Today’s Supply Chains must embrace ‘design thinking’ Principles if optional performance is to be achieved. They key focus must always be “outside-in”. Sound Logistics forms the foundation for the development of strategic flexibility and the line between disorder and order lies in logistics.
Nigeria is at a cross road now because of the sustained losses in projected revenue following drop in world oil prices. The global tendency towards a diversified export-based economy and the urgent need to expedite the process of economic growth and development underscores the imperative of a national logistics strategy. For any economy, the logistics sector, encompassing transportation, warehousing, cargo consolidation and border clearances, would form the backbone of its global competetiveness. The cost of trading whether by sea, land or air forms a critical component of the final price of a
commodity. An efficient logistics system reduces this cost, provides a competitive edge and propels economic development. The current stress on the logistics system and its performance suggests the need for a National Strategy Platform.
African Centre for Supply Chain in collaboration with Multimix Academy is putting this summit together as contribution to national development after researching into the state of logistics and supply chain in Nigeria. The programme is bringing together major stakeholders as part of the process of commencing a national Logistics strategy for effective exploitation of our vast economic potentials.
INTRODUCTION
“if you cannot describe what you are doing as a process, you do not know what you are doing”.
- W. Edwards Deming
For Nigeria to grow its market share of various products in the global market, the supply chains need to be World Class. These and other aspects of the logistics environment in Nigeria are presented and major issues affecting logistics costs are discussed. In addition, reference is made to the recent World Bank report on logistics performance index as it affects competitiveness.
The primary purpose of this Industry Report is the provision of a comprehensive picture of the state of logistics and supply chain operations in Nigeria from macro and micro-economic perspectives. The macro-economic perspectives centres on the general economic performance of the logistics services, the nature and structure of competition within the industry, the demand structure for the industry’s output/services, the logistics and supply chain market and interdependencies at the regional and national levels, impact evaluation of specific public sector interventions (or the absence of same) on the industry, identification of gaps necessary for the improvements in the state of logistic infrastructure and associated needs that will engender low logistic cost, improved delivery time and effective freight handling. On the other hand, the micro-economic perspective examines firms and industry-specific developments.
