ONe miSSiON, mANy WAyS Our mission is to nourish the world. To do it, we work alongside farmers, producers, manufacturers, retailers, governments and organisations, creating efficiencies, developing innovations and helping communities thrive. And this commitment to feeding the world is realised in a responsible way, focused on reducing environmental impact and enriching the communities where we live and work. FOOD We produce and deliver top-quality ingredients, meat and poultry products to manufacturers, food service companies and retailers. Our work creates competitive advantages for our customers in the marketplace, helping them adapt to changing food preferences and to improve the nutritional profiles of their products. By leveraging our extensive research, development and innovation capabilities—as well as our complex supply chain management expertise—our customers are able to expand their reach, enhance their offerings, create operational efficiencies and increase profits.

AgRiCultuRe Our agricultural commodities are as diverse as the ways we use them. Cargill buys, processes and distributes grain, oilseeds and other commodities to makers of food, food ingredients and animal nutrition systems. Products and services are also provided direct to crop and livestock producers, helping them reach higher yields of better-quality products. We then make connections between markets based on supply and demand, moving food and agricultural products from places of surplus to places of need. iNDuStRiAl Cargill’s industrial businesses work with customers in the energy, salt, starch and steel arenas. We also develop and market sustainable products made from renewable agricultural materials, such as vegetable oils. This portfolio of nature-based products replaces petroleum-based products and other non-renewable ingredients, rendering our industrial applications safer, more effective and reliable for both long-term supply and environmental sustainability. FiNANCiAl Cargill provides risk management and financial solutions to agriculture, food, financial and energy companies across the globe. We analyse their unique needs, identify commodity price risk exposures, then develop tailored products that create value for the customer and mitigate vulnerabilities.

Our various enterprises are united by our purpose: we find ways to create new markets and improve existing ones—making safe, nutritious, affordable and accessible food available to the people who need it.

Providing a responsible platform for growth

In ways big and small, Cargill is shaping the world into a more interconnected place—it’s an undertaking that comes with great responsibility. The work we do calls for thought leadership and deep awareness of complex social, economic and environmental concerns.

FOOD SeCuRity Food security exists when everyone has access to safe, nutritious, affordable food—with consistency. It’s the world’s greatest solvable issue, as the problem is not the existence of enough food, but uneven access to it. Achieving food security is a long-term journey that requires education, greater efficiency, perpetual effort and the establishment of trust between countries for successful free trade. We work with organisations in the commercial, non-profit and government sectors to enable open markets, train and equip farmers, stimulate local economies and move food to the places where it’s needed. ReSPONSiBle SuPPly CHAiNS We employ our expertise in managing integrated, inclusive supply chains that not only function well, but also function responsibly. At Cargill, a responsible supply chain is defined by many criteria: it respects people and human rights; produces safe and wholesome food; treats animals humanely; promotes the best, most responsible agricultural practices; and reduces environmental impact—protecting land and conserving scarce resources. It also creates economic value: driving efficiencies, reducing waste and increasing yields.

Our ocean transport vessels equip us to move food and agricultural products in mass quantities on a global scale.

in the Horn of Africa, over 10,000 metric tonnes of rice are donated and delivered to people in need.

FOOD SAFety Our definition of food safety is simple: protecting people and animals from illness or injury as a result of handling or consuming the food that we produce and distribute. From development to consumption, it’s an intricate process that involves micro-precision on a mass scale. We work across our supply chains in all of our geographies to ensure that our products are made with safety and integrity. WORkPlACe SAFety From farms to labs, kitchens to processing plants, the environments where our employees work are as varied as our offerings. The promise of respect that we make to our partners also extends to our team—Cargill aims to ensure its workplaces are safe and healthy spaces. We’re enhancing our safety programming with Focus on LIFE (Life-altering Injury & Fatality Elimination), a series of measures that identifies and addresses safety risks which may be hidden within our tasks. We’re intently focused on protecting the health and safety of all those who work for us.

eNViRONmeNtAl SuStAiNABility Our employees are committed to environmental stewardship. A focus on sustainability has helped to define some of our biggest goals for the future: improving energy and freshwater efficiencies, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting biodiversity, conserving forests and using renewable resources. COmmuNity eNgAgemeNt Helping a community thrive is our greatest and most gratifying form of success. Beyond their defined roles, a majority of our employees volunteer in their communities through Cargill Cares Councils, small teams that implement strategic involvement on a local level—from building schools to aiding in disaster relief. Today, more than 350 councils operate in over 65 countries, resulting in more vibrant, stable communities across the map.

Around the world, Cargill unites food industries, governments, non-profits and academia for Learning Journeys. in Brazil, more than 80 people gather to discuss challenges and develop solutions for improving soy sustainability.

We established our specialisation in crushing and refining in 1960—soon expanding into other industries. Our soy crushing plant in Tarragona, Spain, was the first built by Cargill beyond the borders of the US, prompting the construction of several more facilities in the years to come. Piensos Hens, the company’s first animal feed company in Spain, began operating in Reus, Zaragoza and L’Hospitalet, and by the 1970s, a second soy crushing facility was established in Barcelona—signaling our increasing success in the Spanish crushing industry.

By the mid-80s, the crushing process had been applied to sunflower meal as well. The crushing, refining and bottling of sunflower oil became a centerpiece of the Cargill Spain portfolio, as did malt production based out of Madrid.

To the west, Portugal saw increasing import and export activity at its ports along the Atlantic. Feed plant, grain and protein emerged as major trading entities for the Portuguese business, prompting the establishment of facilities in the capital city of Lisbon, positioned along the Tagus River.

Mirroring the establishment of Cargill as a company over 150 years ago, the story of success in Spain and Portugal also begins with a seed.

Our crushing facility in Barcelona processes more than 65,000 metric tonnes of soy each month for a range of customers across Spain and Portugal.

At the turn of the 21st century, a signifi cant shift occurred in our business— and with it, exponential growth. In 2000, Cargill began casting increased emphasis on food and food ingredients. The acquisition of Agribrands and Degussa Food Ingredients—two leaders in the food and nutritional systems arena—and Cerestar, Europe’s premier producer of starches and sweeteners, strengthened our portfolio and steered the course of our work, prompting initiatives like a collaboration with a local olive oil cooperative to distribute specialty Spanish olive oil in a global capacity.

Another key acquisition occurred in 2011 with the purchase of Provimi, a global animal feed producer with an 85-year heritage. The milestone renewed our longstanding relations in the animal nutrition sector, and today, we serve the industry out of our locations in Ovar and Alverca do Ribatejo in Portugal, as well as facilities in Colmenar Viejo and Mequinenza in Spain.

In nearby Martorell, Cargill Spain & Portugal’s headquarters is home to our starches and sweeteners production, positioned with close proximity to many of our operations serving grain and oilseeds, refi ned oils, texturizing solutions and malt.

From southwest Portugal to northeast Spain, our presence is widespread by design—strategically positioned to create effi ciencies, cultivate partnerships and optimise our supply chains in the local and global marketplace.

Creating & optimising markets throughout europe

60s Cargill Spain is established in Tarragona, where soy crushing and refining begins. Consistent access to this high-protein soy inspires our entry into the local poultry market as well.

Within the decade, crushing and refining extends to sunflower seeds, housed in a facility in Reus. By the late 1960s, Cargill also begins importing and exporting cereals.

70s The soy crushing business extends to a second location in Barcelona’s ports—a move that strategically positions Cargill along the Mediterranean Sea. Our operations in the feed compound business are established upon the acquisition of Piensos Hens. With expertise in feed formulation, our work plays a major role in the professionalisation of the compound industry across Spain and Portugal.

80s Substantial growth in the sunflower seed market expands Cargill’s crushing, refining and bottling operations at facilities in Sevilla. To further develop the industry, we begin training local farmers in sunflower harvesting, helping them bring quality oilseed to market for various customers.

Page 17: Na 31725868

We broke ground as pioneers in the international oilseeds industry. Decade by decade, our teams have led major advancements across a range of markets—all contributing to Cargill’s long legacy of positioning stakeholders for lasting success.

90sCargill and Vandemoortele establish Associated Oil Packers (AOP) in Sevilla, a joint venture to support their bottling business. The partnership improves market access for both smallholder oilseed farmers and domestic customers.

In Madrid, a similar support system is established for malting barley cultivators—and malt production officially begins.

2000s A growing emphasis on food and food ingredients prompts the acquisitions of Agribrands, Degussa Food Ingredients and Cerestar. By enlarging our portfolio, we introduce more nourishing, value-added products to the Spanish and Portuguese food industries.

today In Spain and Portugal, Cargill acquires Provimi, the world leader in animal feed and customised animal nutrition solutions. It is the latest development in our ongoing mission to fulfill unique needs and improve lives through product innovation.

From world-renowned olive oil to innovative animal nutrition solutions, our broad collection of businesses reflects the unique traditions and global influence of Spain and Portugal.

Offering a diverse, localised portfolio

grain & OilseedsCargill began with a single grain warehouse, and to this day, grain remains a cornerstone of our global enterprise. Our grain and oilseeds business sources, trades, processes and distributes a broad portfolio including wheat, corn, barley, Sorghum, sunflower seeds, rapeseeds and soybeans, as well as vegetable oils, meals and biodiesels. We’ve developed a renowned expertise in supply chain management of identity-preserved and differentiated products in overseas markets, working closely with Cargill’s ocean transportation business to optimise flexibility and efficiency, and with our trade and structured finance business to provide unique financing and

hedging solutions. Our work in the grain and oilseeds industry crosses oceans and connects hemispheres, reflecting the Cargill mission to operate globally and impact locally.

In Spain, our beginnings in soybeans, citrus pulp and tapioca have evolved significantly. Today, our grain and oilseeds business runs commercial offices in Sant Cugat del Vallès, Zaragoza, as well as three key operations: in La Roda, we oversee in-land silos; in Reus, we crush sunflower seeds; and in Barcelona, we manage a large-scale soy plant with crushing capacity that supplies the country’s major feed compounders, helping provide feed to animals across the country.

Our business in Spain stands as the regional leader in import and distribution of quality raw materials, ranging from grains, mid-protein meals, soy meal, soybeans and sunflower seeds to crude and refined oils. Most recently, we added biodiesel to our offerings, now distributing sustainable fuel throughout the Mediterranean basin.

Starches & SweetenersOur starches and sweeteners business processes corn and wheat to manufacture a comprehensive collection of value-added products dedicated to the food and beverage, papermaking, corrugating, bio-industrial, pharmaceutical, personal care and animal nutrition industries.

Within each of these categories, we enhance customer relationships and fuel sustainable market share growth. In the nutrition space, we focus on fibre and protein innovations, while our industrial offerings are designed to offer renewable solutions that drive value for our customers. Our portfolio of sweetness products is the largest and most diverse on the market, ranging from foundation sweeteners (glucose-fructose syrups and dextroses) to low-caloric polyols and zero-calorie, stevia-based sweeteners. For our pure-quality alcohol and pharmaceutical businesses, operating reliable supply chains has enabled us to consistently deliver the best possible value to the customers we serve.

In 1965, our starches and sweeteners business in Spain and Portugal began with the establishment of a wet corn milling plant in Martorell, which stands today as Cargill’s worldwide headquarters for the production of an extremely pure formulation of carbohydrate, used in the medicinal sector for intravenous and oral applications. Often combining our offerings with those from neighbouring Cargill operations in Spain and Portugal, our team provides an expansive catalogue of high-quality products and cost-effective solutions to the markets we serve. Our sales and technical teams are globally connected, enabling them to exceed expectations at the local level—not only meeting our customers’ unique needs, but also helping them thrive.

texturizing SolutionsCargill’s texturizing solutions business specialises in the production of texturizing ingredients that link the core food-building blocks (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and water) into finished foods and beverages. Our nature-derived ingredients portfolio is comprised of extracts from major crops (starches, soy proteins and lecithins), seaweeds (carrageenans and alginates), fruits (pectins and locust bean gum) and sugar fermentation (xanthan gum). These specialised ingredients are also applied to offerings in the personal care, pharmaceutical and industrial categories. Through our expertise in origination, global supply chains, research and formulation, we help our customers achieve consistent product quality at an affordable price. In Spain, our texturizing solutions are commercialised through a dedicated team of commercial and technical specialists, supported by a wide-reaching network of distributors. These tailored solutions and services are then delivered to dairy, meat, confectionary and bakery manufacturers across Spain and Portugal.

20% share increase in the sugar-free chewing gum market in first two years

“It’s been a major success. We’ve strengthened our competitive advantage.” JOSÉ mORAtA Marketing Manager / Sanchez Cano

After three decades of sourcing core products from Cargill, Spanish confectionary company Sanchez Cano turned to us again—this time, with an entirely new initiative: a sugar-free chewing gum recipe for Fini. It was a major undertaking that called for close collaboration at an accelerated pace. Because the product would be distributed globally—to countries with disparate temperatures and humidities— it would require a high degree of stability (without affecting flavour and texture). For 17 months, a multidisciplinary team of Cargill and Sanchez Cano experts explored countless formula iterations before landing on a recipe from Cargill’s polyols portfolio. Containing a unique combination of sorbitol, maltitol and isomalt—sugar alcohols with low-caloric sweeteners—the product premiered to great success, rivaling other well-recognised brands and achieving a 20% increase in sugar-free chewing gum market share during its first two years.

Achieved on-time and on-budget, Fini stands as a testament to big ideas realised through expertise and innovation. “It’s been a major success for us,” said José Morata, Sanchez Cano’s Marketing Manager. “Today, our product is available across Europe, North America and South America—and we hope to continue gaining ground in the years to come.”

Launching a new brand in a competitive market has its risks, but Sanchez Cano saw it as a chance worth taking.

In 1981, MC Rios—a Portuguese agribusiness distributor headquartered in Albergaria—turned to Cargill’s animal nutrition division for support in consolidating their agribusiness and expanding their work within the animal feed sector, which accounts for more than 50% of annual revenue.

Understanding market requirements, product trends and customer preferences, we launched Rural Refresh, two new product lines for distributors rooted in technological research, specific consumer requests and unsatisfied needs. The offerings were immediately leveraged by MC Rios. By providing accurate, technology-based nutrition systems, we helped MC Rios improve animal diets, satisfying the intake and health security demands from their backyard farmers, as well as optimising the conversion rates and product return from both professional producers and dairy cows.

“Cargill’s resourceful approach to feed health and safety and their constant search for excellence are critical, differentiating factors,” said Carlos Rios, who owns MC Rios. “It makes us believe in superior performance and the opportunity for future success.”

The food we eat in our first months of life is perhaps the most important nourishment we receive in our lifetime. Early nutrition shapes our development—both physically and cognitively—and can set the tone for long-term health, reaching well into adulthood. Infants require food with high energy content, which is found naturally in breast milk and via vegetable oils in feeding formulas.

Brand awareness in the infant feed market is quite significant—mothers seek a product with functional ingredients, such as fat formulas that facilitate digestion, and strong adherence to industry health standards. The segment is strictly regulated, requiring close, precise control of the supply chain to eliminate contaminants and perpetual awareness of changing regulations.

Recognising an opportunity to create a distinct offering in the market, two of our business units joined forces, leveraging the broad scope of oil blends crushed and refined on-site in our Spain facilities. With a dedicated technical team staying current on regulatory updates and developing tailor-made solutions, our approach has proven to be the most reliable, long-term and cost-efficient in the industry.

Feeding formula is one of the most highly regulated segments in the market—and Cargill stands as manufacturers’ partner of choice.

Environmentally unsustainable and notoriously unpredictable in price—the case against soy had become clear, forcing a major aqua feed manufacturer to diversify its feed ingredients (and fast). The customer provided Cargill with their specifications, explaining that the new ingredient needed to be non-genetically modified— a critical distinguisher in their image-conscious market—without compromising the performance of their feed.

Pulling from a variety of disciplines—research and development, food science, animal nutrition—we compiled a core team of experts, developing a high-protein sunflower meal to replace soy as the new product base in their formula. The formulation offered ultra-high protein levels, minimal fibre and, unlike soy, zero anti-nutritional factors.

The revamped product was delivered in just six months, allowing the manufacturer to swiftly reduce its reliance on soy and reduce production costs. The project has led to new plans in other parts of Europe—our customer intends to replicate the success of this partnership again and again.

Cargill helps a major producer quickly phase out an unsustainable, price-volatile ingredient.

For many Cargill employees, volunteering with the Barcelona Food Bank is a full-time commitment. Leveraging their food industry connections, our teams help to recover food from retailers and suppliers, then deliver it to the Barcelona Food Bank where it’s distributed to hundreds of thousands of people living in low-income communities across the city. In 2013, a persisting problem was addressed by our team: for every meal served, dozens went to waste due to an inability to keep mass quantities of perishable food refrigerated until preparation. Using donated funds and volunteered manpower, we built a walk-in refrigerator that “ensures the cold chain,” keeping perishables properly chilled and safe until preparation time.

“The food banks really appreciate our support,” said Joana Tavares, a trading accountant at Cargill’s Sant Cugat del Vallès operations. “Getting our employees directly involved helps us make a real connection.” The addition has significantly improved the Barcelona Food Bank’s operational capacity. Nearly 27 metric tonnes of additional perishable food can now be stored in the new walk-in refrigerator—amounting to wholesome, safe meals for over 150,000 people in need.

An innovative refrigerator improves food storage, eliminating waste to feed thousands more.

Supporting the Down tarragona Association

Each year, hundreds of Cargill volunteers from across Spain and Portugal unite as members of the Cargill Cares Council, an employee-led programme that implements strategic community involvement where it’s needed most. In Spain, a major focus for these efforts is the Down Tarragona Association, a non-profit formed in 2007 that improves the quality of life for children with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities.

Our participation with Down Tarragona takes many forms—from financial contributions to on-the-ground activities like the Annual Cargill Big Walk, a fundraiser first held in 2007 that champions a new non-governmental organisation each year.

In the autumn of 2013, a record total of 233 Cargill employees participated in support of Down Tarragona, raising more than 5,500 euros for Agafat al 21, a reintegration programme designed to help 35 young adults with Down syndrome assimilate into social and professional settings. Funds raised throughout the year by our team also contribute to improvements at Down Tarragona’s headquarters in Reus—specifically the revamp of its developmental “sensorial hall,” a unique space designed to engage sight, smell, sound, taste and touch as a means of brain stimulation and socialisation.

Our team is working beyond the walls of Down Tarragona’s facility, too—hundreds of volunteers have rolled up their sleeves to protect and enhance the environment, tending to gardens, planting trees and cleaning up the area parks that surround Spain’s disabled children facilities.

Spain’s Cargill Cares Council connects with an organisation that’s enabling children with Down syndrome to thrive.
