PROJECTS

Page 5: #Nafuna 2014 Vol. 1

Tanga Nyika will be a feature length 2D computer animated film. The story is an adaptation of the Traditional folktale or “Ngano” of the “Mabandu Pandu” (Shape Shifters).

The first phase of the project is now complete. In this phase, a small creative team was assembled comprising some of Zimbabwe’s most brilliant emerging minds. The phase saw research into both the story as well as the technological work-flows that we would need to implement in order to achieve this

great task.

The result of the first phase has been a series of promo videos that were put up on the Nafuna.TV Website in order to showcase the progress made in the project. These videos were also screened in private screening sessions as well as circulated in the various social media networks.

A synopsis was written as well as the creation of various concept art and character design visuals.

TANGA NYIKA

Page 6: #Nafuna 2014 Vol. 1

For so long, generations before us relied on oral tradition to entertain, educate and inspire children (and sometimes even adults) through traditional folklore. The very blue print of the moral compass that guides our culture is rooted in lessons taught through these stories.

Tanga Nyika is an effort to preserve the age old tradition of story telling in a medium that is progressive, exciting and offers the tale a chance to be visualized in a way that it has never been before

One key issue that came to our attention during Phase 1, was how challenging it was to source and acquire information on the traditional philosophies, and historic cultural figures referenced in our

film. There is no central, up-to-date source of information on the deeper aspects of Afrikan cultural heritage.

This problem led us to creating a solution; to build a central server that would serve as a digital archive to store the information on the different aspects of Afrikan cultural heritage.

The phase we are now entering is

that of asset creation, developing the screenplay and cementing the production pipeline. At the end of this phase we intend to produce an animatic of the film. From there we proceed into production, post-production and then distribution and marketing.

The Tanga Nyika project was first conceptualized by Nqobizitha Mlilo

and the team has now grown to include Mhlengiwethu Nzima as writer, Kudzai Gumbo as concept artist, Aura Mlilo as narrative lead, Tawanda Mauchaza as music lead and Tafadzwa Tarumbwa as creative director and animator just to name a few. The team continues to grow as other artists reach out and join the initiative!

ANGRY MWANA

Angry Mwana is a fresh new animated series that has gone viral in Zimbabwe. The series lead, Angry Mwana, is an outspoken animated

baby who rants about different social commentary topics that have a side splitting delivery and funny vernacular punchlines.

The Angry Mwana cast is slowly growing to include other characters as the series progresses. We hope to develop Angry Mwana into a regional

brand across the continent.

Page 9: #Nafuna 2014 Vol. 1

Angry Mwana was released at first as a 4 episode test where each

episode would average 30 seconds in length. After a successful initial release, the lead character was

re developed and re designed to better handle the different tasks and allow for better animation.

The new Angry Mwana episodes are in production and we’re looking forward to a really fantastic season.

Angry Mwana will start it’s life as part of the larger “Nafuna Show”

as well as being released as programme fillers for TV and as

Internet viral content.

Over time, Angry Mwana will grow into it’s very own animated TV show

that will be longer than it’s current length. Merchandising and games

are in the pipeline too.
