Lisa McCandless, associate director and curator at the Egan Maritime Institute, is no exception. As the story goes, her grandfather, a lawyer from Connecticut, was on a fishing trip with friends. Although not much of a fisherman, he was the only of the bunch catching anything that day. When he tired of fishing, he declared his wish to return home. The friends pleaded with him to reconsider, and he did, so long as “you bring me to that little island,” he said, pointing off in the distance. That island was Nantucket, and the day was June 6, 1944 — D-Day. The group arrived as a celebration was taking place on Main Street. “There was great camaraderie and sense of communi- ty,” McCandless said. “He went home and told my grand- mother to pack her bags. He said he was going to take her to the most beautiful place on Earth.” A visitor as a child, McCandless has now called that most beautiful place home for some 20 years. All the while, she’s had, she says, “many chapters in my life.” She’s been a teacher at Nantucket Elementary School and Children’s House of Nantucket, a writer, a human resources manager at Marine Home Center and Nantucket Bank, a newspaper columnist. Through it all, she has explored passions for teaching, children and the island’s history. Serendipitous as her grandfather’s “discovery” of Nantucket was, McCandless landed in her current job by a similar stroke of good luck and even better timing. Almost everyone who ends up on

Nantucket washes ashore with a good

story. Lisa McCandless, associate director

As the story goes, her grandfather, a lawyer from

married a man who lived and worked in

New York City, and visited the island on

That was 2009. McCandless is now

finishing her second season with the

institute and the museum, which is open

from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.

Her role requires multitasking – from

planning lectures and programs, to

organizing events at the museum and

elsewhere, to coordinating the muse-

um’s yearly special exhibit.

This year’s exhibit focuses on the

20th anniversary of Hurricane Bob and

the No Name Storm, the weather event

made famous by the book and movie

“The Perfect Storm.”

“It’s a pretty exciting exhibit,” she

said. “We collected all these local sto-

ries from people about their experiences

with the storms, and there are so many

original photos.”

McCandless recruited and worked

with islanders to bring the exhibit to

life. Images from local photographers,

including Michael Galvin and Rob

Benchley, were blown up and mounted

by Jeff Allen. Artists Edwin Rudd, Sue

Riddle and Glenn Spear helped turn the

exhibition room into an interactive and

informative space. Rudd, a watercolorist,

“painted all the walls to look like you’re

in the middle of the ocean,” McCandless

said. Riddle and an associate created a

3-D wave that appears to be coming

right out of the wall. Spear crafted a

boat installation to simulate the same.

“We try to use everyone locally –

artists and other talented people in the

community,” McCandless said.

The result, she said, is a dramatic

exhibit that educates and engages peo-

ple of all ages.

In 1992, McCandless notched a major

accomplishment: The children’s book

she’d written was published by Penguin.

“Island Child,” written under the pen

name Lisa Wallis, explores and recaptures

the experiences McCandless and her sis-

ter had as children visiting Nantucket.

The genesis of “Island Child” began

with the reading McCandless did with

her two children and the trips they took

together to the library.

“I was just inspired by the children’s

books I was reading to them,” she said.

“I’d always been a writer of poetry and

short stories, and reading to my chil-

dren encouraged me to try my hand at it

writing a book.”

The book, she said, is more than a

collection of words on pages.

“It’s a way of leaving something

behind from the heart,” she said. “It

combines my love of children and my

love of writing.”

Could McCandless – who was once

“the little girl who would get excited

when it was library day at school” –

have another book in her future?

“I’d like to think so,” she said.

McCandless devotes much of her

days to the maritime institute and the

lifesaving museum, but she keeps time

for enjoying all the island has to offer

its seasonal and year-round residents.

“I like to get out of town and away

from the hubbub and take advantage of

the natural beauty of the island,” she

said, with hiking, bicycling and getting

out on the water among her favorite

activities. “And spending time with my

grown children – when they decide they

want to spend time with me!”

ly brought a city of strangers into a small Town exis-

tence ... and I felt right at home.

Iwoke up to a beautiful blue sky & serene September

morning and thought, “does it get any better than

this?” I lingered in quiet for a while and then turned on

the TV to the Today Show and saw the news anchors in

black. I remember the images of a plane hitting a build-

ing — which I would soon find out was the twin tow-

ers — and hearing this was plane number one, and then

the surreal realization of a second plane making a

direct hit. It seemed a blur, and I almost felt numb until

my husband, who is a fire department captain, called

from his workplace at the Nantucket Fire Department,

nd asked me if I was ok. I think hearing his voice con-

firmed that it was very real and how much pain he must

be feeling that fellow brothers of firefighting had per-

ished doing the same job that he does daily. I will never

forget the images and words of that day. Since that day,

I hold my husband and children more dear, because in

a millisecond a world of change can happen.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years. I remember it

pretty clearly. I was in graduate school and teaching

several undergraduate courses at TCU in Fort Worth,

Texas. We sat in the English office and watched the

reports coming in, and they cancelled classes for the

day. My most vivid memory, though, was the next day,

when these college students looked to me for some

kind of answer as to what had happened and what I

thought was going to happen next. I wasn't much older

than they were, so I know I felt as scared and insecure

as they did, but I was in the position of having to fake

it as some kind of adult authority figure. I have to say

that I don’t think I was terribly effective in that role,

but we were all doing the best we could in a world that,

in the cliched blink of an eye, had changed forever in

ways we couldn’t even begin to imagine at the time.

My classes for the next couple of days consisted of just

letting the kids talk about what they were feeling. A lot

of them cried, and they were all really, really scared of

what would happen as a result. It was as surreal an

experience as I have ever had.

Our daughter called from Charleston, S.C. and said

“turn on the radio, some plane has hit the twin

towers. Did we know what tower our friend worked

in?” We did not have TV at the time so we ran to a

friends house and watched in disbelief as the second

plane struck — and then other horrific news.

As the minutes, hours and days passed the stories

came to you, it was as if a stone were thrown into a

pond and the ripple effects distorting the tranquility; in

essence destroying the safety and security of our home

— the USA. Nothing is the same and the ripples have

touched all sides of the pond. The lost, the heroes and

the day will never be forgotten.

Iwas on First Way driving the elder van to pick up

clients at the Adult Community Day Center when I

heard the news on the radio. It had just taken place so

information was sketchy, but by the time I got to a TV

at the senior center there was video showing the unbe-

lievable disaster and confused horror on the faces of

those who saw the event unfold. This country has never

been the same since then and I doubt anyone will ever

be able to fathom how that could have happened.

My heart seems to ache just as much today as it did on

that day in 2001. I sat at my desk in the Coffin Real

Estate office on Centre Street and heard the tragic events

play out the morning that changed so many lives forever.
