How it All Started
• In 1999, the Senate passed a resolution that designates the month of May to become National Military Appreciation Month.
• During the month, there are many ways that the military is recognized.
Public Service Recognition Week
• Normally observed during the first full week of May since 1985, Public Service Recognition Week honors those that serve the United States as federal, state, county and local government employees.
• The week also helps educate those about the ways in which the government helps serve United States citizens.
Armed Forces Day
• Since 1949, Armed Forces Day has always been celebrated on the third Saturday of every May.
• It is a day where the United States is encouraged to honor those that are in the United States Armed Forces.
Memorial Day
• Military Appreciation Month culminates with Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May.
• Dating back to the Civil War era, Memorial Day is dedicated to remembering those who died in service to the nation.
