Overview of Aviary Roc Music Creator

Step 1: IntroductionRoc is a music creation application. It's mainly designed to create drum loops, but it has been expanded to include melodic instruments like pianos and guitars. It currently has over 100 sound banks to choose from, giving you thousands of sounds to create your loops with. This is a basic overview of what Roc is and how you can get started!

Roc is a simple application that is divided into 6 basic areas:

1. Event tracks 2. File Commands 3. Track Controls 4. Instruments (Soundbanks) Panel 5. Sounds Panel

Step 2: Overview

Page 8: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Event tracks are where you will be setting the actual beats and sounds for your loop. There are twelve tracks and each can hold a different sound. Along each of these tracks are a number of empty event slots that represent a time in the track. Clicking on one of the event slots will activate the sounds at that particular time in the loop. You will notice that the event will light up, showing you there. Try setting a few events in different slots along the tracks

Step 3: Events, Velocities, and Playhead

Page 9: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

To hear your events, start the playhead. The playhead is displayed in the section at the top of the tracks called the timeline. To start it, press the play button in the upper left corner of the app. Once the playhead has started, you'll see it as a green highlight moving along the timeline. The playhead will play any event that it comes across as it travels along the timeline. When an event is triggered, it'll be highlighted and you'll hear it play.

Step 3: Events, Velocities, and Playhead

Page 10: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Not only can an event trigger a sound, it also has its own volume. These individual event volumes are called velocities and are used to give your beats accents. To change velocities, click the Velocity Mode button at the top of the application. The events will turn in to volume bars which you can drag up or down to change the volume for each individual event.

Step 3: Events, Velocities, and Playhead

Page 11: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 4: File Commands

File commands are there to help you control the timing, playing, master volume, and other functions of your beat. The beat display in the upper left shows the current measure, beats and tempo, along with the play/pause button. To set the tempo, just click and drag the tempo (the number itself) up or down to speed it up or slow it down, respectively.

Page 12: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Continued……Step 4: File Commands

Next is the Beats per Measure selector, which lets you set how quickly beats will be triggered and how many beats there are in a measure.

In the center is the toggle for Beat/Velocity mode, where you can switch between adding events or editing velocities.

Page 13: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 4: File Commands

To the right is the master volume that controls the main volume for all the tracks.

The gray bar underneath this has various commands where you can clear all, set random events in beat mode, set random velocities in velocity mode, or reset all.

Page 14: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 5: Track ControlsTrack controls are where you can set the sound, volume, and panning for each individual track. In the upper left, you'll see a small triangle which you can click on to expand the options menu containing advanced commands and functions for the track.

On the right side of each track name, you'll see some circular controls with blue and green lines. The green section on the left controls the overall volume of the track; dragging it up or down will make all events on that track louder or softer. The blue line on the right controls the panning; dragging it up will force more sound to come from the left speaker, and dragging it down will push the sound towards the right speaker.

Page 15: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 6: Instruments (Soundbanks) Panel

On the right side of the application is the Instrument panel, where you can view all the available soundbanks. Soundbanks are groups of twelve notes/sounds of the same instrument. Clicking on a soundbank will load all the sounds into the sounds panel bellow. However, you can also load an entire soundbank (like if you know you want your whole beat to be made up of piano notes) onto the tracks, either by clicking on the Add All button next the soundbank or by dragging it onto the tracks.

Page 16: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 7: Sounds PanelThe sounds panel is where all the individual sounds from a soundbank are displayed. You can add a sound by simple dragging it to the desired track. You can mix and match any combination of twelve sounds form any of the sound banks. If you mix and match sounds from various sondbanks, you will have a second file show up in your creations when you save. This is your custom soundbank and is only used when opening the file again, and will sound odd if you listen to it.

Page 17: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 8: Save Bar

This will slide down a panel where you can give your creation a tile, a description, some tags (making easier to find later), and permissions. Once that's all filled out (only title is required), hit the save button again to complete the saving process. Once saved, you'll be given links for embedding the file on the web or in the forums, sharing to social media sites, and downloading .wav or .mp3 files of your song.

he Save bar at the top is persistent throughout all of the Aviary applications. This is where you will save, share and download your file. When you're ready to save your awesome beat, click on the "Save as" button in the upper right.

Page 18: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 9: Downloading Your BeatsIf you want to download your beat to your computer, you can either use the download links within Roc after saving, or you can go to your beat's creation page anytime. You can find all your creations by navigating to You > Your Creations from the green menu bar at the top of any aviary.com page. From there, find the beat and open the individual creation page. to start the download process

On the right side of this page, there are several command. Click on either Download .wav or Download .mp3 to start the download process. Note: if this makes the beat play in a separate window you may have to right click on the button and choose the Save Link as...command

Create a Podcast with Myna

Step 1: Introduction

Have you ever wanted to produce your own podcast for school, personal, or professional uses? It's super easy with our audio editor, Myna! You can add musical breaks using the included Quantum Tracks library, integrate your personalized Roc beats, and record your own voice or instrument. Let's get started!

Narration Intro to Myna

Page 23: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 2: The Application

The basis of most podcasts is the speaking, and luckily you can record directly into Myna. Start by opening Myna. You'll be presented with the Myna workspace. In the center are ten tracks that will hold your sound clips. Across the top are the file commands, containing all the options for manipulating your audio clips and the file. Right below that is the track overview bar for fast navigation of a file. Along the bottom is the library button that will open the available sound clips on Aviary. The import button will show all the clips loaded into the application. Next are the tempo and play controls, used to set the timing of your creation. And finally, the Record button will open the recording module.

Page 24: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 3: Recording Your Voice

To record your voice using Myna, all you need is a microphone on your computer (most come with built-in microphones, so you should be all set). Start by clicking on the Record button in the lower right corner of the application. This will open the recording module. First, set-up and test your microphone. When you speak into it, the meter bar should go up and down; if you don't see that, double check that your microphone is turned on and plugged in. You can also increase the volume of the microphone input and reduce echo. When you're ready, click the Record button and you'll be recording! The progress bar will start filling up, showing you the time you have remaining in that recording. There is currently a two minute time limit on recordings, so if you have a longer podcast (and we assume you probably do) you will have to break them up into multiple recording sessions.

Page 25: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 4: Add The Clip

Once the recording is finished importing into the file, it'll show up in the Imported sidebar on the right side of the application. Now all you have to do is drag it onto one of the tracks to add it into the file. To follow this example, drag the clip to Track 1.

Page 26: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 5: Fine TuningIf your recording turns out less than perfect, you can use the built in Parametric EQ to tune up the clip. Open the Effects module by double clicking on the clip that's on the track. Next, from the first dropdown, choose the Parametric EQ effect. Seven new control dials will appear, which you can adjust to change the parameters for this effect. If you start the clip playing (just press play in the module), you can adjust the effect in real time. In my sample recording, my voice needed the lower frequencies boosted and the higher ones lowered; play around with the parameters until you find the settings that work best for you. When you're done making the adjustments, press the apply button to commit the effect to your clip.

Page 27: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 6: TrimmingYou may have to cut the ends of your recording off to remove the pauses that inevitably occur between starting a recording and your talking. To do this, start playing the clip and determine where you want to trim the beginning of the clip. Once that's determined, hover your mouse over the top corner of the clip and you'll see a little triangle icon appear. This is the trim handle. Drag the handle to the location you want the clip to be trimmed. Do the same for the end of your clip.

Page 28: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 7: Adding an Intro

Open the Quantum Tracks library (or your Roc beats library!) using the library button. Now search through the thousands of sound clips to find a good intro for your podcast. In this example, I used afternoon_walk_intro05a. To add your clip, simply drag it to the track below the voice track, track 2.

Page 29: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 8: Adjusting and Fade InWe want the intro to start playing, then fade out right as the voiceover comes in. To do this, make sure the intro clip is all the way over to the left so it will start first. Then drag the voiceover clip to the right so that it is beginning a little before the intro clip ends. On track 2 (the one that contains the intro clip) click the Auto button in the track controls. This will open the automation controls directly below the track, allowing you to make changes to volume and panning during the playback of the clip. Choose the Fades option and you will see that there are now two square control handles in the automation track. Click and drag the second one to fade out the intro clip. Dragging up or down will change the curve of the fade out.

Page 30: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 9: Adding the Background Music

For my podcast, I want a very quiet background track to play while my voiceover is going. Find another clip in Myna's library. I used another track from the same clip group, afternoon_walk_loop02a. This will tie the entire podcast into o a common theme. Drag your clip to track 2 and make sure it's pushed all the way against the intro clip. Using the end trim handle, stretch the clip so that it's almost as long as the voiceover clip. When you use the trim handles to lengthen a clip, it'll be looped to fill the entire length. To lower the volume of the background music, click on the auto button again. This time, choose the Gain control and you'll see a yellow line on the automation track. Simply click and drag this line until it's about halfway down the track. This will reduce the volume of the background music by half, so as not to obscure the voiceover. You can play the track while doing this to hear the volumes in real time.

Page 31: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 10: Adding an Outro

Choose another clip from the Myna library if you'd like to add an outro to your podcast. I used an outro from the same sound group, afternoon_walk_end02a. Drag your clip onto track 2 and line it up against the end of the background music clip (if you have one). Open the automation controls, choose fade and fade out the end of your clip.

Page 32: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Step 11: Save and MixdownSave your file when you're done by using the "Save As" button in the upper right corner of the app. After the file is saved, a little dialog will pop up asking you to mixdown your file. You will want to do this if you want listen to the file outside of the application (it'll "flatten" your podcast so you can play it as a normal .mp3 instead of as a layered .egg file for editing on Aviary). Press the Mixdown button and the process will begin. Depending on how long your podcast is, the amount of tracks you used, and your imported clips, this can take up to a few minutes. Once the process is done, you can download your file as an .mp3 or .wav!

Page 33: Narration –Introduction Podcast : is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web.

Drill and Practice Using Aviary Myna, insert the sounds you created using Aviary Roc and practice splitting, reducing volume, increasing volume, and save the modified sounds to personal folder on your desktop. In addition create a voice narration and save it in your person folder on the desktop.

Now that you have completed the steps for editing audio and music using Aviary Myna, complete the drill and practice exercise. If you need addition help, navigate to the teacher’s wiki and watch the video on editing audio/music using Aviary Myna.
