1. INTRODUCTION
The National Institute of Technology Puducherry, located at Karaikal was established
under the Eleventh Five Year Plan & is one among the ten new NITs incepted in 2009-10. The
Institute is a fast growing educational institution of Technical education, Research and Higher
Learning under the Ministry of Human Resource Development Government of India, New Delhi.

Following the directives for the establishment of New NITs, such as minimum of 300
acres of Land, Road, Water Supply, Electricity etc, the Government of Union Territory of
Puducherry has identified the land in Poovam and Thiruvetakudy village at Karaikal due to its
prime location and industrial background. Initially up to December 2011, the National Institute
of Technology, Puducherry at Karaikal was mentored by the NIT, Tiruchirappalli (as appointed
by MHRD, Government of India, New Delhi). The Institute is functioning from its transit campus
situated at Arignar Anna Govt. Arts and Science College Campus, Nehru Nagar at Karaikal.

2. LOCATION
The Union Territory of Puducherry is constituted out of the four erstwhile French
establishments of Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. Karaikal region is embedded in the
Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur Districts of Tamil Nadu state. Karaikal is well connected by Road
network, 320 KM from Chennai, 130 KM from Puducherry, 16 KM from Nagapattinam and 160
KM from Tiruchirappalli. Also, it is connected by Rail from Ernakulum, Chennai, Velankanni,
Bangalore, Mumbai and construction of Airport at Nedungadu is in progress.
In and around Karaikal, there are many important pilgrim places of Shiva and Vaishnava
temples situated which are all recorded in the holy books of Nayanmars and Alwars. Thirunallar
Saniswar Temple and Karaikal Ammaiyar Temple, Velakanni Church and Nagore Dargarh are
some of the notable pilgrim centers.

Apart from the Pilgrim centers, Karaikal Port, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation and many
large and medium scale industries like Johnson Ceramic Tiles Industry, Henkel Chemical
Industry etc. plays vital role for the selection of the location. Karaikal has number of English
Medium and Tamil Medium private schools, Matriculation Schools etc. Apart from that
Kendriya Vidyalaya, Navodhaya School, Government Polytechnic, Industrial Training School
etc. are also available. Arignar Anna Govt. Arts & Science College, Avvaiyar Govt. College
for Women, Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Institute of Technology( Govt. Engg. College), Pandit
Jawaharlal Nehru Agricultural College (Govt. Agri. College), Perunthalaivar Kamarajar
College of Education (B. Ed. College), Two Self Financing Engg. Colleges, one private
Medical College etc., make Karaikal as education centre. Above said facilities made the
Govt. of Puducherry to select Karaikal as an apt place for the National Institute of
Technology Puducherry.
A four member team formed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development,
New Delhi visited the site and accorded approval in 2010 and subsequently by expert from
Educational Consultant India Ltd (EdCIL), Government of India Undertaking at Noida
inspected the place. A land of area of 256.59 acres given by Government of Puducherry has
scenic beauty of sea shore on eastern side and several water canals passing through. The
presence of water bodies and greenery in the area provides pollution free and Eco-friendly
atmosphere, an apt place to establish an Educational Institution.
2.1 REGISTRATION
Initially, the Institute was registered as Society under Societies Registration Act
1860 with the Registrar of Companies, Puducherry on 25.3.2010 vide registration No.
134/2010 during March 2010 with members from Govt. of Puducherry, Ministry of Human
Resource Development, New Delhi and Mentor Institute.
In the year 2012-13, the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource
Development, Dept. of Higher Education, New Delhi have brought all the ten new National
Institute of Technology formed during 2009-10 under the National Institute of Technology
Act, 2007( 29 of 2007) passed by Parliament by NIT (Amendment) Act 2012 ( 28 of 2012)
on 7th June 2012. This has been communicated by the Ministry vide its letter no. F.33-
8/2012-TS III dated 12.11.2012.
3. ADMINISTRATION

3.1 BOARD OF GOVERNORS
The Chairman Dr. Baldev Raj - a distinguished Scientist (published 700 research papers in leading
International and National Journals, authored 42 books, delivered more than 300 honor,
planetary keynotes and invited lectures etc.), Awardee of Padma Shri, Prof. Brham Prakash
memorial Medal Of INSA 2013, 1st Dr. Homi J. Bhabha Centenary Year Award etc.,
President of Indian National Academy of Engineering, Director (Retd.) Indira Gandhi Center
for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, President Research PSG Institutions, Fellow of The Third
World Academy of Sciences etc., Member of the German National Academy of Science etc.,
- was appointed as the First Chairman, Board of Governors of National Institute of
Technology Puducherry by Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource
Development, New Delhi with the approval of the Visitor (MHRD letter No. F.23-19/2010-
TS II (Pt) Dated 5.1.2011).
The Director Dr. (Mrs.) Shashi Krishna Pandey, Professor, Chemical Engineering Department, NIT
Tiruchirappalli - having more than 40 years of experience in Teaching and Research
(Published more than 125 papers in referred International, National Journals and
Conferences, guided four Ph. Ds), received several awards such as Tamil Nadu Woman
Scientist Award for Engineering and Technology for the year 1999-2000. She was the First
Director of NIT Srinagar (J & K) during 2003 – 2005, First regular Director, SLIET, Longowal,
Punjab (Govt. of India, MHRD funded Institution) Deemed to be University (2006-2008),
Director of NIT, Raipur ( 2008-2011) – was selected by the Ministry of Human Resource
Development, New Delhi, as Director of the NIT Puducherry at Karaikal as first regular
Director.
Dr. (Mrs.) S. K. Pandey has joined National Institute of Technology Puducherry on
16.12.2011 F.N. and continued during the year under report. The Govt. of India, Ministry of
Human Resource Development, Dept. of Higher Education, New Delhi, had issued order for
the constitution of the Board as per NIT Act 2007 and communicated the same in their
letter no.F28-37/2012-TS III dated 8.11.2012. As per NIT Act 2007, the Board of Governors
was constituted and the following are the members of the BoG:

The board approved the minutes of the 8th BWC minutes with the major points as
follows:
1. The main entrance with French architecture.
2. The drawings for the departments EEE, CSE and ECE submitted by
CPWD are approved to PE by the committee with in-situ minor
modifications.
3. Approval for the administrative block drawing in principle, the present
drawing for the preparation of P.E.
4. Approval for the preliminary estimate of the multipurpose hall by EEC
and its discussion in BWC.
5. Approval for alternate block of land for the construction of girl’s
hostel.
6. Adoption of central public works department schedule rate for
maintenance works.
7. Bulk services such as electrical sub-station, over head water storage
tank, underground sump, rain water storm, rain water harvesting,
drainage systems have to be addressed by CPWD at a faster rate.
8. GRIHA rating is required for the buildings.

3.2 SENATE The National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (Mentor institute) Senate was adopted as Senate for the NIT Puducherry also till the Institute was brought under NIT Act 2007. 3.4 BUILDING AND WORKS COMMITTEE
During the year under report, three meetings of Building and works
committee held on 17th April 2014, 29th Sep 2014 and 27 March 2015. The Committee
approved the following major points are as follows:
Preliminary estimate of Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and
Communication Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering has been approved.
Approval for the detailed estimate of compound wall, science block, Guest House,
Girls Hostel, Boys Hostel, Professor Quarters, Director’s Bungalow, Multipurpose Hall and
for development works
4. ACADEMICS
4.1 COURSES OFFERED
National Institute of Technology Puducherry offers UG course in three circuit branches since its inception and has now introduced Doctoral Programme from the February session – 2014. The following Courses were offered during the year under report:

Ph. D. SCHOLARSHIP
The National Institute of Technology Puducherry announced to provide
financial support/ scholarship to a few full time research scholars who are not receiving
any financial support/ scholarship from other Agencies or State or Central Governments.
They are required to assist the Department in the academic work for at
least 8 hours per week as per guidelines issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and
Development, Govt. of India, in addition to satisfying other conditions for the award
/renewal of the fellowship.

4.3 ADMISSION
Similar to other National Institutes of Technology in the country, the
admission for the Under Graduate courses was made based on the Joint Engg. Entrance
Examination – Central Seat Allocation Board- 2014 (JEE-CSAB) rank basis.
The National Institute of Technology Puducherry has also been identified
as one of the Help Center and Reporting Center by the JEE – CSAB during 2013-14.
During the year under report, 112 students joined at National Institute of
Technology Puducherry under UG Courses and 10 students joined under PG courses.

As per Item No.7.5 (ii) of the minutes recorded in the seventh meeting of the
Council of NITs, it is recommended to engage top 15% meritorious students from NITs and

other CFTIs as trainee teacher at NIT after due selection at NITs, including their selection
for M. Tech-cum-Ph. D programme by IITs based on the prospective faculty requirement
plan for next five years depending upon current vacancies, projected growth, retirements
and expected resignations.

6.7 MESS & TRANSPORT FACILITIES
The distance of each hostel ranges from 2 to 5kms from temporary campus
of the Institute. Hence arrangements were made for the boarding facilities through
outsourcing private caterers. Transport arrangements were also made on contract basis for
pick up and drop of the students from hostels by inviting open tenders.
Boarding facilities were provided through a private catering firm to serve
Breakfast, Lunch, Evening snacks and Dinner per student. Except holidays, the caterer will
provide Break Fast and Lunch at the Institute, snacks and Dinner at the hostels.
Similarly, transport facilities were provided through a private transport
firm for the students for pick up and drop to students. In addition for laboratory trips to
PKIET, Hospital trips are also covered within the same
6.8 MEDICAL FACILITIES A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on 5th July, 2013 with the
Medical Director, Vinayaka Mission’s Medical College, Karaikal to provide cashless &
Hassle-free treatment facilities to the students, faculty, staff and their family of National
Institute of Technology-Puducherry as per Govt. of India, medical attendance rules
through their hospital.
7. FUNCTIONS AND EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES 7.1 INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION
Independence Day Celebration was organized on 15th August 2014 at NIT
Puducherry (Aringar Anna Arts & Science College), Karaikal and the function was presided
by the Director of NIT Puducherry. Function begins with the official parade to the Direct
proceed with Flag hoisting followed by National Anthem. Independence Day Official
address was given by the Director relating to the future plan and the declaration to
honoring the achievement of various faculty and student for their contribution in academic
and research activities during the academic year 2014.

Subsequently the culture programs were performed by the NIT students, starting with
traditional South Indian Bharatnatyam performance, Solo Song, Group Dance, Group Singing
and Short Drama.
In order to encourage and motivate the students in extracurricular activities in specific
to sports and games, winner of various competitions were honored with a trophy and
certificates by the Director.
Finally, the Dr. S. Babu (S. A. Sport Officer) delivered his vote of thanks to the Director
in particular for her continuous encouragement and support to conduct the event, and also he
extended his heartfelt thanks to various Committee Members, Faculties, Staffs and Students for
conducting the function a great success at NIT Puducherry.
7.2 GANDHI JAYANTHI CELEBRATION

The students of NIT Puducherry celebrated the Gandhi Jayanti. Dr. (Mrs.) S. K. Pandey,
Director, NIT Puducherry lighted the lamp and the function was inaugurated. Students & Staff
delivered lecture on Gandhian thought and also sang patriotic songs.
7.3 REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATION
Republic Day Celebration was organized on 26th January 2015 at NIT-Puducherry
(Aringar Anna Arts & Science College), Karaikal and the function was presided by the Professor
Dr.Aghila of NIT-Puducherry. Function begins with the official parade to the Direct proceed with
Flag hoisting followed by National Anthem. Republic Day Official address was given by the HOD
relating to the Republic of India.
Subsequently the culture programs were performed by the NIT students, starting with
Prayer song, Group Dance, Solo Song, Group Singing and Short Drama. Finally, the
Dr.Smruthisikta Mishra delivered vote of thanks to the Director and the various Committee
Members, Faculties, Staffs and Students for conducting the function a grant success at NIT-
Puducherry.

7.4 SPORTS DAY CELEBRATION
NIT Puducherry celebrated Sports Day for the academic year 2014-2015 on 21st March
2015 at NIT Puducherry (Arignar Anna Arts & Science College campus), Karaikal. The function
was presided by Mr..S.N.Singh, ONGC Asset Manager, Neravy, Karaikal. The function began with
the welcome address followed by the presidential address by the Chief Guest.

In order to encourage and motivate the students in sports and games, eight
games(cricket, football, volleyball, shuttle badminton for men and women, throw ball and chess
for men and women), eight athletic events and three faculty events were organized. The
winners of various competitions were honored with trophies and certificates by the Director
and the chief guest.
Finally, Ms. Dharani, the Student Sports Secretary, delivered her vote of thanks, thanking the Director for her encouragement and support. 7.6 Women's Cell activities & WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATION A talk on “Empowering women” was delivered by Ms. Preethi, Asst. Prof. Dept.
of CSE on 19.11.2014 followed by a mime play by students on the theme: “Women harassment-
Past and present”. A debate competition was held on the topic “Are women of today living the
vision of women of yesterday”. The theme of the drawing competition was “Dream- India to be
the world power”. Women's day was celebrated on 09.3.2015 with Dr. Annie Juliet CMO as
Chief Guest.
7.7 STUDENT SYMPOSIUM NIT Puducherry has organized a 2 days student's symposium in each
department viz. KNOSYS (30.1.2015 to 01.02.2015) in the Dept of CSE, TARANGG (05.3.2015 to
07.3.2015) in the Dept of ECE & SPREEE (13.3.2015) in the Dept of EEE. Guest lecturers have
been invited along with other activities such as workshops, seminars etc.
7.8 Celebration of Engineers day on September 15, 2014. Engineers Day has been celebrated on 15th September 2014. Cultural programs have
been organized by the students at this occasion and importance of engineers in development of
country was highlighted.
7.9 Swachh Bharat Abhiyan On the nationwide call of Prime minister, NIT Puducherry has also joined in
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Launched on 2nd October, the memorable day of Gandhi Jayanti.
Although the institute cares about the cleanliness on daily life, yet students and Faculty took a
pledge on this occasion and cleaned the area near dining hall as a commencement of the
'Abhiyan'.
7.10 Launch of Institute magazine 'IGNITE'

The literary club of the institute has launched the institute Magazine 'IGNITE'. Many
students and faculty have contributed to make it a success. It was released by the director on
the occasion of Independence Day.
7.11 Celebration of First Hindi Saptah The institute has celebrated HINDI SAPTAH for the first time from 12th to 18th
September 2014. On this occasion, the ONGC Asset Manager Shri Shiv Charan Singh was invited
as chief guest. Various cultural programmes, speeches, recitation, events, games, quizes were
organized. Also, Programs for the family and kids of the NIT employees were conducted. Prizes
and certificates have also been giv
en for Essay writing and other events.
7.12 Blood Donation Camp A blood donation camp was organized on 05.11.2014 jointly by NIT Puducherry and
JIPMER at NIT Puducherry campus in which 72 units of blood was collected from faculty staff
and students.

7.13 Activities under NSS NSS students collected Rs. 8450/- towards the victims of massive flood at J&K. National
Unity day was celebrated on 31.10.2014 with a road rally along the streets of Karaikal town.
Documentary based on Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel’s contribution to build the nation was
screened.
7.14 1ST CONVOCATION The first convocation of NIT Puducherry was held on 6th December 2014. In this
occasion Dr. Dr. Apathukatha Sivathanu Pillai, Former Scientist & Chief controller, Research &
Development, DRDO and Founder CEO and MD of BrahMos Aerospace graced the occasion as
Chief Guest. The function was presided over by Dr. Mrs. S. K. Pandey- Director NIT Puducherry
in the august presence of Dr. Baldev Raj, Chairman Board of Governors. The senate members
were also present for the distribution of certificates and gold medals. Most of the graduands
along with their parents were also present to receive the degree certificates. The program was
also live telecast through a link in the institute website. The declaration of the commencement
of convocation was announced by the Chairman, Board of Governors, Dr. Baldev Raj. The
welcome address was given by Dr. Mrs. S. K. Pandey followed by the report on the institute.
The degrees were awarded by the chairperson senate and the gold medals by the Chairman,
Board of Governors, Dr. Baldev Raj and the Chief Guest. The pledge was administered by Dr.
Baldev Raj followed by his address to the graduands. The chief guest lecture was also very
motivating with full of morals. The departmental gold medals were awarded to Aastikta Sharma
-Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Buddi Sai Srujana- Department of
Electronics and Communication Engineering and Pranjal Pragya Verma- Department of
Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The overall topper of the institute was awarded to
Pranjal Pragya Verma- Department of Electrical And Electronics Engineering. The closing of the
convocation was declared by the chairman followed by lunch.

11. ACCOUNTS
The annual accounts of the institution for 2014-15 were prepared in the revised
format of accounts prescribed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The audit
of accounts was conducted by the Director General of Audit (Central), Chennai during
September-October 2015. The annual accounts and the audit certificate were annexed to
this report.
