa, weeks I'll include the postmark date, follovej by the date the letter arrives immediately after your name in the "credits" section of the oolumn. This will give you an idea of when you have to mail your reports to get them here by Saturday's mail. Don't forget the December 1st address change! 8 A neu abbreviation has crept into DDXEE. Since ve just passed an election, and kind of a big one is nou less than a year away, I'm sure ve'll hear lots of POL (political) ads. It's shovtime.. .

Degraded stereo reception Motorr?la's AM Stereo Broadcasting

Manager C h n s I'ayne noted that uslng the C-QLAM pdot tone wlth Kahn trans- mission equipment would result in degraded stereo reception

Because the tone also illum~nates the stereo light on recewers, Payne was con- cerned that listeners m ~ g h t be m ~ s l e d into t h i h g that a C-QUAM station was performing unsatisfactorily

Payne sald his company has "worked to build C-QUAM AM stereo transmis- slon and reception equipment of the highest technical quality:'

' W h e n someone causes our receiver to come u p In stereo decoding an incorrect transmisslon, the sound is nowhere near what the system IS designed to do," I'ayne commented The reproduced ste- reo signal would lack true spatlal orien- tatlon, he said. and would sound "smeared "

The result rvould be unnecessary ex^

pense Incurred by the consumer, the re- ceiver manufacturer a n d Motorola, "for an exerclse which 1s basically inval~d," he added.

Payne s a d a listener's introduction to AM stereo "ought to be a dramatic and impressive change" from the perfor- mance the consumer was used to In monophomc AM He sald such a change would not be poss~ble ~f a Motorola re^

celver was decoding a Kahn t ransmis~ sion.

Use of o n e pilot tone w ~ t h a different stereo system is a n "ektremely self- defeating t h ~ n g to do," Paync continued He stressed the practice was not In the self~intrrust of the statlon, the best in^ terest of the consumer o r the industry.

Payne decl ined to comment o n whether Motorola would pursue the matter any further.

Legalities uncertain The l e g a l ~ t ~ e s of the practice by WSYR
