Commentary
Complete second edition of Loehneysenrsquos second work (including
as a lsquosecond partrsquo (=Book 4-8) the third (much enlarged) edition of
Loehneysenrsquos Vom Zeumen (1588) see no XX(170)) edited by Loeh-
neysenrsquos sons Heinrich Julius and Wolff Ernst von Loehneysen
This well-illustrated and exceptional instruction manual on
horsemanship is generally regarded as one of the most important
equestrian works of the early modern period providing all the
information a nobleman and stud-farm owner could possibly want
The descriptions but above all the many beautiful illustrations (378
in total) cover everything equestrians need to know about horses
In the Della Cavalleria Loumlhneysen based himself on antique texts
like Xenophon Plutarch and others The dressage exercises Loumlh-
neysen copies almost directly from the Ordini di Cavalcare of Fred-
erico Grisone which he knew probably from the translation into
German by Johann Faysers (Augsburg 1570 see no XX(127)) or
the translation by the stable masters of Marx Fugger Hand Froumllich
and Veit Tufft (Augsburg 1566 see no XX(128 and 126) But Loumlgh-
neysen is not a slavish follower Often he makes critical remarks
including his condemnation of Grisonersquos often harsh methods for
handling young horses But without the Italian School Loumlhneysen
could not have published his works
The preliminaries contain the title-page with the portrait of
Loehneysen on its verso the dedication to Johann Georg Duke of
Saxony by Heinrich Julius and Wolff Ernst von Loehneysen dated
Remlingen 1 September 1624 (pp (3)-(4)) important preface by

IntroductIon Johan deJager
Johan Dejager ( 21 May 1959 ) Ever since I was a child I was
fascinated with horses I started riding at age 12 and competed
for many years in show jumping at amateur level I turned to
drag hunt after that and started coaching my son who is an
international young rider in showjumping
Aside from the active part of the sport I always had a passion
for everything related to horses
Old books have an unmatched charm and through an article
in lrsquoEperon by Xavier Libbrecht I intensified my collectors
ambition and met with my friend Philippe Deblaise
With Philippe I discussed the scope of the collection and
together we searched for books at auctions in antiquarian shops
and in private librairies around the world Till today this has
lead to a collection of more than 300 books mainly 16th and
17th century from 175 authors across Europe
My collection concentrates on the period from the 15th till the
17th century with following subjects Horsemanship Riding
Masters Veterinary Science and the Cavalry After 1700 I only
collect beautifully illustrated books and series of plates
The purpose of this book is to bring all these famous authors
together in one book with their respective biographies and
bibliography
The focus of the book is to be encyclopedic with detailed
research and sources and not to give any opinion on one or
the other Author Riding school or Schooling system The book
should allow every horselover who is interested in horseman-
ship to have access to well organised and relevant information
into the history of this beautiful sport
