Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitaon of People with Disability On 5 April 2019, the Prime Minister, the Hon Sco Morrison MP, and Minister for Families and Social Services, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, announced the establishment of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitaon of People with Disability. As part of the hearings of the Commission there is an educaon issues paper. The following is for your informaon from the Commission, not my own words as principal. “The issues paper has been adapted from a paper developed for a workshop on educaon and learning held in Melbourne on 3 October, 2019 with representaves from community and disability organisaons and educaon academics. The Royal Commission has idenfied that abuse, neglect and exploitaon of people with disability in the educaon sector is an important topic to address. Research suggests that children with disability experience higher rates of suspension and expulsion from schools and that children with disability may be excluded from school acvies, such as excursions, assemblies, sports carnivals etc. Over the last decade, the segregaon of children with disability into special educaon units/classes or 'special' schools has increased. Students with ausm have been disproporonately affected by this in- crease. First Naons students with disability are also disproporonately over-represented in special schools. The Royal Commission issues paper on educaon outlines the Commission's preliminary understanding of the key issues and barriers experienced by students with disability and asks 13 quesons. One of the 13 quesons is as follows: Q11. “What is essenal to facilitate the transion from segregated or integrated sengs to inclusive educaon sengs, and to sustain the change?” hps://disability.royalcommission.gov.au/ publicaons/Documents/educaon-learning- issues-paper.pdf The Royal Commission is encouraging responses from individuals and organisaons to the issues paper, if possible, by 20 December 2019 although submissions will be accepted aſter that date. Responses to the issues paper should be provided, either: electronically to [email protected], or in wring to GPO Box 1422, Brisbane, Queensland 4001. Now, these are my words below: I wanted to let you all know that it is vital that you have your voice heard by the Commission, as many other voices are in this space using phrases such as “isolated and segregated special schools” and others want recommendaons for us to be phased out to provide an ‘inclusive’ system. This is offensive to me. We don’t segregate as a special school, we are actually the only truly inclusive schools and we pride ourselves on providing the best educaon and care for our most deserving and complex learners. Mainstream schools usually can’t. Unfortunately, others who don’t know what we do and have never ever visited to see what we do, are making submissions and influencing decisions on behalf of our students, your children. Please have your say so that the voice of parents of our special schools are heard across Australia. Just before your young person turns 16 remember to apply for the Disability Support Pension (DSP) at Centrelink. You should ask for the 'Educational Supplement' while your child is still attending school too. You should receive more financial support for your household when your young person receives the DSP, which means you will lose Family Tax Benefit (FTB). Centrelink stated- Regarding when a young person claims DSP and parents receiving FTB. If a customer is claiming DSP online, the FTB will cancel automatically. If a customer claims DSP in paper form FTB will not cancel automatically which could incur a debt if DSP is granted. If by any chance the DSP is rejected FTB can be restored back to the cancel date.
Please check your DSP eligibility.
If you require proof of identity from the Department of Education to apply for the Disability
Support Pension just before the student turns 16 years of age please contact the school office.
We will provide a letter and a school identification card.

Voluntary School Contributions
Every public school asks for a small contribution towards the
many costs associated with education programs.
At Glenvale, we ask that parents contribute $35 per child each year.
This has not changed for many years and is very small in compari-
son to other schools, even though our costs can be much higher.
Please consider sending in the $35 as soon as you are able to do so; a payment
can be made via our webpage www.glenvale-s.schools.nsw.edu.au. Go to the
‘Make a Payment’ tab and follow the links.

please hand these into the school office. We have sufficient supplies of small sizes but are
desperate for size 18 and above.

fence posts and stainless steel products. These valuable resources are lost forever if you put your mobile
phone in the garbage bin. At landfill, mobile phone batteries leak toxic materials such as cadmium.
‘THE GIRL’
November 23—December 21, 2019 Opening night Friday November 22 at 7pm $10 per person The Entrance Gallery, Norberta St, The Entrance. A fundraiser exhibition for Coastwide Therapy Services Siblings Program. This art exhibition is a multi media installation that has been created by 11 year old Courtney Cottle who wants to create a voice through her art.
