2014 Highlights
New Fund Established in Honor of Thomas Wysockey In June, The DFI Educational Trust established the Thomas Wysockey Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund, honoring Thomas J. Wysockey, Chairman Emeritus of Thatcher Foundations Inc. The Fund was established with a generous donation and pledge totaling $100,000 from Thatcher Foundations, Inc. A fundraising dinner held in August raised an additional $70,000.
Starting in 2015, Langan Engineering and Environmental Services and the Trust will establish the Langan Engineering and Environmental Services Legacy Scholarship Fund. In anticipation of the establishment of the fund, several principals of the Langan firm made personal contributions in December 2014 totaling $102,000. Rudy Frizzi, a principal at Langan, former DFI president, and current Trust Board member, led this fundraising initiative. Three scholarships, honoring past
Board Establishes Women in Deep Foundations Fund In November, the Trust Board established the Women in Deep Foundations Fund, which will support initiatives and activities designed to increase the participation and retention of women in deep foundations industry careers. Initially, the Fund will provide small grants to assist professionals with the cost of attending DFI conferences and seminars. It is anticipated that in the future, as the Fund grows, other activities, such as scholarships, will also be funded. In consultation with the Trust Board, the recently-formed DFI Women in Deep Foundations Committee will design and implement the program’s activities as well as actively conduct fundraising. The Trust Board would like to thank 2011-2014 Trust Board Chair David Coleman, for his major role in conceiving and championing this important initiative.
Trust’s General Fund Scholarship Awards The Trust’s General Fund At-Large Scholarship program, now in its second year, awarded $10,000 in scholarships to five students in 2014. Over 60 applications were received from students attending 40 different universities across the United States. The program is funded by the Trust’s Sustaining Members Fund which is maintained by general donations from DFI and its members, as well as from other sources.
