A study guide for the 2020 7th ELA final has been attached. It is due on June 17th and must be fully completed.
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl: Reader Response Journals
• Responses should be a minimum of 6-8 sentences in length (they can always be more). There is only one entry due on June 17th. You may choose to do a Historical Response, Quote Response, or Personal Response.
Historical Response: We will be learning about a lot of history to help us understand the context of Anne’s experience. For this response type, please connect some specific history you have learned in class to a section of the diary. Provide detail about the historical event as well as a clear explanation of the connection you see to the diary, providing the date of the diary entry and the page number in the book.
Quote response: The quote response asks you to choose a specific quote from Anne’s diary to respond to. This response can be personal, historical or make connections to other events or novels. The point here is to keep us noticing excellent quotes in writing.
Personal Response: Anne communicates her personality very powerfully in this book. She has many feelings and experiences that most people can connect with, which is why the book became popular so quickly, and why it has remained popular. For this response type, please provide the date of the entry that you are responding to and discuss your personal connection to the story or characters. Feel free to be candid, as you can request that I not read these sections closely as I grade the response journal.
This one response is worth a Tier 2 Grade, so please put full effort in.

There have been many thematic topics that we have looked at this year in our
novels. Examples include; family, loyalty, trust, pride, racial relationships etc.
Choose one thematic topic that has been shown in three of the novels we have read
this year. Explain what each author is saying about the thematic topic in their
novel. Use specific examples/events to support the theme.
Our Elements of a Five Paragraph Essay
Paragraph One:
• Catchy opening (hook) that makes the reader want to read the essay.
• Background info about the novel that covers: o who o what o when o where
• Thesis—this is where you present the main argument you are trying to prove, and the three subtopics you will be using as proof.
Paragraph Two:
• Topic sentence stating the first subtopic
• Give the specific example
• Explain the specific example and how it connects to the thesis
• transition into the next subtopic (you can do this by saying a little about this subtopic and connect it to the next one)
Paragraph Three:
• Topic sentence stating the second subtopic
• Give the specific example
• Explain the specific example and how it connects to the thesis
• transition into the next subtopic (you can do this by saying a little about this subtopic and connect it to the next one)
Paragraph Four:
• Topic sentence stating the third subtopic
• Give the specific example
• Explain the specific example and how it connects to the thesis
• transition into the next subtopic (you can do this by saying a little about this subtopic and connect it to the next one)
Paragraph Five:
• Concluding paragraph should: o restate the thesis and the three pieces of evidence you used to support it. o briefly restate the evidence and your arguments
o end with a clincher statement that wows the reader, and connects your thinking
in the essay to something beyond the essay to keep the reader thinking!
