The Ishango Bone

Description: A bone from baboon discovered in 1960 by Jean de Heinzelin de Braucourt in Belgian Congo near Lake Edward. Dated back to between 9,000BC-20,000BC. May be it's a tally stick. At the top of the bone there is a piece of quartz. Possibly for writing. There are 3 rows of carved notches. The markings on two of these rows each add to 60. The first row is consistent with a number system based on 10, since the notches are grouped as 20+1, 20-1, 10+1, and 10-1, while the second row contains the prime numbers between 10 and 20! A third seems to show a method for multiplying by 2 that was used in later times by the Egyptians. Additional markings suggest that the bone was also used a lunar phase counter.

It is one of the Mesoamerican calendars, sharing the basic structure of calendars from throughout ancient Mesoamerica. The calendar consisted of a 365 day calendar cycle and a 260 day ritual cycle. The Tomb of Pakal

Description: One of the most important structures in Palenque is the Tomb of Pakal, discovered in 1952 by Alberto Ruz Lhuillier inside the Temple of the Inscriptions. As the crypt is larger than the entrance to the chamber, it is thought that it was built before the pyramid. Pakal's body was placed in the limestone, body-shaped sarcophagus and then it was sealed with a 3.8 by 2.2 meter stone cover. Once the burial rites were completed and the chamber sealed with a layer of stucco, five or six sacrificial victims were laid in the small antechamber. The stairway inside the temple was filled with rubble, jade, pottery and shell offerings. A stone airshaft, called a "psychoduct," was built starting at a notch in the funeral chamber door and rising to the upper floor of the temple. According the late Linda Schele, a renowned researcher, the Maya believed that the shaft allowed a mythological serpent to rise from Pakal's tomb to the place occupied by his descendants.

The hidden base of Borobudur was originally the first level, which contains the gallery of Kamadhatu level. On the last three circular uppermost terraces, 72 stupas circle the huge main stupa on the top of this monument.

The circular form represents the eternity without beginning and without end, a superlative, tranquil, and pure state of the formless world. There are no reliefs on the three circular terraces. All but the largest central stupas on the upper levels originally contained a (more or less) life-size statue of the Buddha (kneeling). Many of these statues are missing or damaged. There are also many alcoves along the lower levels which used to contain similar statues. Again, many of these are missing or damaged. The whole volume of this massive andesite monument reaches the number of 56.000m2 consists of at least 2.000.000 stone blocks.
