Space Grant Objectives

1. Establish and maintain a national network of universities.

2. Encourage cooperative programs among universities, aerospace industry, and Federal, state, and local governments.

3. Encourage interdisciplinary education, research, and public service programs related to aerospace.

4. Recruit and train U.S. citizens, especially women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities.

5. Promote a strong science, mathematics, and technology education base from elementary through secondary levels.

Research Infrastructure Programs

1. Research Initiation Grants: To conduct research of interest to

NASA in collaboration with a NASA scientist ($20,000

NASA, $10,000 CS)

2. Joint University-Industry Research Opportunity Program: To

work on a collaborative research project with high tech

companies in WV ($20,000 NASA, $20,000 CS)

3. NASA Graduate Research Fellowship Program: Provides

funding for graduate students working on a thesis or

dissertation with faculty from member institutions ($12,000

NASA, $12,000 CS)

4. NASA Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program: Provides

support for undergraduate students to get involved in a

research project under the supervision of their academic

Companies: Ten-week summer research internships at NASA

field centers and companies in West Virginia

Extension and Public Outreach

1. Extension and Public Outreach Program: Supports outreach

activities such as conferences that promote the

understanding, education, development, and utilization of

space. Seminars that encourage interdisciplinary training and

1. Research Seed Grant Program: Small seed grants to

prepare for larger research efforts and proposals ($10,000

2. Travel Grant Program: To travel to NASA Centers to

meet with NASA scientist to discuss and initiate research

3. College-University Collaboration Program: Faculty

from WVU or Marshall team up with faculty from smaller

colleges in WV in a research mentoring role

($20,000 NASA, $20,000 CS)

NASA Internships

• Available to Pre-College, Undergraduate, and Graduate

students

• Travel to one of the many NASA Centers in the country

• Experience a paid internship alongside NASA employees

NASA Academy

• Available to Undergraduate and First-Year Graduate

students

• Intense learning experience that is either space or

aeronautics based

• Experience a paid summer internship focused on

leadership development

• The Academies have separate focus areas of leadership

including: robotics, aeronautics, space, planetary science,

and propulsion.

• Travel to one of the NASA Centers with Academy

Programs:

– Ames Research Center (Mountain View, CA)

– Dryden Flight Research Center (Edwards AFB, CA)

– Glenn Research Center (Cleveland, OH)

– Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, MD)

– Langley Research Center (Hampton, VA)

– Marshall Space Flight Center (Huntsville, AL)

NASA Fellowships

• Available to Undergraduate and Graduate students

• Submit a proposal idea to a NASA mentor, including the research you

will conduct for their opportunity

• Work with a NASA mentor and an academic advisor from your

institution to create the proposal

• Each 12 month fellowship award includes a 10 week NASA Center

research experience at the Center that extending the award

• Available Fellowships:

– NASA Office of Education Fellowship Programs

– NASA Space Technology Research Fellowships

– NASA Harriett G. Jenkins Graduate Fellowship Program

– Graduate Student Research Program (GSRP)

– Jenkins Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Program (JPFP)

NASA Scholarships

• Available to rising Undergraduate Sophomores or Juniors

students

• If awarded a scholarship, you will complete a 10-week

internship at a NASA Center or NASA Headquarters

• Available Scholarships:

– Minority University Research and Education Program

(MUREP)

– Motivating Undergraduates in Science and

Technology (MUST)

• Are you a U.S. citizen?

• Are you currently enrolled full-time in or accepted to an

accredited U.S. college or university?

• Are you a student with a 2.8 or higher GPA?
