Drama Club, something he shares with
his wife Barbara, a former teacher and
now a historian and author. “Noises
Off” is the second play he has direct-
ed for TWN and his third play this
year. Explaining that he, the cast and
vital crew put in an average of four
hours a day during rehearsals, he said
eventually he would like to pare this
part of his life down to a play every
two years. As rewarding as it is,
whether directing students or stage
veterans, the role is exhausting and
requires dedicated personal invest-
ment.
“When I do the Drama Club at the
high school, Barbara and I sort of run
that together and we do everything:
the lighting, the sound, the set design
and construction, the posters and the
programs,” White said. “I have to say
Theatre Workshop 10 years ago was
more like that, but now Theatre
Workshop is so professional. As
director, I’m just one small piece of
the machine. Theatre Workshop has
come a long way in its ability to put
on a professional production.”
White moved to the island in 1973
after college. Nantucket represented
his first teaching application, his first
teaching job interview and his first
and only such position. For 31 years,
he taught middle and high school
English, social studies and drama. He
took a sabbatical to earn his master’s
degree in Contemporary Theater
Practice and Criticism, and when he
returned he started working with the
school’s musicals and comedies.
“My interest in theater began very
slowly,” he said. “I was an English
teacher with an English degree.
Theater is really hands-on English. I
found students like reading plays bet-
ter than a novel and then discussing it.
That’s how I came to drama — it’s
hands-on English.”
White retired from teaching seven
years ago. He and Barbara love to
travel as often as possible, read and
go bird watching. Though he admits
that it can be tiring and taxing work-
ing on the student plays, he finds it
refreshing as well. He truly enjoys
directing performances on all levels,
and takes his position seriously.
“My role as a director is to be a wit-
ness,” he said. “I’m kind of like a cre-
ative enabler that allows the actors to
do their real creative work. I’m a one-
person audience.”
