Reflections from Pastor Cathy …

After worship on Sunday, I had a conversation with Bruce Taylor. It was so poignant and powerful that I am still thinking and reflecting upon it. Bruce told me that he had the kids dramatize the Sunday School lesson for the day. It was about the dramatic conversion of Saul of Tarsus, persecutor of early Christians, to become the Apostle Paul in Act 9. During this story, God tells Ananias, a disciple from Damascus to go find Saul and heal him of his blindness. Ananias resists, remembering "how much evil he has done to your saint in Jerusalem" (vs. 13). God somehow convinces Ananias to go: "Go, for he is an instrument whom I have chosen." (vs. 14) Ananias responds as commanded and goes to Saul, lays hands upon him, and Saul's sight is restored. Bruce asked the children this incredibly relevant and poignant question: Who do you think had the most difficulty being converted? Was it Saul or Ananias? Bruce and I continued to talk about how hard it is for any of us to be converted from a previously held stance or belief. And that sometimes it is our very own hearts that need to be converted. Diana Butler Bass (author/historian/speaker) recently posted this comment on her Facebook page: "As a Christian, I have no interest in converting anyone. But I hope that I will continue to be converted." This dovetails with another quote from one of her books: "Christianity was never intended to be a system or a structure of belief in the modern sense; it originated as a disposition of the heart." Marcus Borg would say that Christianity is about the transformation of one’s heart. So I ask the question of myself, and I ask it of you: In what ways do our hearts, our lives, our beliefs need to be converted or transformed to fully live out the Kingdom of God in our midst? There is a poem from an unknown Monk (~1100 AD) that provides insight as well: When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation. When I found I couldn't change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn't change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family. (continued on page 3) Reflections from Pastor Cathy continued ...

Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I

could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world. May we all have the courage to continue to have our hearts converted. Thank you Bruce for such a thought-provoking conversation!

Special Music for Two Sundays in April

Sunday, April 21

Native American Sunday/Earth Day

We will celebrate both our beloved planetary home and the indigenous people of our country with special music for Native American flute, didgeridoo and percussion. This combination celebrates the instrumental practices of two continents – America and Australia – with a fusion of sound that is engaging, transport-ing, and deeply meditative. We will also sing congregational hymns that center on our stewardship of the earth.

Sunday, April 28 —Sacred Cantata

of Johann Sebastian Bach

On this day, the choir will present J. S. Bach’s Cantata No. 100, “What God does, that is done most well,” scored for choir and SATB soloists, accompanied by trumpets, timpani, flute, oboe d’amore, strings, organ and harpsichord. We are privileged to have exceptional soloists for this cantata: Charlotte Hotchkiss, soprano; Diane Radabaugh, alto; Joel Cummings, tenor, and Da-vid Stutz, bass. Many of our youth will also be singing in the cantata, as well as singers from the greater Seattle choral community. The cantatas of J. S. Bach represent some of the finest church music ever written – this is a great opportunity to invite a friend to come and hear this glorious music, too!
