Brian Skerry

Brian Skerry is a photojournalist specializing in marine wildlife and underwater environments. He has spent more than 10,000 hours underwater! His uniquely creative images tell stories that not only celebrate the mystery and beauty of the sea, but also help bring attention to the large number of issues that endanger our oceans and its inhabitants. His nearly year-round assignment schedule frequently finds him in environments of extreme contrast from tropical coral reefs to diving beneath polar ice. Brian Skerry is passionate about conservation.

ConservationConservation—preservation, protection, or restoration of the natural environment, natural ecosystems, vegetation, and wildlife.

• What are we protecting the environment from?

• It might sound funny but we are saving the environment from the effects of humans

• Buildings, cars, planes, and other parts of our daily lives can disrupt and even hurt animals

• Conservation helps to combat and reverse these effects

• Why should we care?

• Each animal, plant, and species is special and a unique and crucial part of every ecosystem

• Some of these species are going extinct, taking one out messes with the whole system!

• What can I do?

• Learn more! Do research

• Live sustainably: don’t litter, do recycle, and turn of the lights/electronics!

• Get involved: see what ways in your school and community you can help

Ocean Connections

• Brainstorm Connections to the ocean

• What do we eat that comes from the ocean? What do we use?

• Vacations?

• What else?

• What do we do that effects the ocean?

• Determine the sources

• Have students determine which of these things originate with people and which with the ocean

• Connect

• Draw lines between these things to explore how we as people are connected to the ocean, how the ocean is connected to us, and what that means

• Discuss

Matters

Why the Ocean Matters Video

Covering 72 percent of the Earth and supplying half its oxygen, the ocean is our planet's life support system—and it’s in danger. Watch this video to learn why a healthier ocean means a healthier planet, and find out how you can help.

Ocean EcosystemsThe ocean ecosystem is dividing into three zones or layers based on how much sunlight it receives.

• Top Layer: Euphotic Zone; receives most light and where most plants and animals live

• Second Layer: Dysphotic Zone; some sunlight but not enough for plants to grow

• Third Layer: Aphotic Zone; no light at all and few animals can survive there

Ocean Life• Marine plants live in the euphotic zone

because they need sunlight. Includes seaweed, algae, grasses, and more

• Marine animals have a large variety including both mammals and fish like whales, dolphins, clownfish and many more
