Key Activities:

The main activities are aligned to Feed the Future development aspects;

i) Address poverty reduction and food security

ii) Promote increased income for address and reduced hunger and nutrition

Engagement of private sectors and facilitate improved domestic and regional trade;

iii) Support inclusion of the women and youth engagement in the value chain in the rice and maize sub-sector

iv) Support rural household (vulnerable communities) engagement in the value chains to enhance nutrition and improved consumption of a quality diet.

Productivity Component : Key activities;

The key activities under NAFAKA Component 1 and and centered

on intermediate results(IR1) are;

1. GAP demonstration plots establishment & management

2. TOT training for Village based Extension Agents: VBAAs, Agro-

dealers, Lead Farmers

3. Strengthening the commercial capacity of hub- Agro-dealers to

manage network of VBAAs, associations as sales agents

4. Supporting Quality declared Seeds production in collaboration

with TOSCI and District Councils

The Approach of Markets and Trade

The approach is responds to the key activities implemented;

1. Improved Market Efficiency;• Engagement of all key players in the value chain including

the private sector key players; i. Farmer associations/ cooperatives, irrigators associations

ii. Buyers/traders,

iii. Processors, millers

iv. Services; banks, MFIs, transporters and business devp services providers.

• Facilitate maize sales to NFRA in collaboration with WFP/P4P

2. Improved Access to Business Development and Affordable Financial and Risk Mgt.• Economies of scale access to inputs (small holder farmers

• Facilitate cereal banking (Association and SACCOs) • Iringa University will promote SACCOs and AMCOs

Current Work through Iringa University

• The Grant of 324,000,000 TZS ($177,000) granted by NAFAKA (USAID FtF)

• This grant will fund• 3 new SACCOS• Work on 20 new AMCOS• To increase outreach from 3000 to 3770 SACCOs members• Capacity building of 23 SACCOs and 20 AMCOS

Other Issues to integrate will be; Increase productivity and trade Increase quality of maize and rice for nutrition Integrate gender (women and youth) in the value chain

Focus of Activities During 2015

To scale up trade and market efficiency;

• Support Private sectors actors to link with producers Mbeya rice

and maize producers; 3 processors in Southern Highlands will

engage with 3,315 (1000+1025 1290) small holders producers

of maize and rice

• One input supplier enterprise in Mbeya will link with 1240 for

extension and proving access to inputs

• Coop organizations AMCOs/SACCOs capacity enhancements

to provide PHHS/Milling and credit

Scale-up GAP training & Input supply Interventions

• Through IFDC, promote input supply for investment of key

technologies and inputs for 200 demonstration plots in Iringa and

Mbeya.

• Adoption of GAP; IFDC will identify key agro-dealers to strengthen

their linkages to farmer groups/AMCOS

associations, Irrigators Ass.

• IFDC structures and provide trainings, support to build the distribution

channel partners for inputs.

• VBAA-Agro-dealers Associations Training – will target Mbeya rural,

Mbozi, Mbarali and rungwe districts
