NEW HORIZONS

1. Project AMMA: Comprehensive Oral Healthcare Program for the Elderly

Mobile Dental Clinic Project has initiated a newer horizon for Geriatric Oral Health Care:

Project “AMMA”:Comprehensive Oral Healthcare Program for the Elderly. The program has

been initiated with collaboration with Department of Social Security which supervises old age

homes (Dept. Of Social Welfare) under GNCTD for further coordination and organizing various

activities.

The Project’s activities include:

1. Oral health Screening at Old Age Homes and Senior Citizen’s recreation centres

2. Oral Health Promotion Activities like health education & Tooth brushing demonstration.

3. Referral for dental treatment services.

In the month of September 2019, we conducted a Geriatric Oral Health Camp on 25th September

at Mata Pita Samman Sewa Trust Recreation Centre, Ayanagar, Chhatarpur (South Delhi). A

team of NHM staff consisting of Dr. Swati Jain, Dr. Neha Gangil, Paramedics and Driver

conducted the camp, providing dental screening services and oral health educational activities.

In total 43 patients were screened and referred for dental services. The program was highly

commended and was also covered in 04 local dailies. It has been a huge achievement for the

Mobile Dental Clinic Project.

2. ASHA Humari Muskan 24/09/19 at RBTB Hospital: Under the ongoing ASHA Training Program, to boost the services under continuous

initiatives, the Mobile Dental Clinic Project put another feather in its cap through the initiative:

ASHA HAMARI MUSKAAN.

This initiative has intended to screen and treat ASHA workers who have been trained

under the program and also to provide dental services to their family members. The “ASHA

HUMARI MUSKAAN” initiative targets the Maternal and Child Oral Health in Delhi through

ASHAworkers acting as our grass root soldiers.

The project has gone a step ahead by developing avery unique way of incentivizing

ASHA workers through a Family Program wherein oralhealth screening and treatment services

are provided only to ASHA workers attending thetraining session on oral health showcasing their

interest and their family members on adesignated date. One such camp was conducted in RBTB

Hospital at Civil Lines on 24/09/2019, benefitting 69 patients under the camp.

17

3. IEC Material Dissemination (Central and East Districts of Delhi) Mobile Dental Clinic Project has developed various IEC material to educate and disseminate

knowledge regarding oral health to be displayed at various health facilities. Various posters and

pamphlets have been developed in local language for easy understanding of the public.

Two posters per dispensary were disseminated on the topic:

a. “Maukhik Swaathya ke Teen Niyam”(03 golden tips for Good Oral Health)

b. “Swasth Mukh Swasth Garbhaavastha” (Healthy Mouth Healthy Pregnancy)

In this regard, IEC Material were disseminated to the entire East District of Delhi, consisting of

32 sets, one for each dispensary.

4. Lecture on Qualitative Research by Dr. Swati Jain on 07/09/2019 Dr. Swati Jain, Consultant, Mobile Dental Clinic Project, presented a powerpoint

presentation on ‘Qualitative research’. Qualitative research is an important component which

could be applicable in the ongoing program to improve the oral healthcare delivery in the

Page 18: NATIONAL HEALTH MISSION MOBILE DENTAL CLINIC PROJECTmaids.ac.in/September-2019 monthly report.pdf · 2019. 10. 15. · 3 The ‘MOBILE DENTAL CLINIC PROJECT’ The Mobile Dental Clinic

18

existing system. Qualitative research is a scientific method of observation to gather non-

numerical data.

This type of research “refers to the meanings, concepts definitions, characteristics,

metaphors, symbols, and description of things” and not to their “counts or measures”. t is used to

gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into

the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research.

5. Group Activity, organized by Dr. Nishtha A group activity was conducted called “Glass Stack” by Dr. Nishtha Sri Saini on

26/09/2019 with an aim to imporive the communication, trust and other communication skills

among the team members of the Mobile Dental Clinic Project (Doctors, Paramedics, Drivers and

Other support staff).

This was a simple but meaningful activity that sets the tone for an event and it also

helped in unearthing innovative ideas and showed the diversity of opinion within a team. This

activity encouraged staff members with unconventional views who otherwise wont speakup to

participants.

19

6. Oral Potentially Malignant Cases in the Community The Mobile Dental Clinic Project has taken an advanced step of identifying Oral

Potentially Malignant Lesions in the field through a Mobile-based online data collection app,

EpiCollect5. EpiCollect is a tool (android and iOS app) which could be used at the field for data

collection.

The patient contact details were noted who

were suspected of having any lesion in the oral

cavity and a chronic tobacco use history. This

patient was then called personally for follow-up

and recall at the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental

Sciences for further biopsy, confirmatory diagnosis

and treatment.

In the month of September, 12 patients

reported with Oral Potentially Malginant Disorders,

and they were called a total of 03 times for further

visit to MAIDS. However, two patients turned up at

the institute, and got its diagnosis completed and

treatment initiated.

Out of rest 10 patients, 05 Declined to visit

owing to their daily wages, 03 agreed but did not

turn up and 02 were unreachable through their provided contact numbers.

7. Field Visits by Consultant Starting July 2019, the two consultants employed under the Project, Dr. Swati Jain and

Dr. Shekhar Grover have been given the additional charge of conducting individual field visits

and supervising the on-going routine activities of the vans every alternate day.

Page 20: NATIONAL HEALTH MISSION MOBILE DENTAL CLINIC PROJECTmaids.ac.in/September-2019 monthly report.pdf · 2019. 10. 15. · 3 The ‘MOBILE DENTAL CLINIC PROJECT’ The Mobile Dental Clinic

20

The field visit of the consultants was initiated keeping in mind the increasing demand of

dental health care service by the target population, and to ensure the smooth conduction of the

rotuine activities at the point of care. Also, consultants were directed to meet the respective

authorities at the dispensaries to enhance collaborative activities and tackling minor problems, if

any, ancountered by the dispensary staff.
