In these verses from todays Sedrah, the Torah describes in idencal terms the effect of the most expensive (animal) offering, the less expensive (bird) offering and the least expensive (flour/ mincha) offering. They each provide a sasfying aroma to HaShem’, signifying that He accepts each of them in exactly the same way, notwithstanding the different financial costs involved. From this, the final Mishna of Menachot (13:11) derives an important principle: there is no difference between the one who offers much (marbeh) and the one who offers lile (mamit), so long as they direct their mind to Heaven. The inexpensive mincha offering is described as being offered by a nefesh/soul, since it is usually offered by a poor person who cannot afford anything more expensive – HaShem accepts such an offering as if he had offered up his very soul (Rashi). The Taz (d. 1667) raises the queson: Why should the marbeh and the mam'it receive the same reward? If both do the mitzvah with the proper focus of serving HaShem, should not the person who does more receive a greater reward? In contrast, the Sfas Emes (d. 1905) asks: Why should the one who does more receive the same reward as the person who does less? Both have achieved the same desired result – namely, to focus their aenon on serving HaShem but the one who does less has achieved this result more efficiently! Ulmately, whilst the Mishna effecvely is teaching that the value of ones service cannot be measured in absolute terms but rather that it is relave to ones circumstances, the main emphasis is that there is always an overriding prerequisite to serve HaShem to the best of ones ability and with the sincerest of intent. SEDRAH REFLECTIONS BY JOE BLOOMBERG – VAYIKRA … isheh rei'ach nicho'ach LaShem – ‘… a fire-offering, a satisfying aroma to HaShem’ (Vayikra 1:9; 1:17; 2:2).

In these verses from today’s Sedrah, the Torah describes in identical terms the effect of the most expensive (animal) offering, the less expensive (bird) offering and the least expensive (flour/mincha) offering. They each provide ‘a satisfying aroma to HaShem’, signifying that He accepts each of them in exactly the same way, notwithstanding the different financial costs involved.

From this, the final Mishna of Menachot (13:11) derives an important principle: there is no difference between the one who offers much (marbeh) and the one who offers little (mam’it), so long as they direct their mind to Heaven. The inexpensive mincha offering is described as being offered by a nefesh/soul, since it is usually offered by a poor person who cannot afford anything more expensive – HaShem accepts such an offering as if he had offered up his very soul (Rashi).

The Taz (d. 1667) raises the question: Why should the marbeh and the mam'it receive the same reward? If both do the mitzvah with the proper focus of serving HaShem, should not the person who does more receive a greater reward? In contrast, the Sfas Emes (d. 1905) asks: Why should the one who does more receive the same reward as the person who does less? Both have achieved the same desired result – namely, to focus their attention on serving HaShem – but the one who does less has achieved this result more efficiently!

Ultimately, whilst the Mishna effectively is teaching that the value of one’s service cannot be measured in absolute terms but rather that it is relative to one’s circumstances, the main emphasis is that there is always an overriding prerequisite to serve HaShem to the best of one’s ability and with the sincerest of intent.
