Perth—we owe her special thanks.VIOLA AS SOLO nisrizumznr. ". . .no Mr. Bay: cl‘ _s Artist . ,kl" 12%‘! '1 1Mr. David Powell, iormerly wn as ‘one oi our leading violinists oi theyounger generation but now primarily de-voted to theviolins bigger and more‘ modest-voiced brother, the viola, made onSaturday his rst appearance as soloistsince his retum from England, a. iewmonths ago. He and Miss Gertrude Hut<ton shared the Kylie Club'sprogrammebetween them, with Miss Flora Bunningas collaborator at the piano. In addition to their separate perform-ances, Mr. Powell and Miss Hutton wereheard together, in the two lovely songs ofBrahms which include a violapart, “Ges-tllite sehnsucht" and "GelstlichesWiegenlied." Miss Hutton sang thesevery beautifully, and in particular thesecond, the "Cradle Song of the Virgin,"made a deeply satisfying impression. Thesinger's tender meme. voeehere, contrast-ing with passages of fuller-toned teeling.was most admirable.Mr. Powell, as always, the serious-minded, soundly equipped artist, deman-strated convincingly his mnstery oi theviola and the instrument‘;distinctiveeloquence and poetry as a solo voice. Hebegan with a ne sonata (originally forviolin) by Henry Eccles, s. contemporary0! Purcell. In the Brahms Sonata in Eat, Op 120, N0. 2, we were stirred especi-ally by the richnobility 0! s solemn long.like pasage which is I central featureoi the second oi’ the three movements.(This sonata. and its companion, No, 1of Op 120, were composed rst Io!‘ clarinetand piano, but Brahms provided alsoalternativeversions with the viola replac-ing the wind instrument). Later in theprogramme Mr. Powell played orange-ments oi’ pieces by three Frenchmen-Chausson, Debussy and Ravel—s.nd alsomusic conceived originally for viola, intheshape of three pieces trorn s suite byYaughan Williams, for viola and orches-ra.Miss Hutton sang also English songsand Lieder. For her masterly presenta-tion oi one oi Purcell's vigorous bravurasongs, “Hark, the echoingair"—which wecannot recall having heard before in_ __ _..._ _. -» __ _,

COPYI' 112 Walcott Street,Mount Lawley.W-A-July 23rd 1940.The Manager,A.B.G.,§_E_B '1' H.Dear Sir,I hereby offer my services as a violist, for theconsideration of the Commission when discussing any opening that mayoccurin the permanent orchestras in any State, and will be glad if you would place'my application before the Federal authorities at the earliest opportunity. In a letter dated April 9th 1940 , addressed to the FederalController ofMusic, I outlined my experience both in Perth, and more recentlyin England, where I tudied viola playing under Mr. Bernard Shore, principalviolist in the B.B.C. Symphony Orchestra, so presume there is no need to repeatthoseparticulars. However, for Mr. James perusla, I am enclosing recent Presscritiques on my solo and ensemble work, and would be grateful if you will adda report on last week's broadcast performance (July 15th) of theconcertantefor Violin, viola and orchestra oi’ Mozart by the Perth Concert orchestra, withMr. W. Glassford and myself as soloists. Perhaps, also you would draw Mr. Jamesvattention to the fact that I an now violist in Mr. VaughanHanleyvs A-B.c.String Quartet, and the only member of that combination not in the A.B.C.At the moment, I am receiving a certain amount of work fromthe Commission, but much of that will disappear with the end of thecelebrityOrchestral Concerts, and it does seem unfair, that, with the generallyaclcnowledged lack of good violists in Australia, and after my having spentmuch time and money in specialising, there should be no opening forme.Thanking you for your consideration,I am,Yours faithfully,David Powell (Signed) ‘Y

——< I ~ 1_ , _ con 12.1. ‘\ I.1 ll2 Walcott Street,~ Mount Lawley,Perth. ILA.April, llth 1960.I.G.J'ames Esq. ,Federal Controller of Music,Australian Broadcasting Commission.Dear Ir. James,I expect you will remember my meetingyou at the A.B.C.office at Australia House, at the end of August, last year.Unfortunately, owing to the outbreak of war, you were unableto grant me another interview before you left for America. With a good library of viola andchanber music, I returnedfrom Lond an about three weeks ago, and thought it better towrite to you direct, for advice regarding employment at thepresent time. Is there likely to be any increase in the PerthLight Orchestra, or if Itravel Bast, is there anywhere thatthe Commission can use my services? At the moment, I en en-Qaged for Professor Schneevoigt's season of three weeks. Hat-urally, Ir. Roberts wants me to stay in Perth, but six Cel-ebrityConcerts and a few odd studio engagements are not enoughto keep ne here, as there is no work outside the Commission'sactivities. As to chamber music, the lack of a capable 'cell-ist, outside of the permanent orchestra, sakes itpractically_ impossible to fom a combination for broadcasting or anything else.As regards aw experience, during the pest twelve years orso, I have practised as a violinist and violist, latterly concen-trating on the viola. When Ir.Hyman Leaner was in Perth, Ibecame violist in the string quartet which he formed, and whichgave a very successful public recital and a number of broadcastsfor the A.B.C. Prior to my sojourn in England, I hadbroadcastfrequently, both solo and chamber music, and had played in theorchestra for all the Commission's Celebrity Concerts, originallyas violinist, but in 1937, at Ir. E.J'.Robex-ta request, changedto viola. Apart from this, theCommission engag-d me as firstextra for all augnented studio performances. During the auditionsconducted by yourself in November 1937, Ir. I. Clesseford and Iplayed Mona:-t's Concertante for Violin Viola and Orchestra, and‘received a very favourable report. In 1938 I decided to go to London for extra study on theviola, and to gain further experience. This I did, studyingwith Ir. Bernard Shore, Principal Viclist in the B.B.C. Symphony Or-chestra, at thesame time doing work, playing on several occ-asions with the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Henry Wood
