    CAUTIONTemperature Measurement ProbesThisprecisioninstrumenthasbeendesignedforusewiththeextensiverangeofComarktemperatureprobes.Theuseofotherprobesmayimpairtheperformanceandaccuracyoftheinstrument.FulldetailsofComarkprobesandsensorscanbeobtainedfromComarkCustomerSupportdepartmentoryourlocaldistributor.

    ThisinstrumentismanufacturedinaccordancewiththeCompany’sISO9000:2000QualityApprovedSystem.

    CALIBRATION, CERTIFICATION AND SERVICE

    CertificationComarkcanprovidecertificatesofcalibrationforitswholeproductrange,tosuitISO9000andotherqualityassuranceprocedures,foodhygieneregulations,HACCPsandenvironmentalregulations.ComarkcertificatesareproducedbyindependentqualitycontrolledprocesseswhichcompareproductperformanceagainstagreedNationalStandards.ForpeaceofmindandbestpracticeComarkrecommendannualcertification/recalibration.

    Twolevelsofcertificationareavailableforinfra-redtemperatureandnontempera-tureinstruments,excludinghumidity:-UKAScertificatesviaanexternalaccreditedlaboratoryandNPLtraceablecertificatesfromtheComarkcalibrationlaboratory.

    Threelevelsofcertificationareavailableforcontacttemperatureproductsandthesearedetailedhere:

    a) UKAS Temperature CertificationTheComarkUKAS(UnitedKingdomAccreditationService)accreditedtemperaturecalibrationlaboratoryisoneofthefinestintheUK.ComarkUKAScertificatescanofferthelowestuncertaintyof0.01°Candprovideindependentproofofcorrectcalibrationusingequipmentandproce-duresauditedbyUKASinspectors.TheequipmentusedisfullytraceabletotheNationalPhysicalLaboratory.

    b) UKAS Humidity CertificationInadditiontotheComarktemperaturelaboratory,thehumiditylaboratorycontinuesthetraditionofhighaccuracycertificationandawiderange(25%to90%RH)withuncertaintiesof2.8%ofreading.ThisrangealsoincludesDewpointmeasurements.

    c) NPL Traceable CertificationComarkNPLcertificatesaretraceabletotheNationalPhysicalLabora-toryandcanofferuncertaintyaslowas0.3°C.

    ConformanceCertificatesofconformancecanbesuppliedfornew,servicedandrecalibratedinstruments.Theseconfirmthatinstrumentsarewithintheiroriginalmanufacturedspecification.

    1. INTRODUCTION TO THE N9005 AND N9094

    TheN9005andN9094handheldthermometersrepresentaleapforwardinspecificationandperformanceandhaveanumberofnewfeatures.

    BothinstrumentshavetheexistingComarkpremiumcaseforultimatestrengthanddurability.Thisoffersthehighestlevelofstrength,durabilityandprotectionagainstdustandwateringress.TheinstrumentsarecertifiedtomeetIP68.Featuresincludeaclock,countdowntimer,timeralarms,highandlowtemperaturealarms,selectablesensortype,variableauto-offanddatahold.

    2. N9005 AND N9094 THERMOMETERS WITH BIOCOTE® PROTECTION

    BioCote®isasilverbasedanti-microbialagentthatisimpregnatedintotheinstrumentcaseduringmoulding.BioCote®effectivelyinhibitsthefunction,growthandreproductionofawiderangeofmicro-organismsanditsprotectionisincreasinglyacceptedaspartofHACCP,duediligenceandhealthandsafetyprocedurestoreducecrosscontamination.BioCote®protectionlastsforthelifeoftheinstrument,becausetheagentispresentthroughoutthecaseplasticandcannotrubofforbewashedorleachedout.

    Biocote®activeingredientsareregisteredwiththeUSEnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA).

    AlthoughBioCote®inhibitsthegrowthofmicro-organismsontheinstrumentcase,itdoesnotprotectindividualsagainstsuchharmfulorganismsorremovetheneedtomaintainthehigheststandardsofpersonalandproducthygieneandcleanliness.

    4. CONNECTING PROBES TO THE THERMOMETERS

    TheN9094thermometerhasaLumbergsocketforprobeconnectionandofferaclassleadingchoicebetweenComarkthermistor,typeTthermocoupleortypeKthermocoupleprobes.

    TheN9094thermometerwillautomaticallydetectthesensortypeoftheprobeconnected.TheLCDwillthenindicatethermistorprobesas“PST”,andtypeTorKthermocoupleprobesas“T”or“K”.

    TheN9005thermometerhasasub-miniatureconnectorforprobeconectionandoffersthechoicebetweentypeTandtypeKthermocoupleprobes.

    5. SWITCHING ON AND OFF

    Display Test/Mode

    The‘ON/OFF’buttononthekeypadisusedtoswitchonthethermometer.Afterashortpausethedisplaywillshowthecurrentmodeloftheinstrumentandwillthenreverttonormaltemperaturedisplay.ThecurrenttimeisalsopermanentlydisplayedontheLCD.

    6. DATA HOLD

    TheN9005andN9094thermometershaveadataholdfacility.Ifthe‘II’buttonispressedatanytimeduringnormaltemperaturemode,thecurrenttemperaturewillbeheldonthedisplay.Toreleasepress‘II’.

    7. COUNTDOWN TIMER

    TheN9005andN9094thermometershaveacountdowntimer.ThisfunctionisactivatedfromtheSetUpMenu–seesectionbelow,andcanbecalibratedinseconds/minutesorhours.Pressingthecountdowntimerbuttonwillstartthisfunction.Pressingthebuttonagainduringthecountdownperiodwillstopthecount.Theinstrumentwillbeepfor30secondsattheendofacountdownperiodtoindicatetotheuserthatithasbeencompleted.

    8. AUTO SWITCH OFF/POWER SAVING MODE

    TheN9005andN9094thermometershaveaselectableauto-switchofffeature.Thisissetto3minutesfromthefactory.PleaserefertoSetUpMenuforinstructionsonchangingthissetting.

    9. SET UP MENU

    TheN9005andN9094thermometershaveahiddenmenustructurethatisusedtosetupanumberofparameterswithintheinstrument.

    TheSetUpMenucanbeenteredwhentheinstrumentisswitchedon.

    Iftheinstrumentisalreadyon,itmustbeturnedoff.

    Pressthecountdownbuttonandkeepthishelddownwhilepressingtheonbuttontoswitchtheinstrumenton.Afterthethermometerhascompleteditsself-checks,itwillenterthemenu.

    N.B.AftereachmenuitemusetheON/OFFbuttontosaveandmovetothenextmenuitem.

    Clockselectionisthefirstiteminthemenu:

    9.1 Clock – the display will show ‘CLOC’

    Usethecountdowntimerbuttonandtheholdbuttontoadjusttheclocktimeupordown.Theclockitselfisa12hourclockwithsettingforAMorPM.Movingthrough12noonwillchangetheclockfromAMtoPMandsoon.

    9.2 Countdown Timer – the display will show ‘Cd’

    Usethecountdowntimerbuttonandtheholdbuttontoselecttimeronoroff.Usetheholdandcountdowntimerbuttonstoscrollupanddowninsecondsupto5minutesthenin1minuteintervalsupto24hours.

    9.3 Scale – the display will show ‘SCAL’

    AfterenteringtheSCALEmenu,usethecountdowntimerbuttonandtheholdbuttontoscrollbetweentheavailablescales.

    9.4 Type – the display will show ‘tYPE’

    UseeitherthecountdowntimerbuttonortheholdbuttontoscrollbetweenthermistorsensorspluseithertypeTorKthermocouples.ThedefaultisthermistorandtypeT,withthelatterforprobeswithbrownorblueleads.ThermistorandtypeKisavailableforprobeswitheitherredorgreenleads.

    9.5 High Alarm – the display will show ‘HIAL’

    Usethecountdownbuttonandtheholdbuttontoselecthighalarmonoroff.UsetheholdandcountdowntimerbuttonstoscrollupordownindegreesCorFtothelimitsofthechosenthermocoupletype.

    9.5 Low Alarm – the display will show ‘LOAL’

    Usethecountdownbuttonandtheholdbuttontoselectlowalarmonoroff.UsetheholdandcountdowntimerbuttonstoscrollupordownindegreesCorFtothelimitsofthechosenthermocoupletype.

    9.7 Auto Power OFF – the display will show ‘AOFF’

    Usethecountdowntimerbuttonandtheholdbuttontoscrollbetweentheavailableoptionsof3,10,30minutes.

    9.8 Clock Alarms

    Usethecountdownbuttonandtheholdbuttontoselectclockalarm1,onoroff.Useholdandcountdowntimerbuttonstosetthealarmtime-12hourclock.Repeatforalarms2and3.

    9.9 Resolution

    Usethecountdownandtheholdbuttontoselectordeselecttemperaturedisplayinhighresolution0.1°orlowresolution1°.

    10. BEFORE USING YOUR THERMOMETER

    Beforeusingthethermometermakesureyouhavetherightprobeforthejob.Therearespecificprobesformeasuringproduct,air,‘betweenpack’,surfaceanddeepfattemperatures.Forpermanentinstallationthereisalsoachoiceof‘damped’sensorsandfoodsimulants.

    TheN9094iscompatiblewiththermistorandtypeTandKthermocouplesensorstogiveultimatesystemaccuracyandfastestspeedofresponse.ItiscompatiblewithallexistingN9091/N9092probesandthermistortestcaps.Itselfconfigurestotheparticularsensortype.Allyouhavetodoischoosetherightprobeforthejob.

    TheN9005iscompatiblewithallindustrystandardtypeTandtypeKprobeswithsub-miniatureconnectors.

    BoththeN9005andtheN9094canbetestedusingaC9040thermocouplesimulator.(C9040KtypeKsub-miniature,C9040TMtypeTsub-miniatureandC9040TLtypeTLumberg).

    Beforemeasuringproducttemperaturesmakesurethattheprobeisadequatelycleaned.Usebactericidalwipes(PW175T-Tubof175probewipesorPW70T-tubof70probewipes)orimmersetheshaftinasuitablefoodqualitysterilisingsolution.Remembertoreadtheinstructionscarefullyandallowthespecifiedtime.

    Thermometersneedtobecheckedatregularintervalstoconfirmthattheiraccuracyiswithinspecification.Itisrecommendedthatthermometersareregularlychecked(everythreemonths).TheN9094canbecheckedbycomparingthemeasuredreadingwithacertifiedtestcap.

    ComarktestcapsallowyoutocheckN9094instrumentaccuracyatspecificpointstoimproveyourconfidenceinthemeasurement.Thesecanbeusedonafrequentbasisifrequired.

    N9005andN9094thermometersandtheirprobescanalsoberegularlycheckedusingmeltingice.Simplyuseabeakerfulloficecubes,addcoldwaterandstirforafewminutes.Insertthepenetrationprobeandstiritforafurthertwominutes.Thethermometershouldthenreadbetween–0.5°Cand+0.5°C.TheaccuracycanbecheckedagainstareferencethermometersuchastheKM20REF.Makesureyouusesufficienticecubesandstirlongenoughforthewatertocooldownproperly.

    Shouldyouwishtochecktheaccuracyofyourthermometeratothertemperaturesitismoredifficultwithoutsophisticatedequipment.

    IfyouintendtouseyourthermometertocheckotherequipmentorprocessesaspartofaBS5750/ISO9000procedureortocheckcompliancewithothercodesofpractice,youmayrequireeitherUKASorNationalStandardscertification.Comarkcanoffercalibrationtobothstandards.PleasecontactourUKASaccreditedlaboratoryforfurtherdetails.

    11. TAKING A TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT

    Positiontheprobeintheplaceyouwishtotakethemeasurementandrecordareadingwhenthetemperaturehasstabilised.

    Note: Donotexposethermistorprobestotemperaturesoutsidetherange–80°Cto+150°Candavoidthermallyshockingprobesbyrapidheatingorcooling.

    12. PROBE SELECTION

    Penetration ProbesForproducttemperaturesusethestainlesssteel‘penetration’probe.Inserttheprobeatleast25mmintotheproductorpreferablytothecentreoftheproduct.Allowsufficienttimeforthereadingtostabilise.Typicallyyouwillneedtowait30secondsinaliquidandupto2minutesinadrypowder.Trysomeexperimentsyourself.

    Note:Toavoidcrosscontaminationproperlycleanyourprobeaftereachmeasurement. Order: Thermistor - PX22L (White cap), PX23L (Red cap), PX24L (Green cap) or PX25L (Blue cap) Thermocouple - PK24M, PT22M

    Fast Air ProbeForairtemperaturesalwaysusethefastresponseairprobes.Trytoplacetheprobeinamovingairflow,orifyoucanwavetheprobearoundtospeeduptheresponse.(Stillairisaverygoodthermalinsulatorsoinaclosedrefrigeratoryoumayneedtowaitminutesforthereadingstofinallystabilise).Order: AK28M

    Between Pack ProbeForfasttemperaturechecksofpackagedgoodswithoutdamagingthepack,thisflexibleprobeshouldbeplacedbetweentwosimilarpacks.Itcanbeshapedtoexactlyfittherequiredsurfaces. Order ST23L

    Deep Fat ProbeFortemperaturemeasurementindeepfatfryers.Thisprobeismadefromaveryflexiblematerialthatcanbereshapedtimeandtimeagain.Cranktheshaftoftheprobesothatthefattemperaturecanbemeasuredwithoutyourhandneedingtobeabovethefatitself.Nevertakethemeasurementwithyourhanddirectlyabovethefat.Takeadequateprecautions.Remembertheprobewillbeveryhotonwithdrawalfromthefat.Order: IT21L

    Pallet ProbeThisprobeallowsthemeasurementofthetemperatureofcartonsonapallet.Bycarefullyslidingtheflattenedsurfacesoftheprobebetweenadjacentcartonstheirtemperaturecanbesampledwithouttheneedtounstackthepallet. Order: ST38L

    Food Simulant ProbeThesimulanthasbeendesignedtoreplicatethetemperaturecharacteristicsofthemosttemperaturesensitivepackagedfood.Leftpermanentlyinplaceitgivesultimateconfidencethatthemostrepresentativemethodofmonitoringisbeingused.Order: DX31L

    13. CARE OF THE THERMOMETER

    WARNING

    TheN9005andN9094thermometersaredustandwaterproofasstatedinthespecificationsandwillwithstandharshenvironments.Useadampclothorwarmsoapywatertoremovedepositsandpreventthemfromhardeningorbecomingsticky.Donotusesolvent-basedcleanersormethylatedspirits,etc.

    Caution:Donotplaceanythermometerinadishwasher.

    Never use the thermometer/probes:-

    Tomeasurethetemperatureoflivepowerconductors

    Tolift,leverorhammer

    Inamicrowaveoven…thedoorwillnotcloseproperlyandthemicrowaveradiationcoulddamagethethermometerandoven

    Inanormaloven…theplasticpartsmaymelt

    Don’ttrytocleantheplasticcaseorprobehandlewithanyformofsolvent...itmayattacktheplasticorcauseittobecomebrittle.Itisjustaseffectivetouseadampclothandnormalkitchencleaner…regularly.

    Don’tforgettoregularlycheckyourthermometer.Trytobuildcrosschecksintoyoureverydayoperationssothatpotentialproblemsareimmediatelyidentified.

    Always:

    Keepyourinstrumentandprobeclean.

    Usethecorrectprobefortheparticularjob.

    Removethebatteryifyouarestoringyourinstrumentforlongperiods.

    Takecarewheninsertingthepenetrationprobeintohardsubstances.Thesharppointcaneasilypenetrateflesh.keeprecordsofthetemperaturesyouhavemeasured.Itmayprovideusefulevidenceifthereiseveraproblem.

    14. SEALED FOR LIFE BATTERY

    TheN9005andN9094havealonglifeLithiumcellfittedinsidethesealedbatterycompartmentonthereverseoftheinstrument.Thisisdesignedtolastupto10yearsinnormalusage.HowevershouldthesymbolBATappearsonthedisplaywhenthebatteryvoltagehasreduced.Batteryreplacementisrecommendedatthistime.ThiscanonlybecarriedoutbyComarkorApprovedDistributorsopleasereturntheinstrumentasappropriateforbatteryreplacement.

    Donotattempttochangethebatteryyourselfasthiswillresultindamagetotheinstrumentandalossofwaterproofrating.
