have the ability to search or “google” anything from the internet. Therefore, we must help students to understand how to gather information and how to critically evaluate information. In simple words students need to develop their intellect, their ability to reason, understand, and draw conclusions about what is true or real. Concept-based learning shifts students from just memorizing facts and skills to understanding

concepts or “big ideas” in order to build intellect.

This year we are very excited about our ‘Joey’ cart with 15 Apple MacAir! We would like to thank our wonderful PAC for their futuristic thinking and making technology possible for the MYP students. It is really helpful with completing our projects for our upcoming gala.

IB Learner Profile

The a im of a l l IB programmes is to develop internat iona l l y minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. The 10 learner profile attributes are Inquirers, K n o w l e d g e a b l e , T h i n k e r s , C o m m u n i c a t o r s , Pr i n c i p l e d , O p e n-Minded, Caring, Risk- takers, Balanced, and Reflective.

The Lear ner Prof il e Attribute for the month of January was Risk-taking. The IB Learner Profile aims to develop students who are r isk- takers . This means guiding students to explore new ideas and innovative strategies, challenging their ways o f th ink ing and encouraging them to be confident in those decisions. This lifelong skill requires students to step out of their comfort zone and become courageous in their choices and actions. But, there is a hint of uncertainty and failure attached to the idea.

KG Visit !

Grade 7 (MYP 2) students had an amazing day at King George (KG) Secondary last month. They had a guided tour of the school by the KG students. Our students had a glimpse of their lives in KG next year. Please hand in your completed Grade 8 application forms to the office even if you are in zone.

Family Literacy Day

“Literacy flourishes when families read, play and work together," said Anne Cooper, board chair, Decoda Literacy Solutions. Family Literacy Week at Roberts was a huge success. MYP students made posters and read to their buddy classes. It was magical watching them read to their younger peers and helping them learn how to read.

Making the MYP Connection at School

At Roberts, we encourage students to be exposed to ideas and concepts they might have never known about. By encouraging risk-taking at school we develop the i r prob lem so lv ing abilities.Risk-taking can expose a student to different ideas or different cultures in school. Students are not praised for the result but praised for the ef fort behind the action. Teachers often l ink this positive praise with the word ‘courageous’ or ‘risk-taker’.”

Making the MYP Connection at Home

So how can you successfully encourage your child to take risks and be resilient in the face of challenges?

✦ Communicate effectively and listen actively.

✦ Pro v ide re sources and learning opportunities for children to explore their in teres t s , sparks and abilities.

✦ Accept their children for who they are and help them to set realistic goals and expectations.

✦ Help the i r ch i ldren to exper ience success by identifying their strengths and learning from failures.

✦ Recognize a child’s capacity, maturity, common sense, and l ea r n ing and communicate the message that “you have everything you need to succeed”

Science World

On January 24th, we had two wonderful presenters from Science World. It was a morning full of magic created by science. Students were mesmerized by the wonders of science and had many questions for the presenters. Many students inspired by the science and the wonders it can create, are keen on using them for their passion projects.

We can Change the World

Finally, our most awaited Passion project Gala. The buzz word in the level 3 and 4 of A building is Passion Project’. MYP leaders of the future are frantically working on their big project of the year along with all the other core subjects. This project is an individual project and is a huge opportunity for each one of them to show how their passions can contribute to the community! I am very excited about the gala and would like to extend an invitation on behalf of Roberts MYP teachers to the gala on 14th March in our school gym. Please mark the date to come and share our students’ passion!

The Lear ner Prof il e Attribute for the month of February is Principled. Principled learners act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of f a i r ness , j u s t i ce , and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups, and communities. They take responsibility for their own act ions and the consequences that accompany them. Successful learners are active, goal-directed, self-regulating, and assume personal responsibility for contributing to their own learning.

Making the MYP Connection at School

At Roberts, we expose students to s i tuat ions where they are presented with a choice. They are given examples of how they can act in the face of challenges and how does it look like when they act in principled way. How we teach is as important as what we teach. School provides them a secure environment and a routine that bu i lds pos i t i ve , meaningful relationships with caring adults and peers.

Making the MYP Connection at Home

Chi ldren l ea r n to be pr inc ip led watch ing parents and other adults in their daily lives. Remember that children do not learn

the values that make up strong character simply by being told about them. They learn by seeing the peop le a round t h e m   a c t   o n and uphold those values in their daily lives. In our daily lives, we can show our children that we respect others. We can show them our compa ss ion and concern when others are suffering, and our own self-discipline, courage and honesty a s we make difficult decisions. How we conduct our e ver yday activities can show our children that we always try to do our best to serve our families, communities and country.
