Reduced to ashes during World War II, it was rebuilt in its origi- nal form in 1959. It features a new five-storied ferroconcrete main donjon, 48m high and mounted by a pair of golden shachi (orca). The rooms on the first through the fifth floors are used to display art treasures that escaped the fires duringthe war, while the seventh floor serves as a scenic observatory. In the dis- play rooms are exhibited some pieces offusuma-e (paintings on sliding doors) and ceiling-pan el paintings, which were former- ly used in the lord’s mansion on the castle grounds. 場・資料館) holds one of the biggest kilns in Japan. It was onceused for baking clay pipes. Old Japanese ceramic toilets are ondisplay, as well as a number of terracotta works that decoratedWestern-style buildings in Japan until the beginning of 20th cen-
tury. The Tile Museum (タイル博物館) exhibits a large num-ber of beautiful tiles collected from all over the world. Inside thePermanent Exhibition Room, the museum has realistically repro-duced a number of historic tiled spaces, including an awe-inspir-ing mosque ceiling.
