College Credit Approval

The education and training programs offered by theNational Council on Strength and Fitness have been reviewed bythe American Council on Education in Washington, D.C. Thesuccessful review and approval of the organization’s educationalcurriculum allows the NCSF to offer college credit to studentsparticipating in, and successfully completing, educationalcoursework. College credits may be transferred to over 1,000participating colleges/universities throughout the United Statesand credits may be applied toward state certificate renewal, andprofessional license or certification renewal requirements.

Considered the top national personal training workshop course available, the NCSF InteractiveWorkshop Course was created specifically for students who desire an enhanced learning experience duringtheir exam preparation. The Workshop Course combines a comprehensive self-study component with aconcentrated 2-day, hands-on learning seminar. This format allows you the opportunity to review the examcontent areas while turning theoretical concepts into the practical applications required of a personal trainer.

The NCSF Training School is a structured eight-week course designed for students seeking maximalsupervision and support throughout their learning experience. Each class addresses key content areasfrom the NCSF-CPT Exam, as well as pertinent topics necessary to ensure your development as a qualifiedprofessional. From health screening and assessment to comprehensive program design and instruction,the NCSF Training School empowers students with the skills necessary to become a successful certifiedpersonal trainer.

Training Schools are currently hosted by several colleges in the greater SouthFlorida area and are expanding into regional markets throughout the country.Registration is completed directly through the hosting college or university. Taught by graduate-degreed instructors, the NCSF Training School provides you with thescience behind effective fitness programming, as well as the opportunity to put theory intopractice through performance of weekly practical exercises. Refunds The NCSF Exam Preparation Courses (Interactive Workshop

Course and Home Study Course) are non-refundable programs.

Rescheduling Any participant who needs to reschedule their workshop

Workshop RetakeParticipants that complete the NCSF Interactive Workshop

Course and do not pass the NCSF-CPT Exam may retake theworkshop one time at half of the original enrollment fee (if coursematerials are not needed). Transfer of RegistrationParticipants may transfer their registration of the NCSF

NCSF Board for Certification

The National Council on Strength and Fitness Board for Certification (NCSFBC) is comprised oftwelve (12) members who have been elected to represent the stakeholders of the certificationprogram, including the general public. The NCSFBC serves as the authority over the certified

personal trainer credential, with the responsibility of supervising, controlling, and directing all of the affairsof the NCSF-CPT Exam. This governance extends over its committees and all their administrativeactivities.

The role of the NCSFBC is to ensure public safety through valid measurement of competency, thecreation and enforcement of standards of professional practice, and the sanctioning of professionalmisconduct. The NCSFBC also serves to represent the best interest of practicing professionals as well asthe interests of all stakeholders of the certification program and the personal training profession as a whole.

Test Administration

The NCSFBC utilizes Thomson Prometric’s computer-based test development, test delivery, anddata management services to assess and certify the skills of personal trainers. Thomson Prometric hasthousands of computer-based testing and assessment centers worldwide, providing easy access andflexible appointment scheduling to take your NCSF-CPT Exam at the date, time, and location of yourchoosing. To ensure the integrity of the testing experience and exam outcomes, each ThomsonPrometric test center maintains state-of-the-art equipment and professionally trained staff.Consistent with NCSF certification administration, Thomson Prometric Testing Centers are the defacto standard of credentialing assessments and accredited examinations.

NCSF-CPT Exam

The National Council on Strength and Fitness Certified Personal Trainer (NCSF-CPT) Exam ispsychometrically designed to assess the competency of individuals looking to work with clients from thegeneral population in fitness training environments. The NCSF-CPT Exam has gone through rigoroustesting and analysis to serve as a valid and reliable assessment tool for professional credentialing, meetingthe highest standards for professional assessment set forth by the American Psychological Association, theAmerican Educational Research Association, the National Council on Measurement in Education, theAssociation of Test Publishers, the Buros Institute for Assessment Consultation and Outreach, and theNational Commission for Certifying Agencies.

NCSF-CPT Exam Eligibility Requirements

• NCSF-CPT Exam candidates must be 18 years of age or older

• NCSF-CPT Exam candidates must possess a high schooldiploma or equivalent

• Although not required, the NCSF recommends a minimumlevel of practical experience working in the health andfitness field.

(The NCSF-CPT Exam is independent from the education and

training courses provided by the NCSF. Enrollment in NCSF

education and training courses is not an eligibility requirement for the

NCSF-CPT Exam.)

Register for Your Exam

To be eligible to sit for the NCSF-CPT Exam you are required to first register with theorganization. The NCSF-CPT Exam fee is $199. The NCSFBC offers you four convenientmethods for registration:

Schedule Your Exam

Once you have registered for the NCSF-CPT Exam and have received your exam eligibilitynumber, you can schedule your exam appointment for the date, time, and location of yourchoosing with Thomson Prometric Testing Centers. All exam scheduling and administration

is handled directly through Thomson Prometric.

Exam scheduling options:

For your convenience, your NCSF-CPT Exam appointment can be scheduled withthe Thomson Prometric online scheduling system. The NCSF outlines thisscheduling option in the exam eligibility documentation sent to you upon examregistration.

NCSF-CPT Exam appointments can be made over the phone using the ThomsonPrometric toll-free scheduling service. This scheduling option is outlined in theexam eligibility documentation sent to you upon exam registration.

You may also schedule your NCSF-CPT Exam appointment in person at your localThomson Prometric testing center. This scheduling option is also explained to youin the exam eligibility documentation sent to you upon exam registration.

After you have scheduled an NCSF-CPT Exam appointment with Thomson Prometric, you will beprovided with a confirmation number. You will be required to provide this confirmation number and a valid,government issued, photo ID for exam check-in at the testing center. Expired forms of identifications willnot be accepted.

Take Your Exam

Upon arrival at the testing center for your NCSF-CPT Exam appointment, you will be requiredto provide the test administrator with your confirmation number and a valid, governmentissued, photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. You will then be directed into the

examination area where you will be given a full tutorial on the computerized examination equipment.

The NCSF-CPT Exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions which will evaluate your knowledgeand skills in nine content areas:

• Functional Anatomy • Exercise Physiology• Health & Physical Fitness • Health Screening & Evaluation• Nutrition • Weight Management• Exercise Prescription • Training Instruction• Special Populations

You will have three (3) hours to complete the examination. You must achieve the minimum cut scoreof the certification exam in order to earn the NCSF-CPT credential. Upon completion of the NCSF-CPTExam, you will receive a sectional analysis of your unofficial results as well as your overall score indicatingwhether you have passed or failed to achieve the minimum score for certification. Official certification isavailable on the organization’s credential verification system on the NCSF website within 5 business days.

Retesting Policy

In the event you do not achieve the minimum required score to pass the NCSF-CPT Exam, you mayretake the certification exam. You will be required to pay a retest fee of $135. Registration for the NCSF-CPT Exam retest must be completed with an NCSF representative by calling toll-free at 800-772-NCSF.Please refer to the Retest Policy in the Policies and Procedures section of the registration form for moredetails regarding this option.

Maintaining Your Credential

Professionals who continue to expand their repertoire of skills and knowledge are best suited to servetheir clients’ needs. The NCSF Board for Certification has established a requirement of ten (10) continuingeducation units (CEUs) to be completed over a two-year reporting period to ensure that a safe level ofprofessional competency is maintained by NCSF-CPTs. This requirement can be met through manydifferent methods including, but not limited to, attendance at industry conferences and clinics,participation in workshops and seminars, or completion of pre-approved home study and onlinecoursework. Paying for the Examination

The NCSF will only register candidates that submit a COMPLETED application andpayment in FULL. The NCSF will return all incomplete applications and/or applicationswith inadequate funds. Exam fees are subject to change without notice. The NCSFaccept checks, money orders and credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, Discover or AmericanExpress). The NCSF does not accept cash or purchase orders. Checks or money ordersshould be in U.S. funds, drawn on a U.S. bank, and payable to the NCSF Board forCertification. Your exam confirmation number will be valid for one year. If you have notcontacted Thomson Prometric for an exam appointment using your assignedconfirmation number within one year you must re-register with the NCSF. Your re-registration is subject to the same policies as the exam retake. If you cannot make yourexam appointment and fail to contact your exam center within 72 hours of yourscheduled appointment time you must re-register under the exam retake policies.

In the United States, an income tax deduction may be allowed for expenses related toeducation necessary to maintain or improve professional skills. See your tax advisor fordetails.

NCSF Board for Certification Exams are approved for VA benefits: Active military,veterans and eligible spouses and dependents can receive reimbursement for theirNCSF exam fees. This benefit applies to NCSF-CPT exams taken on or after Jan 1,2004, and includes both first time and retake fees. If you are entitled to military benefitsand have been considering taking the NCSF-CPT certification exam to broaden yourprofessional skills, now is the perfect time. Taking the Certification Exam

After you schedule an exam appointment using your eligibility number with ThomsonPrometric, you will be sent an exam confirmation number. Your exam confirmationnumber will be valid for one year. You will need to bring the confirmation number alongwith a current government issued ID to your exam location at the time of yourappointment. Expired identification documents will not be accepted. You will have 3hours to complete the 150 question multiple choice exam.

Disqualification

You may be disqualified from taking or continuing in the examination process, orfrom receiving exam results, if the NCSF Board for Certification and/or ThomsonPrometric (the organization administering the exams on behalf of the NCSF Board forCertification) have determined through either examiner observation or statisticalanalysis that you were engaged in collaborative, disruptive or other unacceptablebehavior before, during or following the administration of the NCSF Board Exam.

Rescheduling

If for any reason you are unable to take the exam on the date and time for which youregistered, you must reschedule to avoid forfeiting your entire exam fee. You have up to72 hours before your exam appointment to reschedule through Thomson Prometric.Note: You must take your exam within one year of your original registration. If you donot take the exam within the one year period you must re-apply to take the examination.The retest fee will apply.

Rescheduling can be done online, over the phone or by visiting your local ThomsonPrometrics testing center. In order to reschedule you will need your confirmationnumber. This number was provided to you upon your initial appointment scheduling.

If you cannot make your exam appointment and fail to contact your ThomsonPrometric exam center within 72 hours of your scheduled appointment time you mustre-apply to take the examination. The retest fee will apply.

Refund Policy

If you decide for any reason you cannot or do not wish to take the exam afterregistering, you may request a refund in lieu of scheduling your exam. To request arefund you must contact the NCSF in writing within 30 days (electronically date-stampedor postmarked) of original exam registration. If the request is received within the 30days of original registration, refunds will be 50% of your exam registration fee. Thereare no refunds after thirty days of original exam registration or if the eligibility numberhas been used to schedule an exam.

Exceptions to the refund deadline will be considered on a case-by-case basis fordocumented cases of medical, bereavement, or other emergencies. In these instances,candidates must electronically date-stamp or postmark their refund request no later than60 days after the exam date and provide any and all supporting documentation. Norefunds will be given for rescheduled examinations. You can expect to receive yourrefund or notice of denial within six weeks of your request. All examination registrationsare non-transferable.

Retest Policy

In the event you do not meet the minimum passing score on the exam, you mayregister for a retest. The Retest Exam fee is $135.00.To register for a Retest:

1. Contact the NCSF directly at 800-772-NCSFor

2. Submit a Retest Exam Application to the NCSF. Download and complete the RetestExam Form on the NCSF website. Enclose a check or money order payable to the NCSFfor $135.00. After your request has been processed, you will receive a new eligibilitynumber. No refunds are give for the Retest Exam fee.

You are eligible for the Retest Exam fee for a period of one year after you have takenyour first exam. After this one year period, you must submit the first-time candidateexam fee.

Special Exam Accommodations

Special arrangements can be made if you have a visual, sensory, physical or otherdisability that prevents you from taking the exam under standard conditions. Accordingto the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), documentation of the disability must bemade by a professional qualified to diagnose the disability at the time of registration.

Written requests and completed registration information from disabled candidatesmust include a description of the accommodation requested. The NCSF reserves theright to determine the reasonableness of the accommodation requested. Requests forspecial accommodations must be made at the time of registration. Additional feesmay apply.

General Policies and Procedures

Confidentiality: No information submitted to the NCSF or Thomson Prometric will bereleased to a third party without your authorization.

Disclosure: To maintain the integrity and security of the NCSF Board exams, examquestions, answer sheets, answers or other source materials will not be released tocandidates under any circumstances. Fair and Equal Treatment of NCSF Candidates:NCSF does not discriminate against any individual on the basis of religion, gender,ethnic background, age, national origin or physical disability.

Exam Score Information

Thomson Prometric uses state-of-the-art testing and scoring to administer andevaluate your responses. During the exam check-out process you will be provided withthe score report. You must reach the minimum cut score for your exam in order to earnthe NCSF-CPT credential. Your exam results will automatically be sent to the NCSFBoard for Certification.

Awarding of the NCSF-CPT Credential: Only candidates who achieve the minimumcut score for their exam will be awarded the NCSF-CPT credential. Should you meet theminimum passing requirements for certification, your certificate and ID card will bemailed to you within 7-10 business days of passing the NCSF-CPT Exam. Should youfail to meet the minimum passing requirements, you may retest (see Retest Policy).

Marketing Your Certification Status

You may only market yourself as an NCSF Certified Personal Trainer (NCSF-CPT)while your certification is current. If you do not renew your certification by earning thenecessary continuing education credits and paying the appropriate renewal fees, or byre-taking and passing the NCSF Board exam, you may not claim to be NCSF certified.False certification claims may prohibit your ability to renew your certification or re-takean NCSF Board exam.

Maintaining Your Certification Status

To uphold the standards set forth by the NCSF Board for Certification, all NCSF-CPT’s are required to participate in the NCSF continuing education program to maintaina certified status. Over a period of two (2) years, beginning on your date of certification,the NCSF Certified Personal Trainer must fulfill a ten continuing education unit (CEU)requirement. CEU’s are granted based upon the criteria established by the NCSF Boardfor Certification. CEU’s that are attained in excess of the required amount cannot be usedfor the next CEU term. Failure to meet the CEU requirement will result in the forfeitureof your certified status as deemed by the NCSF Board for Certification.

Specific CEU reporting policies and guidelines will be sent to each NCSF certifiedtrainer upon gaining certification and/or recertification. For a complete description ofthe CEU Policies and Procedures please refer to the continuing education section of theNCSF web site.

The National Council on Strength and Fitness is amember-driven organization, created to provide supportand network services for the practicing professional.
