For this project, you will write poetry and/or analyze appropriate song lyrics in order to demonstrate your understanding of what we’ve learned. Then, you will compile your writing into some sort of book in a neat, colorful and creative way to share with your classmates. Worth 50 Summative Points Due Friday, April 25 th Directions: Pick one option from each underlined type of poetry. Bring materials to class, because a majority of the assignment will be completed here. Narrative Poetry Options: 1) Think of a story you could tell using a strong rhythm just like the meter in “Paul Revere’s Ride.” Open your poem with Longfellow’s first line (Listen, my children, and you shall hear/Of the scooter ride of Lily de Vere). Your story could be based on a real or imaginary person. (You can turn the one we did into a final draft) 2) Write out song lyrics of a narrative song, such as “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” Write a four-sentence summary of the lyrics to prove that the song is narrative poetry. Identify any poetic devices being used, including rhyme scheme and repetition.

Poetry Project

In class you examined different types of poetry and poetic techniques. For this project, you will write poetry and/or analyze appropriate song lyrics in order to demonstrate your understanding of what we’ve learned. Then, you will compile your writing into some sort of book in a neat, colorful and creative way to share with your classmates.

Worth 50 Summative PointsDue Friday, April 25th

Narrative Poetry Options:1) Think of a story you could tell using a strong rhythm just like the meter in

Ballad and Epic Options:1) Write an epic (mock or serious) about a hero. Remember to use formal,

elegant language that tells about a series of quests undertaken by a great hero.

2) Write out song lyrics of a ballad about love, betrayal or loss. Write at least four sentences about why you believe this song to be a ballad and why it is meaningful to you. Identify any poetic devices being used, including rhyme scheme and repetition.

3) Write a ballad about love, betrayal or loss. Use simple language and repetition, including a refrain.

Ode/Sonnet Options:1) Write an ode in honor of something you would like to celebrate in your life.

This could be real or serious. Express strong, positive feelings about your subject and talk directly to it.

2) Find something in nature that has a special meaning for you. Write a poem in which you help your reader picture something in the world of nature and understand how you feel about it. This can be done in free verse or in the form of a sonnet.

Elegy/Free Verse/Lyric Options:1) Write an elegy about someone or something you cared deeply about but lost.

Let the reader understand why the subject is important to you. You may write in free verse.

2) Write a free-verse poem about the sounds you hear around you. Be sure to use words and images that will help your reader hear the sounds.

3) Write a lyric poem to express a single, strong emotion. Use imagery and poetic devices to express the emotion.

4) Write out song lyrics that express a strong emotion (but that don’t tell a story!). Explain what the song means to you and what emotion is being shown in at least four sentences. Identify any poetic devices being used, including rhyme scheme and repetition.

Figurative Language1) Using a published poem or song lyrics show examples of the following:
