WE ARE REPRESENTED WITH OFFICES AND SUBSI-DIARIES WORLDWIDE.
Nordex N90/2500
New dimensions inthe 3rd generation
N90
Nordex was founded in Give, Denmark, in 1985.So today Nordex can look back on more than 20 yearsof experience in the development, construction andoperation of modern wind turbines. In other words,we know what we are talking about when we designour turbines for a 20 years life time.
Although Nordex has remained true to the Danish
turbine concept, of course much has changed in thefield of engineering since the 80s. In the further deve-lopment of our machines we have always been gui-ded by the principle of continuous improvement. Ourslogan is “Evolution instead of revolution”. Althoughour engineers work with the latest computer-aidedsimulation models, nothing is more instructive thanpractical experience.

A good example of this is the new N90/2500. Thisturbine is a direct further development of our N80/2500kW and N90/2300 kW series, which we have been pro-ducing and operating since 2000 and 2002, respective-ly. Around 200 machines of this series are now* in ope-ration worldwide, onshore and offshore. Some of theseturbines have been installed at very challenging loca-tions - thereby we have been able to gain a great deal
of experience. This wealth of experience has contribu-ted to the optimised N90/2500. The deliberately gene-rous overall design of the N80/N90 series made it pos-sible to increase the nominal output of the new N90 to2500 kW. But the modifications also relate to many otherdetails that have a positive effect on the turbines yieldand reliability: Some examples:
All-location turbine concept for reliable yieldsWith the N90/2500 you opt for a mature product
that has proven itself over and over again. And whatis more, you have several options to choose from. Thenew N90/2500 is designed for locations with strongwinds and locations with light winds, the HS-version(high-speed) is certified according to IEC 1b, the
LS-version (low-speed) according to IEC 2a (80 mtower). Nordex supplies the turbine as a 50 or 60 Hzversion, depending on the country where you wish toconnect your wind park to the grid. The HS version ofthe N90/2500 can also be employed offshore. TheN90/2500 is our all-location turbine concept - youryield guarantee for every wind farm.

Nordex rotor blade production | a N90 blade beside smaller blade generations.
One of the core com-ponents of the N90/2500is the rotor with its diame-ter of 90 metres and asweep of 6362 squaremeters – equivalent to thearea covered by a footballpitch. With these dimensi-ons, the N90 numbersamong the largest onsho-re turbines, making it pos-sible to exploit the maxi-mum amount of energyfrom the wind supply.
But a rotor blade isalso subjected to enor-mous strains. This is whyonly rotor blades fulfillingthe highest standards interms of manufacture andmaterial quality are usedfor the N90/2500. For
example, Nordex produ-ces its blade by means ofthe vacuum-injectionmethod, using a new typeof VAP foil (Vacuum Assi-sted Process; an EADS-Patent), which preventseven the smallest air pok-kets forming in compo-nent structures. In thisprocess glass fibres aresubjected to a vacuum inorder to inject epoxy resininto the fibre material. Thematerial used (glass fibre)is 10 per cent more resi-stant to tensile stress thanconventional fibres. This isthe result of a material testconducted by the Institutfür Materialforschung undAnwendungstechnikDresden, which tests the
material properties of air-bus wings, among otherobjects. In addition to this,Nordex produces the sup-porting structures (struts, stays) separately from theaerodynamic shell inorder to ensure a highdegree of dependability inproduction and qualitycontrol.
Aviation industry as abenchmark
Thanks to the newgeometry of the blade tip,Nordex have made majoradvances with regard tonoise optimisation. Thenew profile has resultedin a significant reductionin noise emissions. One
more special feature: thelarge proportion of alumi-nium in the tip ensures anextremely high level ofprotection against light-ning, providing a safetybonus compared to manyconventional rotor blades.
All the rotor bladetypes used by Nordexhave withstood load testsabove the design thres-hold. Furthermore, Nord-ex conducted extensiveadditional material testswhen developing therotor blade.

For large turbines inthe multi-megawatt classNordex makes use of agearbox-based drive con-cept. In this way it is pos-sible to keep the tower-head mass low and sohave dependable controlof the loads in the systemas a whole. The drive trainconsists of a rotor shaft, which is connected to thegearbox via a shrink-fitcoupling. The speed isincreased and transferredto the generator via acoupler with overload pro-tection in order to be con-verted into correspondin-gly high electrical energy. This principle makes itpossible to use very com-pact subassemblies. Therelatively light weight andsmall volume for theN90/2500 power class alsofacilitates transport andinstallation of the turbine.
Gearbox with reliable torque split
The N90/2500 can besupplied with differentgearboxes. In addition tothe two-stage planetarygearbox with a one-stagespur gear, the option of adifferential gearbox is alsooffered.
Both gearboxes arerelatively compact andreliably convert the highoutput (torque) of largeturbines. This planetarygearbox was first used inthe N80 in the year 2000and has since establisheditself as the standard forlarge turbines on the basisof positive experience.Working principle: thepower transmitted is splitonto the planet wheels inorder to ensure goodtransmission of the powertorque. The power is
brought together again onthe spur wheel.
The torque split isslightly different in the differential gearbox. Withthis gearbox the rotor tor-que is transferred to twoplanetary stages and con-verted, and the two powerlines subsequently reuni-ted in the third planetarystage. Here the torque andspeed are converted againand passed on to thegenerator by the spur-wheel stage.
Heat is removed fromthe gearbox through theoil circuit in an oil/air coo-ler. A pump with two pum-ping stages forces thegearbox oil through acombined filter element(coarse filter 50 μm, finefilter 10 μm) into the coo-ling circuit. The job of thecoarse and fine filters is to
remove solids from thegearbox oil. As an option,an additional ancillaryflow filter system (ultrafi-ne filter 2 μm) can beinstalled.
If the optimal opera-ting temperature has notyet been reached, a ther-mo-bypass returns the oildirectly to the gearbox. Ifthe optimal operatingtemperature of the oil isexceeded, the active oil/airfilter is switched on andthe oil is cooled.
The cooled and filteredoil is carried specifically tothose components sub-jected to high thermalloads and to all thosepoints requiring lubricati-on (bearings, gear teeth, etc.)
DRIVE CONCEPT.
Drive train in the assembly.
Your benefit at a glance:
compact drive trainlow tower-head massguaranteed installation qualitymultimegawatt gearbox designreduced-load operation via drive-train damping
Generator
The N90/2500 is equip-ped with a double-fedasynchronous generator.Nordex has been success-fully using this type ofgenerator for variable-speed machines for manyyears. The principaladvantage of this genera-tor is that only 25 to 30 percent of the energy createdhas to be fed into the elec-tricity grid via a converter. This means that installingthis type of generator/converter system reducesthe total cost of the windpower system.
The heat in thegenerator is transfe-red via an integrated (clo-sed) air-cooling circuit toan air/water heat ex-changer attached to thegenerator. This means thatthe generator is moreeffectively cooled than ina water-jacket cooled gen-erator as the air is able toflow through the rotor andsafely and rapidly dissipa-te the heat generatedthere. The cooling water isthen led to an activewater/air heat exchanger
outsidethe nacelleusing a mainten-ance-free centrifugalpump. This pump is swit-ched on as soon as thetemperature of the coo-ling water ex-ceeds a defi-ned limit. This cools downthe water in the coolingcircuit, and consequentlythat in the generator, tothe optimal operatingtemperature.
The N90/2500 is ope-rated using a newly deve-loped active drive-traindamping system. Thisintelligent control systemmakes it possible to ope-rate the machine at a redu-ced load.

Modern wind turbinesare becoming taller andtaller. There are good rea-sons for this: high abovethe ground the windalways blows strongerand more constantly. Dueto turbulence resultingfrom obstacles on theground (roughness length)the wind quality improveswith increasing height, above all inland. Apartfrom the tower costs, buil-
ding permits often meanthat the limits for adjustingthe hub height are verytight. Typical constructionheight limits are between80 and 100 m. In Germanyhub heights of more than100 metres are becomingincreasingly popular.
This is why Nordex isinitially offering theN90/2500 with hub heightsof 80 and 100 metres. This
puts the rotor sweep in theheight range of 55 to 145metres (100m tower) or 35to 125 metres (80m tower). The 100 metre tower isideal for inland locationswhereas the 80 metrestower is more suitable forlocations near the coast.Tower heights of morethan 100 metres are in pre-paration for 2006, and atower with a hub height of120 metres is at an advan-
ced stage of development.
Tower features: insidethe 100 m tower there arethe lift and working plat-forms. As an option it ispossible to supply a towerwith an integrated trans-former. Corrosion protec-tion of the tubular tower isachieved by means of anepoxy resin coating on thesurface.

Operation control ofthe N90/2500 is effectedusing Nordex Control 2(NC2). This software andhardware controls indivi-dual wind turbines as wellas wind farms or the inter-connected power plants ofdecentralised power utili-ties. NC2 continuously eva-luates all the operating andclimatic data measured, ensuring that the turbineoperates with optimumyield. To do this, Nordexadapts each control systemwith parameters specific tothe machine and location. The wind turbine workswith two measuring instru-ments to record the windspeed and direction. Thefirst is used for control
while the second monitorsthe first unit. If one of themeasuring instrumentsbreaks down, the other isused for controlling.
What does this mean inpractice? If there is nowind, the turbine remainsat rest (energy-savingmode) and only the controlcomputer works, collectingthe climatic data. The othersystems are only switchedon when required, mea-ning that no electricity isused. The exceptions arethose functions of relevan-ce to safety, such as thebrake system. Once thecut-in wind speed (3 m/s)is reached, the turbinechanges to “operation”mode. Now all the systems
are tested and the nacellealigns itself with the winddirection. The rotor bladesare pitched to the startingposition so that the windcan start the rotor rotating. As the wind gets stronger, the rotor begins to turnfaster. Once the definedsynchronisation speed hasbeen achieved, the genera-tor is connected to the gridand the turbine produceselectricity. During operati-on the nacelle constantlyfollows the wind direction. If the cut-out wind speed(25 m/s) is exceeded, thesystem is stopped by tur-ning the rotor bladesthrough 90° in the direc-tion of the wind. Than therotor slows down.
The operation controlsystem offered can easilybe integrated in the Nordex modular SCADAsystem. On request, all exi-sting wind farm manage-ment systems can also beimplemented. This systemlevel also has the sameuser interface as all otherturbines with a NC2 controlsystems and is ideallysuited for its own modularoverall system.

Your benefit at a glance:
Secure annual yields thanks to the full-service conceptShort reaction time ensured by service network and expert remote monitoringHigh level of staff qualification thanks to company’s own academy
A secure and highlevel of technical availa-bility is the key to everyoperator’s investment ina wind turbine. After all,the machine should pro-duce high yields over auseful life of at least 20years, ensuring a highreturn on capital. Nordexensures this by means ofhigh product and manu-facturing standards (ISO9001). On the other hand,
Nordex offers a compre-hensive range of ser-vices. This multi-stageservice range is dividedinto three packages: Pre-mium, Extended andBasic.
Premium customershave the highest degreeof security that they willbe able to realise thetechnically possible an-nual yield. Only the riskof poor wind conditions
or damage resulting fromforce majeure are notcovered by Nordex. Andif a customer does notwish to be responsiblefor technical operation ofthe turbines, he can as-sign this task to Nordex.Nordex then takes directcharge of operation man-agement and supplies allthe commercially rele-vant data. The Servicedivision looks after the
majority of the wind tur-bines erected by Nordexin the past 20 years: bymeans of remote moni-toring and for local main-tenance work and rapidservice activities using adense global network ofservice stations geogra-phically located to beclose to the wind farmsthey are responsible for.In this way the servicenetwork grows with thenumber of turbinesinstalled and supported. The service staff are con-tinuously trained in thecompany’s own acade-my. EQUIPMENT, OPTIONS AND ACCESSORIES.
The N90/2500 can be ide-ally adapted to the respec-tive location by means ofadditional equipment.
Condition MonitoringNordex offers a condi-
tion monitoring systemfor the N90/2500 in orderto continuously monitorchanges in components. This early-warning sys-tem informs the operatorif a component of the
machine needs to beupgraded in the foresee-able future. This makes inpossible to avoid unsche-duled machine downti-mes and expensive ser-vice work.
Grid access optionsThe N90/2500 is al-
ways supplied as grid-compatible. In otherwords, Nordex makessure that the machine
complies with the localgird-access requirements(e.g. according to the E.ondirective, Version 8/03).
SpinnerThe offshore version
of the N90/2500 is equip-ped with a spinner. Thisprovides the hub with anadditional protectionagainst the weather, which makes service workeasier especially in
“heavy weather”. Thespinner is also availableas an option for onshoremachines.
Service platformNordex also offers a
service platform for off-shore turbines. Thismakes it possible to landservice staff on the nacel-le by helicopter if themachine cannot be rea-ched by boat.
