BackgroundNapoleon was born in Corsica (a French

territory) in August 1769.His family belonged to the high social classHe was sent to military academy in FranceNapoleon graduated in 1785, at the age of 16,

and joined the artillery as a second lieutenant. During the French Revolution he served the

Revolutionary Army. 1799: took part in the coup d'état to overthrow

the government. 1804: He crowned himself Emperor Napoleon I. 1821: died on the island of Saint Helena in the

South Atlantic Ocean.

He restored the position of the Catholic Church in France

He introduced a comprehensive set of laws known as the Napoleonic Code, giving France a uniform set of laws

He was greatly loved and admired by the French people

Napoleon’s Final Exile The Napoleonic era ended with
